Codex: Heretic Militarum - Blood Pact
BrotherLoki replied to BrotherLoki's topic in + HOMEGROWN RULES +
Thanks for the feedback. I specifically left out the units that you mentioned as they were associated with the Sons of Sek on Gereon, rather than with the Blood Pact per se. Same with excubitors - the rear-echelon occupation troopers armed with las-locks. Having said that there's a good argument that the Blood Pact would include similar units as well, as at that time in their development Sek was apparently serving Gaur while he built the Sons in secret, so I guess alll the Gereon forces were nominally members of the Blood Pact. I may add them in to the next version, and possibly re-work it to cover the Sons of Sek more generally, Anarch and all. -
I'm a huge fan of Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts novels, and in particular their signature enemy the Blood Pact. I've been wanting to do a Blood Pact army for years, and over time I've planned any number of conversions and projects, but lack of money and general hobby butterfly syndrome have got in the way. I've planned lists using the Imperial Guard codex, and the Forgeworld Renegades and Heretics but never been entirely satisfied, so I decided to write my own Blood Pact Codex. This is a 54 page document providing all the datasheets and additional rules you would expect to find in a codex from GW, such as warlord traits, stratagems, artifacts and even a new blood-powered psychic discipline - Haematurgy. Many units and rules are adapted from existing GW rules, with some of my own designs based on descriptions from Abnett's books. I have not yet done any playtesting, but I would welcome any comments and criticisms, especially feedback on points values etc. Cheers Pete http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/files/file/641-codex-blood-pact-8th-edition-v1pdf/

The Scythes of the Emperor : A Factual History

By all means, use the name - I've borrowed enough of your fluff, I owe you some back! I figured Iago sounded like a suitably classical heroic name. In tournaments I just use him as a codex captain (so I can use the command squad) with relic blade. I wanted to come up with some chapter tactics for friendly games though, but keep the advantages very focused on fighting tyranids. The idea of the command squad but no honour guard thing came simply because the first models I converted for the army were my command squad, under the 4th ed Dex, and if I wanted Thrasius to have a command squad under the new one, he couldn't be a normal chapter master, since they have honour guard instead. I felt that there was unlikely to be a stack of artificer armour and shiny kit lying around after they lost their homeworld. The prevalence of hellfire shells is because they were introduced to deal with tyranids in 2nd ed, and I figure whats left of the Scythes has close ties to the Ordo Xenos, so will have access to equipment like that. For the same reason I use a Sternguard squad to represent an attached Deathwatch kill-team. -

I could see using the wolves codex Iron Man, but personally I very much wanted to build a scout heavy army, and I reasoned that they wouldn't have enough power armour to go around. I think C:SM is probably a better representation in the long run. I did consider having counterattack as part of the chapter tactics given by my characters though, since its very much a 'hold the line against desparate odds' ability, and a great anti tyranid tool. It seemed too close to the wolves though. Maybe just for veterans, terminators, dreadnoughts and independent characters? -

They're just my homebrew ones, which I created along the lines of the ones in the back of the marine codex. I wanted to be able to represent the Scythes preoccupation with the Tyranid threat. The only ones left are the Tyrannic war veterans, and the new reruits they are training. I just thought about the kind of characters that would create. A bit of shameless stealing from Andrew and Sebastian (sorry guys) gave me Thrasius as a reluctant chapter master and the idea of a Librarian who's trying to turn the hive mind against itself. The ripper familiar seemed like comedy gold at the time, though my flatmate maintains that the ripper's controlling Lucien not the other way around. The idea of the 'big game hunter' scout sergeant kind of created itself, but was inspired by Telion. I basically thought about fluffy rules, then made a guess at how to point cost them, based on other characters in the codex etc. Generally I've erred on the side of caution and guessed high, although bearing in mind how situational some of their abilities are (especially Lucien and Trajan) I suspect they may be slightly underpointed when facing Tyranids, but overpointed when facing anybody else. If you mean physically how did I create them, I just did it in a word processor (OpenOffice in my case), and then converted them to PDF. OpenOffice has this feature built in, or there's a neat bit of software called CutePDF which acts as a virtual printer, so you can print to PDF from any application. The idea of Thorcyra giving Thrasius the chapter relic at the Giant's Coffin may have come from FalcesImperatoris, I don't recall. The bit about it being used to execute traitor marines was made up by me. I wanted to justify the existance of a giant power scythe. A scythe is an absolutely stupid weapon - it's slow and unwieldy, and as much a danger to the user and his allies as the enemy. I figured it's traditionally associated with 2 things - agriculture and death. Agriculture seemed llike a non-starter, so death it was. I could see a scythe being used to execute kneeling prisoners, so I decided it had done just that during the Scouring. I figure that the Scythes are probably an Ultramarines successor, being out on the galactic East, and that when they invest new chapters they probably provide them with some sort of relic to tie them to their parent chapter and upon which to build their own traditions. -

I like the idea of the crossed scythes denoting veteran status. That's what I've used in my army for my command squad veterans. Edit rather than double post: I don't wish to hijack the thread but it occurred to me that some other Scythes fans might be interested in the special characters I designed for the chapter, along the lines of the ones in the 5th ed marine codex. I've posted them up to my blog. Anybody's welcome to try them out in their own games, and I'd welcome feedback. http://littlewars.co.uk/2009/10/the-2nd-ty...man-i-am-today/ Pete -

I'm really looking forward to seeing this. Your work on http://www.the-scythes.com/ was the main inspiration for my own Scythes army: http://s290.photobucket.com/albums/ll254/p...0the%20Emperor/ Glad to see you've come back to the Imperial fold after your dalliances with the filthy Tau. :D -
I think Abnett does a great job of characterising the Astartes - on the one hand, they are supermen who know no fear, but on the other, their pride and supreme self confidence tends to get them into all kinds of trouble. This holds true for both Brothers of the Snake and his Horus Heresy work. Anyway, what would people suggest for traits for the Iron Snakes? I would think Purity Above All is a must (apothecaries in each squad) and potentially Trust your Battle Brothers, as the latter wwould allow you to field units with bolters and sea lances, and would represent the defensive phalanx pretty well (counterattack). As to disadvantages, if just going with the one advantage, I'd suggest Faithful Unto Death, as the tactical squads really seem to be the backbone of the chapter. If going for two advantages I'd probably lean towards either Eye to Eye, or Aspire to Glory. I'm not sure which though. Any ideas?
