  1. Salutations once again, brothers! Firt off, thank you very much for all the kind words on my artwork; it is always my greatest reward to be able to please the hardcore fans of the Dark Millenium with my visions. As I said elsewhere, today is a joyous day of achievement and, at the same time, somewhat bittersweet too. For four years, beginning on April 22, 2008, I've been researching and illustrating the mighty Primarchs, the genetically engineered champions and leaders of mankind's legions of Space Marines and The Emperor himself. I've explored their strengths and weaknesses and depicted their homeworlds and cultures, weapons and physical traits. Today, it ends. Both the client and I always thought it would be fitting to have the Primarch of the XIII Legion be the one to end the series. Why? Because it is him who shaped much of what the Imperium would become in the fabled 41st Millenium. It is his contribution and penning of the Codex Astartes that would give the Space Marines purpose again. The strategist, the warrior, the leader: Roboute Guilliman{/b] of the Ultramarines. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/ULTRA.jpg There is in this image a deceivingly simple nature to his armour. I could've added a lot of bling and embellishment to it, but I preferred to focus on his stern features and his looking ahead into the future. I preferred to convey triumph and honor, rather than decorations for decorations' sake. It is thus, that with simple and straightforward details, this Primarch wears honors that I only illustrated on The Emperor himself: the halo, the double-headed eagle, the sword resembling the blade of the God-Emperor as well as the laurels. Everything makes us think of this man as a complete hero and saviour, creating the full circle back to mankind's first true saviour and guide. It's been wonderful to hear all that you had to say about this project. You've seen me grow within these images and helped me carry on this titanic task. You have even graced me with your statements about preferring my vision to the official. Thank you for your support and here's the living proof that no matter how long it takes me, I always deliver :tu: And, of course, now that this project is ended I'm open to your suggestions on what I could do to follow this up. I'd certainly love to keep working with the Primarchs and I've a few ideas, but what do you brothers think? See you soon! Aerion.-
  2. Brothers, Thank you very much for the warm welcome! I certainly miss posting here a lot. B&C was always the best source of fluff-check for me; hopefully, I'll be able to start posting regularly again and maybe update all of the artwork that I've been churning out pertaining the Dark Millenium that hasn't made it to these hallowed halls. This time around, though and spurred by the client that has so patiently waited four years to see the completion of this project, I bring you yet another of the majestic Primarchs of the Emperor, so we're left with only one more to go. Behold the VIII Legion's leader, the Night haunter himself: Konrad Curze. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/NOCTURNUSOBSSESORIS_v2.jpg As I said on dA, Curze was a true challenge. Being the most obscure Primarch of all, I had to convey that sense of foreboding about him that would haunt the nightmares of the Nostramo settlers, but at the same time, imbuing him with the nobility and majesty of his brothers. I believe I have achieved it, to a degree; I'm never sure until others judge the work! The deep color blue of his artificer armour and his marble-white skin, combined with the blood-soaked lightning claws make for a very horrific image, even though there is technically no gore or graphic bits here. Just the blood. His calm and serene expression, with a frown of pain, adds up to his whole aura of despair at the visions of his doom, represented in the background. At first, I was going to draw the streets of Nostramo for a backdrop, or even some Night Lords ships, but then I thought using M'Shen would do better justice to the unavoidable last fate of the Night Haunter. As usual, you'll be the final judges of this piece, which I hope you enjoy as much as you have the others. Now we're down to one last Brother, but perhaps the most important in what would become the Imperium as we know it in the 41st Millenium. See you all soon, hopefully. Aerion.-
  3. Salutations, brothers! It's certainly been a LONG time since I've posted in this hallowed halls. Unfortunately, things are most likely going to be that way in the near future, BUT, luckily, I have loyal fans that will be able to post up the last three Primarchs in this 4-year long endeavor. I only ask the Holy Moderators to forgive this act of threadomancy, but I think it's better to keep the project within these pages and not just open three separate posts. though I bow to your decision! Thank you all for the support you've all shown me all these years and hopefully the finishing of this project will be as satisfying as all the artwork that has come before. See you all soon! Aerion.-
  4. My fellow brothers... Well, what a coincidence that my post should rise up from the dead just a few days before my posting this newest Primarch. I thank @xa0s for bringing it up, though I also humbly thank the Mods for not making this an Inquisitorial case of melta execution. We're all happy to be alive and praise The Emperor! It's always uplifting to see all the kind words, compliments and critiques that you all have towards my artwork and even the risk of threadomancy many of you run just to ask if there will be some more updates on the project. I greatly appreciate it and always note down all of your suggestions and apply them with my best efforts. I hope it shows! Now, as for the lateness mentioned by brother @xa0s, he's right in his assumptions that having a baby isn't the easiest task in the world. It is only now, two months and a half after his birth, that my schedule and daily life have somewhat returned to normal. It is a life changing experience, fatherhood, and the most exciting and happy times of a man's life. But it is also much work; that is, if you pay your son due attention, like I do. A salute from baby Ben to all of you! He hopes to join the mighty halls of the B&C one day, perhaps even posting his own artwork (which I have no doubt will be much better than my own!). And speaking of the artwork! Here's Corax, mighty Primarch of the Raven Guard Legion: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/CORVUS.jpg As I said elsewhere, I really enjoyed working on this Primarch even though I often overlookd him in the fluff and his legion as a whole. They always struck me as a successor chapter, which was not the case at all. Funny, because I've always loved E.A. Poe, and there's lots of references in this legion's theme from that great horror author; the last words of Corax nonwithstanding: 'Nevermore'. With Corax I tried to think of a darker version of Sanguinius and I was happy to see that my illustrations clearly underline their heritage, but accentuating's each brother's defining characteristics. Corax is much more of a predator, his features hard and crow-like. His wings of hard metal and engineering and his raven's talons made to instill fear into his enemies and a sense of swift death, rather than the amazement and overwhelming feeling that Sanguinius must've projected, being much more radiant and gracious. I think Corax's stance and overall pose within the composition enhance the 'Death from Above!' feeling i wanted to get with this illustration. One other detail I loved painting was the background Forge World of Lycaeus, Corax's homeworld. It seems to me that these industralised, gritty, smoke and fog filled amospheres are what best represent the gothic foundations of the Dark Millenium. But enough patting myself on the back. I hope you enjoy this legend of The early Imperium and let me know yout thoughts/comments/critiques as usual! I'll be reading each one of them! Until very soon! Aerion.- PS.. @xa0s, I'll be replying to your PM shortly.
  5. My valiant brothers... These are coming at more regular intervals than the last I had posted, so I hope that's keeping you happy and still excited to see the completion of this project. I'm almost there and I have mixed feelings as I'm plunging into the final few; on one hand, I feel relieved, because this has been a titanic endeavour that's consumed a lot of my time. But, on the other hand, I'm happy that I've had the opportunity to experiment with a lot of new things, different techniques and angles as well as developing more consistently my skills as a storyteller and designer. To give these steps forward whilst illustrating the Primarchs is truly a blessing. As usual, I'd like to thank you all for the enormous support you've shown me and the Moderators of the boards for tolerating the constant threadomancy brought upon the forum's front page; I hope the artwork is wirth the trouble. I wish I could reply to each and everyone of you, as I used to, but my time is consumed with work and my first baby's coming in a few weeks, so I hope you understand. Know that every bit of insight and critiques is noted and I do sit with expectation in front of my monitor when I open up the B&Cs Hall of Honor forum to see what you've thought of my latest addittions. And speaking of which, after that rather long introduction, here's what I've come to show you today: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/FURIAE.jpg I'm sure you'll recognise this angry fellow right away. Yes, he's Angron, Primarch of the bloody World Eaters. As I said elsewhere, I'm quite proud of how this illustration one turned out, especially considering I did take a lot of liberties with it. There's an official representation of Angron, which I didn't hold too close to my chest when coming up with my own vision. To me, his gladiatorial past was paramount to the character as well as the whole anger stance he should have. On top of that, I also envisioned this Primarch to be like Alpharius: closer to the rank and file soldier than high up above them. Getting dirty is a must for a leader who's watched in horror how all of his battle brothers were slaughtered in his homeworld. There are a few details I'd like to point out and which hold particular interest to me: the gory axe versus the white of his armour are something I love. I thought about the grim fact that white armour would likely be moist with blood all the time, making it more noticeable and terrible to behold; I chose it over the gold of the official. The tattoos are also something I'm fond of. From afar it looks like it's blood, but when you look closely you see they have a pattern. Thus, he looks as if his whole face was drenched in blood. Also, I've featured a stubble on him as well. I didn't reckon he'd be the clean type of Primarch after all. The background is a homage to his gladiatorial roots and the whole design of his artificer armour is also meant to look light and permit a vast ammount of speed when in close combat. I wanted Angron to look like he could outrun you easily, despite being a terrible giant. So, I hope you enjoy this rendition, C&C is always more than welcome and stay tuned for the last illustrations of this project! Aerion.-
  6. Salutations, brothers... First off, I'd like to bump the excitement over the B&C's first publishing effort (that I know of): The Dornian Heresy has finally arrived and it sports a rather blasphemous cover by yours truly, which I hope you'll like. My artwork is certainly the least of all the awesomeness you'll find inside. As a matter of fact, I think my cover sort of lets down the project, but that's just me, I hope... Have a read and let me Mods know you want more! Second, I want to thank you for your immense support on this project and the fact that you, by choosing my artwork as something worth of the 41st Millenium, have given me many chances to work with great As for the topic at hand, I return to the Dark Millenium with the latest Primarch in the Libris Primaris series: Alpharius Omegon, of the Alpha Legion. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/DECEPTOR.jpg This is one Primarch I was really looking forward to depicting. Mostly because I knew there was going to be a lot of symbolism to him, given the secretive and deceitful nature of the Legion. As I had foreseen, I did incorporate many elements that make this one one of my favourites. The most obvious is, of course, the presence of the twin Omegon in the background. Or is he Alpharius? No one will know for sure, right...? That's key to the Alpha Legion, their unknown plans and schemes, which I tried to accentuate by making this Traitor Primarch face left as a loyalist, but looking right, as my Traitors. Omegon is promptly doing the inverse, so you have a certain ambiuguous feeling about the nature of the character. They don't have an established homeworld, so I incorporated the many faces effect on the background, emphasising the Hydra quality of the Legion as well as Alpharius' likeness to that of a regular Marine from his ranks. Something also present in the relatively simple design of his armour, less pompous than his brothers'. Of course, the armour still looks as ornate as a Captain's would in the Pre-Heresy times. The Hydra is a repetitive motif all around, though it doesn't detract from the Pre-Heresy symbol of the Legion predominantly featured as well. So, overall, I'm very satisfied and happy with this one and I hope I've once again done justice to the character. You'll be the judges, as usual! Thank you for your time and read you soon! Aerion.-
  7. Thank you very much for all the positive comments, brothers! It's always a pleasure to read you all. You also have pointed out some interesting issues regarding the perspective of the hammer on Vulkan's hands, all of which I've noted for further reference. Perspective is always the hardest part of illustrating and sometimes I don't get the angles I want right. Working traditionally, of course, only leaves me with the option of improving next time; which I'll do my best to. The upcoming Primarchs-- ops! Did I say PrimarchS? I must've got that wrong. Or have I...? :P Until very soon! Aerion.-
  8. Salutations, brothers! It's been a LONG while since I updated this thread and you've all been quite patient with it (as well as Impetro Respondi's enforcers, our beloved Mods, for letting it resurrect every now and then!), so here is my latest piece to add to the Book of Primarchs: Vulkan, Primarch of the Salamanders! http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/IGNEUS.jpg This is an image that has been so slow in the making that I'm somewhat dubious as to its quality. I know it has a lot of merit, according to my standards, especially considering certain things I've had to settle artistically that the communities and fans alike haven't yet! The skin, particularly, has been a challenge. The Sallies, historically, have been the only african rooted Chapter of The Imperium (as far as I know); however, that was somewhat disputed with the latest Rulebook stating that they have jet black skin only, which may mean that they're only mutated caucasians. Personally, I think they're both: they have african features, but are very dark skinned due to their homeworld's pigmentation. I've also tried to tap into his blacksmith origins adding a certain 'working' look to his gauntlets, which also sport the flames typical of the Promethean Cult. So, I'll let you decide whether or not this is worth the wait as well as up to standard with the other renditions I've done so far. Thanks again for all the comments, critiques, thoughts and ideas. I read them all and take them to heart when rendering this illustrations! Aerion.-
  9. Well, my brothers, lots of comments and lots of really useful tips and critiques! I'm glad that my artwork is something you can savour even when its got room to improve and that despite its flaws, you can still enjoy it. The size of Horus and The Emperor, as well as the Marines is indeed something very questionable. But, then again, so is the third eye idea I implemented on Magnus, instead of his proverbial 'one eye' or the mutated one. I think you can always expect a twist from me, though I'll acknowledge it isn't always as true to the canon as it should be. I also recognise the flwas in the character design of the Custodes, but I tried to stay true to Blanche's interpretation. I really like the man's job and to me, his are the definitive depictions of Warhammer 40,000 (whether we like it or not) and as such I tend to agree with the man when it comes to Pre-Heresy times. His version doesn't have the bolter on the spear, and the lenses are missing from the helmet, which is something deliberate I believe, to make them look more menacing. The gold is indeed trickt in this one and I still have a lot to learn in terms of applying light naturally so the characters won't merge together and become unrecognisable... I'll bear it in mind for upcoming imagery. There's also the matter of the faces and other details: as for the serious countenances on everyone, the client requested a 'just before planetfall' scene, so I made everyone wear their battle armour as well as having them stern and determined, facing the imminent descent into the newly discovered world. That on the far left is indeed another Luna Wolf, which I added to create a sense of depth and make the viewer feel as if he was in the middle of the battle room. I'm always really happy and challenged when I see your posts and I thank you for all the kind compliments with which you grace my work. I'll go toil away on the next primarch and see you all when it's here. Cheers. Aerion.-
  10. Salutations, brothers! Well, that didn't take long, did it? :P I'm back in this post, not to update a new Primarch, but instead to finish what i started a couple of posts ago, when I showed you the pencils for this image you're about to see in its full-colour form: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/TheMasterplan.jpg As I said elsewhere, I personally loved working on this piece because it threw at me a challenge that I felt was very exciting: to show The Emperor and Horus, The Warmaster, working side by side in the early days of the glory of the Impeium, while the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet was still a loyalist defender -and enforcer!- of the Imperial Truth. There's lots of details to take in here: there's well-known characters the client requested to have (Cpt. Loken from "Horus Rising" and a previous illustration you'll surely remember from me) as well as a composition and atmosphere that create a very interesting and yet unseen aspect of these legendary warriors. I think after seeing so many imagery of father and son fighting their last battle against one another, it's definitely original for me to tackle the first piece of artwork depicting their actual involvement in helping mankind out of the darkness together. I particularly enjoy one thing above all: I like the way Horus is taking the lead in this operation and The Emperor is sort of agreeing with him, on a more soldier-like role, which I think emphasises the fact that he didn't want to be seen as a deity and had no problem stepping aside and confidently take in his Son's advice. As for something that's already been quite noticed, I'll just give the explanation here so you know why I did what I did with the sizes on these characters. They're actually tweaked by myself to further enhance the individuals and their parts in the composition. To me, The Emperor was huge and by that I mean THIS huge as you see here. Astartes were man-sized compared to him and the Primarchs all varied, with Horus and perhaps Magnus being a tad taller. It just didn't ring 'almighty deity' to me that The Emperor was the same size as everyone else or even his Sons and that's why I made this particular choice. Of course, it's an artistic liberty and you don't have to agree, but I just wanted to let you know it had an explanation. So, I hope you enjoy this piece, not exactly a Primarch, but something very related to it! Let me know what you thought! Aerion.-
  11. Indeed! I'm quite busy these days and I actually have stopped by the B&C to attend other affairs, aside from this thread. I was hapy to see it still active, though and to learn that you are even concerned about my welfare! But, just to keep the illustrious Impetro's melta-gun quiet, I would encourage everyone to take @cathar's advice and wait just a lil' bit longer for a real update around here. Threadomancy is a big no-no as it incites ranting and that's not what we're all here for. And since this thread is in 'suspended animation' rather than dead, I'd like for all of us to keep it that way. I know it's been more than long enough since the mighty Khan was posted but rest assured that the missing Primarchs are being worked on (something its owner is keen on reminding me!). In the meantime, I'm quite full of commissions, projects and real life issues to post as often as I'd like, BUT, since many of you (faithful and loyal watchers!) will jump in excitement (?) seeing a post made by me here, I wouldn't want to dissaponit you with just words. Here's a sneak peek at a commission I was requested to work on recently, which deals with something we don't get to see too often in Heresy Era illustrations. It isn't exactly 'Libris Primaris' material, but it is VERY relatd to it: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/Sketches/TheMasterplan-FinalPencils.jpg Yes, that's right! It's the Warmaster and The Emperor himself, working side by side when the light of the Imperium stil shone brightly and the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet was the pide of all mankind. Here we also see a very familiar face: Cpt. Loken from Horus' Mournival. I thought this was a great idea to tackle, since we've always seen the final struggle between father and prodigal son, but not much of their interaction when Chaos was still a whisper in the Warp... So, thanks again for the great support and patience and I hope this will help quench your thirst for a while, whilst I work on Vulk-- + TRANSMISSION ENDED + Aerion.-
  12. Thank you all for the compliments, brothers! I'm sorry I did not reply earlier, but I've had certain real life issues that needed desperate solving. I'm happy everyone seems to have liked this Primarch! Jaghatai was certainly a challenge, because while there is an image of him, it's not necessaily the image one could conjure up in one's mind when reading the White Scars fluff. I believe I've brought more oriental flavour to him and I honestly tried to do my best to homage the roots of this eastern-based warrior. I'm excited to know that the small details I've added hinting to various passages of the fluff and White Scars's tactics and overall structure as a Legion have been discovered and thought of as fitting (i.e The horse decorated wristbands, the samurai looking armour, the katana). There are a few heads-up that I must acknowledge, such as the fact that his left shoulderpad (the one facing us) looks a bit odd. That's partly my afault for not checking and double-checking the perspective and angles as much as I should and partly because of space; these images I render in a much wider canvas than I usually work with and thus it's difficult sometimes to measure well the space and what will be in it and what will stay out. Another interesting point was regarding my use of camera angles when using a worm's view on Khan and a bird's view on his palace and Chogoria. That created a bit of a strange effect as well, and I will certainly not let that pass again. I'm also glad everyone still thinks my style is somewhat fitting of the Dark Millenium. I'm still surprised as to how much it has evolved with time. There are still quite a few Primarchs left to depict, so I will be getting to that as soon as I can and you will see updates firt of all! Chers again and see you all soon! Aerion.-
  13. Salutations once again, brothers! It's been some time as usual and I thank those who are watching this thread intently for the patience (as well as the Mods of the board for allowing threadomancy to occur so periodically :teehee:). I'm bringing here the latest update to this project and one you'll hopefully like! This Primarch has been asked for several times and many have been awaiting my take on him, so here he is, finally: Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/KHAN.jpg As usual, I'm quite proud of how this one turned out and I think it's a worthy successor of Mortarion and an "up to standard" companion to all his brothers. However, I do feel he stands out a bit more, because of his ethnic backround. The White Scars Legion is the only oriental themed Legion in the GW gothic universe and it was a great challenge and a pleasure to instill into the Mighty Khan that Chinese/Japanese/Mongol flavour, without sticking to any in particular and rather enhancing his archetypal nature as the perfect Eastern Warrior. Also, and something else worthy of notice is the background of this piece. The White Scars were renowned for their skill and excellence in the field of fast attack; their motorbike assaults were (and still are in the 41st Millenium) unrivalled and that stems from the fact that in their homeworld of Mundus Planus, the Khan won all of his battles and unified the planet with the force of his cavalry (a homage to Genghis Kahn, obviously) and his lightning strike tactics. This was achieved mainly because Chogoria was a rich planet, very fertile and filled with green plains, tall mountains and blue seas. Thus, upon reading that description of a homeworld, it struck me as one of the very few not to have such a gothic and decayed atmosphere as the others. Something interesting to depict! I hope you enjoy it, as usual, and let me know what you think! Aerion.-
  14. Hello all, my brothers... I'm sorry I've not been able to reply sooner to all of your praise, and critiques, but I've been swamped with work and it has taken a toll on my time in front of the monitor to answer kindly to those that give a little time of their daily duties to look at my artwork. "Thank you" I guess doesn't cut it anymore, but that's what I'll keep saying everytime I see such encouraging posts after each of my Primarchs is uploaded onto the B&C. I hope to bring more awesome artwork to the boards to compensate my lack of posts. I'm glad you all thought I did Mortarion justice. As I said, he was a quite daunting character to take upon (pun intended), along with Russ and The Emperor himself, I think. There's definitely a very defined image for him and to be able to give it a new twist whilst still keeping true to it has taken its toll on some details. I agree that the skull shoulderpad seems a bit warped, but that's due to the many, many teeth I added to it. An anatomical mistake, but those tend to happen when you're focusing on so many other things... there's also a bit of a problem with the scythe, as it appears bent to opposite sides if you see the shaft and the blade. That one was due to the blade not having volume (being a power-blade) and a lack of space wchih led to the shaft and blade sort of compressed. All, in all, I think the good parts are worth the bad, and I'm glad you could see that overall it's still up to standard with the rest of my production in this project. Finally, to add something new to this post as a token of my appreciation and an apology for not replying in so long a time, here's an image I did (one of my fabled MiniMasterpieces) of someone many of you asked me if I would be portraying in his Pre-Heresy glory: Warmaster Horus http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/WarmasterHorus.jpg As I said elsewhere, ever since I illustrated Horus for this "Libris Primaris" project, I've been asked if I was going to do a piece of him Pre-Heresy. Thus, here he is; the Warmaster in all his Great Crusade glory. Back when the Imperium looked up at him in awe and wonder. I'm quite proud of how it turned out and I didn't alter the design of his Post-Heresy armour much, because I wanted the contrast to show as much as possible, between the corrupted version and the Pre-Heresy version. There are small details I think also add to the whole, such as the pupils in his eyes, which are very clear. I've done all of my Primarchs's eyes fully white, to enhance their godly features; but I wanted Horus to feel closer to us. That's why I made his pupils noticeable when you pay attention, but if you see him from afar, the eyes are indeed resplandescent. Regarding the armour: I've only read "Horus Rising" out of all the HH novels, and in there it states that his armour was gleaming white with the Eye of Terra upon its chest. So that's (as far as it goes nowadays) canon. The Terminator armour is debatable... on one hand, I do try and make the Primarchs's armour as original as I can, and some of them don't bear much resemblances with any Mk. of armour seen in the 41st Millenium. But Horus himself had always a very defined image (such as Sanguinius) and it was mainly due to Adrian Smith, so I tried to keep in tune with that. I thought that making him look too different from his fallen self would make it harder to appreciate the irony and tragedy of his decay, thus I kept the Terminator armour. So, I hope to hear from you all on this small but significant piece and get ready for the Khan! :) 'til soon. Aerion.-
  15. Salutations once more, brothers... First off, and as usual with my replying after so many kind words and compliments on your part, I'd like to THANK YOU enormously for always bringing up this thread and encouraging me to go on. I'm always amazed to come by the B&C to check threads and topics and find that every couple of weeks, this gallery of mine has been put in the front page again! I'm happy that there are still fans that haven't seen these and are liking them as well as people who saw them are liking them even more or finding new details on them. I can't, unfortunately, get to all of the replies personally as I'd like, but I do want you to know I read each and every one of them and I'm quite aware of the critiques and suggestions you propose regarding who's coming next and what you thought of each new one posted. Now, as I said elsewhere, this one took a lot of work. As I told my client, Mortarion was always a bit troublesome for me. For reasons I've yet to discover, the brave leader of the Death Guard Legion seemed to be as ominous as his whole background and the passion the fans always had for him, making him as daunting as Russ, or The Emperor. Perhaps it was combining both the decadence and rust of his armour as well as the nobility and stature he had during the Great Crusade times, or making his deathly, ghastly looks honourable still so that you'd be both afraid and awestruck; but, whatever it was, it paralised my pencil more than enough times... And then there was the fact that Adrian Smith (one of my faourite Dark Millenium illustrators) had done such a good job of rendering Mortarion that I felt compelled to copy his design, but felt I was cheating if I did. After all of the above fears were overcome, I came to this illustration you see here which has satisfied me greatly. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/MORTIS.jpg I think there are more original elements here to call this my own as with all of my other Primarchs, but I still kept some of the established looks for him so that he was recognisable as a character. The overall composition I think has a lot of strength and oozes a dark, brooding mood, which I think fits the Death Guard perfectly. The detail of the sunken eyes and the masked visage of Mortarion also make for a very mysterious atmosphere, coupled with my trying to keep the armour as ghastly as I could. You will notice I've left most of the top part of it in the traditional white colours of the Legion, whilst keeping mostly dark tones in the lower torso, thus enhancing the Death aspect and skeletal reminiscence of the figure (also enhanced by the power cables acting as a ribcage). The scythe is another detail I'm quite proud of, as it came out looking both dangerous and noble and you'll notice it's the only bit that has no rust in it, as if the Primarch took care of its cleansing each time he carried it into battle. Finally, the look of Barbarus is also something I relished in very much. I did a lot of designs of Mortarion's homeworld as well as its inhabitants (both human and local) way back when and was happy to put them to use here. I hope all of you Death Guard fans like this rendition of your beloved Primarch and let me know what you think, as usual! Until very soon! Aerion.-
