Unless you just want them to be bigger, the "problem" with Orks is they are all squatting and their necks stick straight out from their chests. The Nobz and Stormboyz have slightly better posture in the bodies though. I fixed the regular Boyz by rotating the hips and sculpting them upward necks so the heads sat higher. They still have the typical bad Ork posture, just without constantly being in a state of air bench. The middle Ork is on a Nob body with a raised head. The other Ork is a Stormboy, but he is standing on a piece of debris so his height is misleading. The Marine on the right was true scaled, and roughly the height of a modern Primaris.

As somebody who has quit wargaming at least twice, it's always good to take breaks if it doesn't entertain you anymore. I spent most of my 20s and early 30s with the Warhammer stuff boxed away, then randomly got the urge to come back. Then I shelved it again for a few years when I lost interest in 40K, and when I came back again, I work mostly on Historicals skirmish games, board games, and the 40K Boxed Games I have (Space Hulk, Blackstone Fortress, DW:O, etc). Stuff that tickles my modeling and painting fancy. But, if this really is your last project, hopefully it's a good one.

So, at long last, I'm back to Warhammer 40K models. Or, at least, Games Workshop models. About a year or so ago, I bought a copy of Blackstone Fortress and its Escalation expansion without the models, for about $25 each. I'd started this project, but set it aside a couple times to work on other stuff. Fifty-plus custom models are a lot to do, and I had several Historicals projects, Rangers of Shadowdeep, and the new Aliens Another Glorious Day in the Corps board game. So, let me present to you the first completed members of my proxy crew of Explorers, led by the archaeotech-obsessed rogue Imperial Guard colonel Janus Drake, his Kroot bodyguard, the combat construct UR-209, a pair of crafty Squat troopers, the Stormtrooper sergeant Taddeus with his gun-servitor, and the insane Specialist Vorne.

What might the future hold for Space Hulk?
Veteran Sergeant replied to Brother Tyler's topic in + OTHER GAMES +
The Space Marines are completely abstracted in Space Hulk. It doesn't matter what they are. I play Space Hulk with regular Marines in power armor because I like them better. With Space Hulk's level of abstraction, there's no functional difference between a bolter and a storm bolter. A flamer or a heavy flamer. Assault cannon or heavy bolter. No difference between power armor and terminator armor. Most of the Marines die horribly in close combat 9 times out of 10 regardless, lol. They miss most of the time at range, only succeeding through follow on fire. The next iteration of Space Hulk could have Primaris, and the game would play the exact same. Just give one model breaching charges instead of a chain fist, for example. I mean, I hope they keep the same old format. Primaris are lame and the Terminators are iconic. But nothing has to change about the game. If the armor made a difference, sure. But it doesn't. If the weapons made a difference, sure. But they don't. One Space Marine is really shooty. One is really burny. One cuts through doors really well. Etc. These are all completely abstracted, with game rules specific to Space Hulk. My chainfist is a Marine with a Lascutter strapped across his back, lol. -

He's for Blackstone Fortress, as a proxy for the robot. I guess technically he's a legal Space Marine Dreadnought proxy too, lol.

Took forever to get most of the paint off, but here is UR 209, ready to stomp into Blackstone Fortress. It was fun to finally have a use for this model again.

So the mad Colonel Drake's retinue is coming along. Sergeant Taddeus Trooper Vorne, admittedly the easiest and least ambitious of the proxies Navigator Locarno (still very WIP, obviously) Drake's personal bodyguard, the Kroot Hunter Grehk Troopers Rein and Raus Imperial Robot UR-205 needed another bath. And finally, the mad Colonel himself. I liked that shorty bolter carbine so much, I made another one. But split in half and filed down to be more human sized with the smaller bolt pistol barrel. I had started on Amalynn Shadowguide using an old metal Eldar ranger I had, but didn't think it was dynamic enough, so she's getting redone.

Yeah, I was thinking about what crozius I wanted to use,but then I thought, "Wouldn't it look cooler as an axe?" And turns out, everything looks cooler as an axe. It's just an early version. I've got to clean it up, but I made it by clipping the wings off of the piece from the Rhino kit and gluing them back to back. The Chaplain Cassius version from Deathwatch Overkill just as a master crafted bolt pistol. I don't play 40K, nor will I probably ever again at this rate. If I did, he'd just be a regular chaplain. I'm duplicating all the playing pieces for the board games right now. I bought the boards/cards/rules etc for Deathwatch Overkill and Blackstone Fortress for cheap on EBay without the models. This is the Cassius I'm proxying.

Been working on some Genestealer Cultists to stand in for the Traitor Guard in Blackstone Fortress (going to replace everything in BSF with Genestealers). But then I said to myself "I really need to do that Chaplain Cassius proxy I've been thinking about for like a year." So this happened.

What's this? First new 40K model in 2 years? I don't usually post early versions of models, but here's my Garran Branatar proxy for Deathwatch Overkill. Moved the head up and the arms down to make the suit wearable by a human shaped person. He's just held together by tac putty right now and the green stuff is just in its initial structural form on the collar and waistline. Base model is an AoBR terminator I've had sitting around for years. Not totally sure where the heavy flamer is from. Sentinel kit maybe? Melta is an inferno pistol from the Sanguinary Guard.

Nobody ever has. At least the current Primaris bolters finally have charging handle and ejection ports that almost make sense and are in a reasonable line with the chamber/barrel/top of the magazine.

So, I've been out of action for a while. Kinda burned out on 40K in 8th Edition after they tossed the canon in the trash and resurrected Guilliman and introduced Primaris (because how else do you keep selling more Space Marines?), etc. Went back to my first love for a little while, historicals. I created a unit of 28mm Perry Wars of the Roses for and wrote a historical article on John, 9th Baron Clifford. A rather fascinating man, if you fancy a little light history about blood feuds, revenge and murder. But what brought me back? Funny enough, the decision to start selling off the hundreds of dollars in miniatures I had sitting around that I was probably never going to get around to. I still don't like 40K, but I do enjoy all the "small games" like Space Hulk, Necromunda, Deathwatch: Overkill, etc. So I bought the components for Blackstone Fortress on the cheap on EBay (helped to have a $5 coupon for Ebay too), and I'm going to dive into the collection to fill out the ranks. I actually love the miniature from Blackstone Fortress, but I just don't need them. So here's a sneak preview of the donor figures I've decided on for proxies. I still need to dig through the collection and find my old Ministorum Priest. I have Eldar rangers, but I kinda like the idea of substituting a Sniper Scout for that model. I'll give him a sword on his back or something. And yeah, that old Rogue Trader dreadnought fits on a 32mm base. Mostly. Sorta. it, I'ma do it anyway.

What a great project. After a couple years away from the 40K hobby, what an inspiring place to come back to. But your stuff has always been great. This reminds me of the broad scope project I was working on when I just burned out back in in 2017.- 599 replies

Not exactly a bad thing. The Horus Heresy had become the Anti-Song of Ice and Fire. Instead of George R. R. Martin not finishing the novels people wanted to read to get to the end of a prescribed story arc everybody wanted to see happen, the Black Library just churned out at lest a couple dozen novels not worth reading to stretch out the prescribed story arc people just wanted to read the end of, lol.
