I haven't played in ages, but doesn't Kill Team have free wargear swaps wherever it comes up? I recall that being the case for the vet guardsman Krieg team. I honestly thought AoS also didn't have wargear costs, so it's interesting to hear that it does.

I agree, except if you're Salamanders, then Adrax is an equally valid choice to the Judiciar. I like a Lieutenant on this unit for the look, but it's totally optional.

Not quite. They all seem to occur within a phase, it just might not be your own ;) Entirely valid reasons! I've been loving my Hellblasters for a long time, so I may have been affected by bias when I suggested them haha

Thrice as many shots as the Lancer, weapons with better incentives to get close for the detachment bonus, can gain benefits from Vulkan because it runs melta (admittedly not terribly relevant for this list), and you get base wound rerolls from the turret weapon. I'd say they're probably pretty decent in comparison for Firestorm. You want to stay put and shoot from range, you probably don't take Firestorm anyway.

I think I have to disagree here because high Str isn't as king when you're rerolling all your wound rolls. Don't discount that!

The only limitation is that you can't disembark and embark in the same phase, but otherwise away you go, so it does seem like you could make it work. I'm wondering if it would be better to use Hellblasters instead, largely because they seem more offensively capable compared to Sternguard these days. If your opponent does find a way to harm them, they'll also have a chance to fire again. I used them in GTF this way to really punk the Oaths target before the nerf, but with +1 Str if in the right position, and +1 Wound if they target the same thing your Thunderstrike hits, then I think it'll be pretty solid even without old Oaths. Ran them with a Lt. for the Lethal Hits as well.

Vanguard Veterans have a fun application in a Firestorm detachment. Enter: full 10 man brick with a Jump Pack Captain unit, where all 11 models can have a hand flamer. Normally the hand flamer's S3 will hold it back, but thanks to the detachment rule it does up to S4. It can also be fired after advancing also thanks to the detachment rule, and crucially the Captain can make a battle tactic free. I'm thinking specifically Immolation Protocols. I've yet to test it, but my hunch is that if you want to play to Immolation Protocols as a strategy you can't get much better than this. Drop them in where they can all fire at someone Vulkan Hestan can see, and use Immolation Protocols for free to throw 11d6 flamer shots at the target, rerolling wounds thanks to Vulkan, where every crit becomes a devastating wound. You will severely harm and/or kill some surprisingly tough things with this, even before charging.
