AGPO's Angels Sanguine 2nd Company

AGPO

Well I've been working on some other minis, but I've also got a decent draft of my initial 1,500pts army list. It's based largely around the stuff I own, but most of it is still being assembled so any advice would be appreciated. I'm not a tournament gamer or massively into meta but I don't particularly want my arse handed to me either.

Hi AGPO,

How do you see your Terminators keeping up with the rest of your fast army? You have the Rhinos that can move 18", the Assault squad and DC that can both move 12", then the Terminator's that will be pottering along at 6".

Hey sp4rky thanks for the response. I'm intending to play the termies differently depending on whether I'm playing a combat or a shooting focussed army. On the attack they can deepstrike, with their armour and FNP keeping them safe from the first turn's shooting. On the defensive (say against 'Nids) they'll guard my scoring units and launch counter-attacks. They've got a 24" range on their storm bolters, plus the assault cannon, so I'm not too worried about them being left out of the action.

Hey AG

Just curious about how you paln to run/synergize your list. Plan on combat squading your tacs? I ask because i'm still on the fence about "short range" heavy weapon (m-melta) in fast vehicles. Seems to me a waste (mis-use?) of points, your heavy not being able to fire if you plan on taking advantage of our speed. As per the DC, are you planning on screening them with the rhinos to keep them from running off, or DSing them? Having a Chappie for an HQ is nice, but in this case it ins't really doing much for you. 4 DC with chainswords isnt exactly uber choppy. A librarian with a jp, and unleash rage/something else may be a better option. How are you going to run that solo JP unit? The rest of your army seems pretty shooty, with only 1 (2 with the DC) close combat unit.. Just curious

Hey Crimson,

Well to be completely honest I haven't made that many plans as I've played precisely two games of 40K since Eye of Terror. My thinking was to rhino bunker the tactical squads near objectives. I'd then either go for a massed deep strike of the Termies, RAS and DC, or else hold the termies back in reserve laying down fire whilst I screened the DC with the rhinos and using the RAS to deal with any armoured/shooty threats sitting back.

When I expand to 2,000pts I'm subbing out the chappie for a librarian and using the model to represent Lemartes, I also want to add a storm raven, vindicator and maybe another assault squad or melta honour guard.

Wow, I've really neglected this thread. I'm stuck at uni atm without a camera, so getting pics of my latest work up is an issue.

Anyway, progress report, I've got another three tactical marines done including a meltagun and multi-melta, and four terminators in the finishing off phase. The assault marines are done, but their compatriots are currently taking a bath in some dettol. After this I've got three kits on order - a box of death company, sanguinary guard and some dark angels veterans. Along with the other stuff I've got waiting to be stripped and painted that'll give me the parts to make a 1,500pt army.

I've also decided to start adding some marines from other successor chapters to the army. Once my bits arrive I'll be adding a character from each chapter so I can see where I want to take the army. After that I'm going to be adding my first successor squad. I know eventually I want to build this force to encompass all the named successors, but I'm not sure which unit to feature first. My initial ideas for each chapter are:

1. A terminator honour guard featuring marines from several successors. I see them either guarding something of particular significance or else hunting a particularly hated foe.

2. Angels Encarmine - either white Sanguinary Guard or Death Company, or a Vanguard squad using SG jump packs with 'bat' wings to reflect the chapter symbol

3. Flesh Tearers - Brutal-style assault squad with chain axes, heresy style jump packs etc

4. Blood Drinkers - Vampiric-style units based on Mephiston model and featuring grails, longer hair and gothic visual hooks

6. Angels Vermillion - A combination of grey knight and black templar parts to show noble questing knights. Tabards, ornate power armour etc.

7. Knights of the Blood - the rest of the parts from Angels Vermillion. Savage looking combat weapons combined with tilt plates and GK/Crusader helms for the knightly look. A chance to experiment with NMM sky-earth painting on the armour

8. Lamenters - True-scaled Sternguard to represent the 'improved' cursed founding gene-seed.

I'd really love some feedback as I've got all these ideas kicking about and no idea where to start!

Wow, three posts in a row and no replies, seems like it takes pictures to make you guys sit up and comment. Fair enough, here we go:

EDIT:Firstly, let me apologise for the poor pic quality. I've only got my mobile phone at uni and the camera quality on that is shoddy at best.

EDIT 2: I've reposted some decent pics below. I'll phase these ones out as I get better replacements

I've been making progress with my terminator squads, pictured below. I'm not sure what to do with the Sarge's back banner. I'm thinking of painting the crux grey, but I can't decide what to do with the trim.

Last but not least (for today anyway) is my counts-as Lemartes, Brother Bellerophon. This guy was really fun to make, although I had to weight the base with a coin to keep him standing. I've since used miliput on the base to turn it into a regular rockface, but in this picture here you can still see the sprue I used as an armature.

Yeah as I said I'm working with a really shoddy phone camera at the moment as it's all I've got at uni. ONce I get back home I'm gonna take some nicer snaps.

Okay. New non-dodgy phone camera pics this time. I figured I'd show you guys some half decent pics of the new characters I've been building. I've decided to add a few squads from the other successor chapters for some variation, so I'll be showing a few of those too.

I've been kitbashing pretty heavily. First up is my Mephiston counts as, Ashok. Those of you who have read C.S. Goto's deathwatch series will no doubt recognise the name of the most famous Angels Sanguine marine to serve in the Deathwatch. What with the undercoat and poor pic quality I'm not sure f you can make out the details, but he's a kitbash of Dark Angels, grey knights and sanguinary guard bits. I'm particularly proud of the freehand script.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01191.jpg

I wanted a regular Librarian for when I'm not using Mephiston, so I converted Brother Priam here using a Grey Knight's body with a Sanguinary Guard deathmask and jump pack. I had to repose the arm and raise part of his base to get the look I wanted. To finish him off I used the missile launcher hand on an extended arm stolen from an assault marine. I like to think he's swooped down to finish off the herald of Nurgle, and is now summoning a powerful psychic attack to banish the daemon's retinue. His wings have been detached for ease of painting

Last up for the Angels Sanguine is Sanguinary High Priest Tenjin, again based on a C.S. Goto character. He uses the wings from a Bretonian pegasus knight, but otherwise he's a very simple conversion using a sanguinary guard pack, mask and sword on a robed dark angels body:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01200.jpg

As a final sneak peak, here's a Lamenter I made from some spare parts. Not sure what he's going to look like yet, but he's very much PIP:

Hope these photos provoke more comments than the last (admittedly shoddy) bunch. Some feedback would really be appreciated.

Heh... not even commenting on the models yet, but your camera work has improved significantly since the start of the thread! :)

I like the models. Particularly fond of your pegasus wings. I shall look into nicking that idea for my own army, I think. I find the wings on our models a little namby-pamby, sadly.

Your Ashok model is awesome and I love both the chaplain and the high priest. Interested in seeing them when they're finished.

I find your idea of a combined force interesting. I'm a little bit OCD when it comes to army composition - I like everything to match. This can be seen in my determination to run all-jump infantry lists or all-2+SV lists, which is arguably detrimental to my game. I'm curious to see how a combined force army looks when it's all laid out. Have you had more thoughts on how you might do it?

Thanks for the reply. I think the fact I'm no longer using a shoddy 2mp phone camera with no proper focus or macro setting helps a little on the photography front! <_<

The mixed force is based more on which units I like rather than any given tactica. The basic principle is flexibility, as with the exception of the jump-pack troops every unit can be used either on the attack or to hold ground. Anyway I'm not much of a gamer but when I do play it's a beer and pizza type of thing, so I'm not expecting many maxed out tourney style armies.

Here's some further pics in the vain hope of some feedback.

First up is my 'counts as' Dante - Master Sentikan, Chapter Master of the Angels Sanguine. The base hasn't been finished yet but you get the picture of what I'm going for. Other than the Pegusus wings and the EC's sword this all comes from the Sanguinary Guard kit:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01208.jpg

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01206.jpg

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01207.jpg

Both this guy and my Lemartes 'counts as' are my idea of an 'up yours' to TLOS, as I'll take epic poses over gaming advantage any day.

Lastly, this WIP guy is going to represent Castellan Zargo of the Angels Encarmine. I really fancy including some white-armoured Sanguinary Guard and Death Company in the army at some point, so this guy will be their leader.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01210.jpg

I have a few questions over him, mostly over the choice of wings. As a chapter master the standard SG wings don't seem worthy, so I want to give him some bat-style wings ala the AE chapter symbol. My current choices are down to these three.

1. Tyranid gargoyle wings

Pros: lightweight plastic. Cons: Difficult to track down

2. Chaos Possessed wings

Pros: Perfect size for a marine. Cons: Requires a lot of conversion work to fix to jump pack, maybe a bit too chaosy

3. Classic Raptor Pack

Pros: Already a jump pack, cool from a fluff perspective. Cons: Very difficult to find, metal could over balance the mini, haven't seen the component in the flesh.

What do you guys think would be the best option?

Yeah, it is perfect, but I think, you will have problems with inquisition :D

Okay, with all that character focus I thought I'd best show some squad level stuff next. These are the guys I've been working on whilst at uni. Annoyingly when I arrived I realised I'd left the paints to do the jewells and chapter icon freehand behind, which is why these guys are all incomplete. to a certain extent. Now I'm home I'm finishing them off before I progress to my shinier stuff.

First up is my assault squad you've partly seen before. The biggest addition has been the sergeant who was kitbashed using some bits from the DC and SG kits I aquired for my HQs.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01195.jpg

Next up is my tactical sqaud. These are all reclaimed marines and have needed a lot of greenstuffing to salvage them from the over-enthusiastic 'battle damage' their previous owner had given them. I added a few spare bits to cover for areas that weren't salvageable.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01194.jpg

Next up is the progress on my terminators. Here's the first ten man squad (one of whom is currently being assembled):

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01211.jpg

Here are the four (almost) painted members:

These are the custom shoulder pads I'm working on for all of my standard termies, so they don't feel too bad next to the Space Hulk figures:

I've still got two Space Hulk sergeants that need painting, not to mention a handful of other termies. I've decided to do two more squads, another tactical squad including Lorenzo, plus a terminator assault squad. As both the sargeants have bare heads they can't be Angels Sanguine. I've decided to paint Gideon in Angels Vermillion colours and Lorenzo as a Blood Drinker. As for their squads I have a dilema, as I have two ideas:

Plan A: Paint the rest of the squad in the same scheme as their sergeant, representing a squad sent by the successor chapter to aid in the defence of Baal.

Plan B: Paint every terminator as coming from a different successor chapter. The squads would form an honour guard formed by all the successors to defend the most sacred sights of the Sanguine Cult, such as Skyfall, Sanguinius's tomb and other places even outside the Baal system.

Whichever I settle on, I'm going to add more successor squads to the army once the core squads are done. I really fancy adding some Angels Encarmine DC and SG in white armour, Flesh Tearers with FW chain axes and regular Blood Angels in older pattern armour for my heresy collection

I hear you mate. Even pics don't always work for that.

I really like the way you pose your models. Your count as Dante is very cool as is Zargo, however I feel that Chaos Raptor pacs/Gargoyle wings are not really....Angels Sanguine. If you look at their Chapter Symbol, is basically the Blood Angels wings in red with a skull instead of a blood drop, so why not use the SG wings and paint them red? Paired with the white armour, I'm sure it will look fancy. ;)

Same goes for the Librarian, actually. Red wings on blue armour look great I feel.

That's what I really like about your miniatures. If I may utter one thing: On the pictures the paint on your miniatures appears quite thick, some show brush strokes and are quite shiny, especially the red. The shine can be reduced with Matt Varnish, but this can also be done with thinner paints and several layers of your base colour.

That's it. Looking forward to more pics!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

@Kmombe - thanks! These conversions are my favourites too.

@Snorri - Zargo is actually master of the Angels Encarmine, who have a bat-winged blood drop as their symbol. I wanted to make him as a brea to try a different scheme. Eventually I plan to add a squad from each of the major successors, thus the Lamenter as well. I get what you mean about the red. The Shinyness is actually something I've gone for deiberately as I quite like the look. As for the thickness I'll take it on board. Many of these are reclaimed models so the quality isn't great, and it's also my first real experience of painting large flat areas of armour. The army is a bit of a learning curve so I'll take your tips on for my next squad, and give the matt varnish a go soon.

@Black Orange - Glad you think so, I really loved Tenjin's fluff in the inferno short story and wanted a suitably imposing model to count as him. At the moment I'm leaning towards fielding him as Astorath if I decide to make more death company.

Baal calls, and the Angels Sanguine will answer. For the first time in ten millenia, the IX Legion assembles and we shall stand beside our brothers once more as our gene-father intendend. Against the forces of the Great Enemy and the devourering hordes of the Tyranids the sons of Sanguinius shall prevail.

Brothers, hear my vow. I AGPO, swear on the honour of the IX Legion to make ready my forces for the defence of our legion's homeworld. Leading the van will be Captain Zimri of the third company, accompanied by Sergeant Licinius and his devastator squad. Standing with them will be six honoured brothers of the first company, clad in the finest tactical dreadnought plate. Lastly, twenty five neophytes shall have the chance to prove they are worthy of the gift of our Primarch's blood by standing with us in the defence of our legion's home. By this oath of moment I pledge that these knights will be made ready for battle and set sail upon the Sea of Souls to join with the chapter and our legion brothers on Baal by 0313012.M3. Twice shall I make our works known in testiment to our unending duty to Baal and Terra. Should we fail in this, I shall take up the robe of the penitent, lay down my blade and retire to the Librarium to record the history of our chapter so that others may remember our deeds and learn from our failure.

For Sanguinius, for Baal and for the Ninth Legion!
