Sweet! Looking good so far.

I'm just getting the first bit of paint on my own slice of the XII legion so it will be fun to see your 2250point list getting turned into physical models ^_^

So just throwing some colour ideas down today on a space wolf and don't think it turned out to bad for a first attempt

I think I will probably make it a little whiter and go for a bit of a lighter blue as a highlight also.

What are your thoughts

Oh and FYI the blood splatter was only messing about and will be much better on the real thing!

Awesome choice of raider. With all the Spartans running about its so rare to see the awesome Phobos. Your tank weathering looks particularly cool. Any chance we could get a close up or three of the raider?

How did you find the FW transfer sheet to work with for those large vehicle transfers? I've got a Spartan, two raiders and a Typhon to do myself, and I'm thinking of investing in one ^_^

Don't worry, there are Spartans to come too! As for the weathering, thank you for the kind words. Here are a few other shots

Regarding the transfers sure I think they are awesome yet I find them a bit fiddly and hard to make look natural. As you can see from the following pic, after varnish it clearly looks stuck on. Pretty sure it's got underneath it and is more my ability than the transfer itself

I think it's just practice to get right but yeah, a lot of choice in the sheet

For the varnish I use Ar'd coat and I put it on quite thick before I place any transfers, once dried and the transfer is set (micro sol is your friend) i cover it back over with Ar'd coat going further that the first varnish application and it helps a ton. I also recommend that you trim the excess transfer sheet.

looking awesome so far, man! Your weathering is looking great, especially around the treads.

Regarding the transfers, I think one of the things that is affecting you is the rough surface of the tank due to the weathering. It looks from the pictures that you are also getting some "over spray", which is when the particles in the air settle back on the model, causing it to be a rougher surface. It can be helpful for creating a weathered look, but makes things tough if you want a smooth surface.

If you want less of that, make sure you have a lot more ventilation where you are spraying, and don't have anything around the model that will bounce the spray back into the air over the model. Always spray on a flat, open surface and never in a box, for instance. That will help not to obscure the details like the skulls, etc.

keep it up!

Looking good as always! I was just about to chime in with a little Micro sol/set advice and Phalanx beat me to it ^_^

That being said, would you mind elaborating on your weathering process a little? I'm having a little difficulty getting the "just right" look for mud and carbon splatter, especially on large areas like tank armor.

Awesome cheers for the tips guys! Is there anything I can do to rectify the already failed transfer job!?

the weathering goes as follows:

Dab with a sponge some white onto blue areas to show paint peel (blister pack sponge us best)

Dab areas with black (mainly on lips and edges)

Dab a mix of red and brown to form rust

Finally dab with silver to show clean metal

Coat the whole model in gloss varnish and make an oil wash of black and dark brown. Keep it very thin as to not overwhelm just to tone down and give a gritty look

Tracks are done with black, boy brush silver and brush in some brown pigment

Dust us done by brushing in some light earth pigment around the edge if the tracks

Smoke stacks and grills are done with typhos carosion followed by black pigment

Seal the whole lot with matt varnish

I like to use a bug flat brush for the dusting as then it gets in the air and settles in other parts of the model too for a bit of added realism.

I'll do a tutorial when I do my venator ;)

considering the larger size of the transfer, you might be able to use a new, sharp x-acto blade and carefully trim away everything that is "clear". You don't have to press very hard. even if you accidentally cut into some of the red, it will just help make it look more weathered.

Great job on the weathering!  The sandy mud looks great :)  But be mindful of the black weathering as some of the smudges look similar to residue finger prints (front left door)!

Silly question, but at what painting stage did you apply the transfer?  I'm no fan of transfers and haven't applied one in a very long time, but just a quick google search would suggest that once you've applied your undercoating and base layer of paint that the surface will be, you need to gloss or semi-gloss varnish it before applying the transfer - more so if the surface paint used was a flat/matt paint.  I wondered if you had applied the transfer to a matt surface or to an already weathered surface?

There are some good videos up online about how best to apply them, might be an idea to do a little watching before you try again to find an approach that works for you.

GL!

Cheers guys for all the tips and praise!

I shall Defoe check out some vids for the transfers and try and rectify this one.

Next up have 20 marines to finish. Problem being that the undercoat won't hold too well (yes even after cleaning multiple times, curreing time, thin layers etc...) so trying some things to get that rectified.

Then...venator and Spartan!

Looking back and a little closer it looks like your paint is going on quite granulated, this happens to me a lot and I sound the best way to deal with it is to thin my paint even more than I usually do. The transfer in question looks like some wash got underneath it. The varnish will smooth out the surface and help the transfer get a solid seal to the mini.
