In answer to the Sigi's question, not a problem whatsoever.

That one of the smallest legions has an empire has to be attributed somewhere. And the idea of seeing Mufasa (the lions) the king of the pride running things which the Lionnesses (Arpine regiments) couldn't handle is cool.

Perhaps a specific doctrine? Aegis lines for allied SA Detachments (normally Primary Detachment only) but if they do so, cannot take Dracosans? (instead becoming FA rather than DT?)

I take it they are SA rather than mlitia? Or militia with custom doctrine?

Firinnoimeadai

Also known as the truth keepers, thr Forrinnoimeadai are the guardians of the spirit of the Crimson Lions. Where the alauri guard the legions future and the gutuatri guard its traditions, the firinnoumeadai guard its warriors souls, ensuring that no matter what foe they face the, be it a rebel world or a tide of orks, the Crimson Lions will remain steadfast and not falter in their duties. Because of the nature of their duties, the firinnoimeadai are ever vigilant, forever watchful, for one can never tell when a chink will appear in a warriors spiritual armour, a chink that can exploited by rebels and religious fools alike. Wandering into battle wielding a crozius and hoplon shield, the firinnoimeadai take their place alongside their bretheren, an anchor to hold the line in place.

Ancient Ærrion

Like any legion, the Crimson Lions have many contemptors in their arsenal, dreaded machines containing the bodies of their greatest heroes. However, amongst all of these ancient warriors, there's one who's memory is longer than all the rest, who still remembers the bloody wars of unification on Terra and the subsequent glory of the Great Crusade. Ancient Ærrion was one of the first proto astartes to be implanted with the gene seed of Hectarion. Like many of the Terran legionnaires of the III, he was recruited from amongst the Anglyc clans of mid Albyon, a land that legend says was once known as Yorkshyre. Alongside his brothers, he fought in the closing stages of the war on Terra and during the pacification of Luna and in many other battles of the Great Crusade. However, in the Ivraxian campaign he met his match, a vast mechanical construct that was part of the tech-lords bodyguard. Among the veterans who dropped into the Ivraxian fortress hives to fight the tech-lords, he alone survived and even then without much of his right arm and a leg(and with his secondary heart having been ripped out). Realising that he would die unless they did so, the Madrai put Ærrion into a contemptor chassis, so that he might continue to bless the legion with his wisdom for decades to come. And so he has, blaring out his warcrys through the vox systems built into his dreadnought and smashing aside the foes of the Imperium with his upgraded body. However, what other thoughts revolve around his undying head as he see's how the world has changed none can know, nor perhaps would any wish to know.

Seeing as I've got 5 1/2 hours to spare while waiting for my exam, I decided I'd write some stuff on the armour marks and such unique to the III legion.

Over the course of the Great Crusade, as the Crimson Lions expanded their empire north, they became more and more dependent on their empires Forge Worlds to provide them with arms armour rather than Mars. Due to this, and to their specialism in boarding and other zone mortalis actions, an arena of war many later armour marks overlooked, Crimson Lions used a great many variations on the basic armour marks supplied by Mars. While there were many different variations on even these locally produced marks, therewere several main variations which were as follows:
MkIII.B "Mycenae".
While the MkIII.B saw limited service prior to the legions unification with its primarch, the majority of suits entered into service around the time of Hectarions discovery, hence it was named the "Mycenae" pattern. The main change made by the MkIII.B was a more powerful power source, making it better able to carry the extra armour plating found on MKIII suits. Another improvment on the mkIII was the suits internal systems and the helm moving with the wearers head rather than being locked in place like previous mkIII suits.

MkIV "Gryax".
The mkIV Gryax was a varient on the basic mkIV design produced on the world ot Gryax. The Gryax pattern was first developed following the III's limited issuing of mkIV armour. The Crimson Lions quickly found that, while the internal systems were greatly improved over all prior suits, the armour lacked the protection needed in boarding actions. While in any othet legion this may not have been particularly important, those Crimson Lions Brotherhoods equipped with mkIV reported a 6% increase in casualties. So it was that the Gryax was essentialy a mkIV with extra layers of plate bolted on to it. The Crimson Lions also shared blue prints of this design with the Void Eagles,Drowned and Scions Hospitalier, although whether it was ever used by these legions is uncertain.

Surrak bolter
Produced on the forgeworld of Surrak, this was the primary bolters used by the III legions throughout much of the later Great Crusade. While it had a shorter range than the bolters of other legions, the Surrak pattern bolters shells packed a far larger punch than any other bolter in service duringhe Great Crusade(test carried out on a suits of mkIV Gryax armour indicated that out of 5 shots fired, 3 penetrated the armour).

The Crimson Lions gene seed has the following mutations

-An over-active Ossmodula and Biscopea, leading to greater bone and muscle growth as well as tougher skeleton.

-A slightly mutated Occulobe, which leads to all Crimson Lions having grey and slightly feline eyes(it's unknown whether this was a deliberate mutation).

-It's unknown why, but an effect of the III legion gene seed is that, in battle, more adrenaline is released than is normal for an astartes.

-The III legion gene seed can also lead to a condition which apothecaries theorise may stem from a derangement of the cataslepsian node. Occasionaly a Crimson Lion will succumb to this and fall into a fury in which his deranged mind causes him to believe that he is in fact an actual Lion. These individuals are normally either given the Emperors peace or allowed one last glorious charge at the enemy.

Firrinoimaedas Celtonos looked out over the battlefield at the through his silver mask. The sons of Hectarion and Gwalchavad had once again triumphed, as evidenced by the thousands of ork corpses that littered the battlefield. Even as he looked out over the field of triumph, the Wardens of Light and Crimson Lions were pacing the battlefield, finishing any greenskins still clinging to life with quick stabs to the neck or by stamps to the head with their ceramite plated feet, pulverising the orks brains. Celtonos looked over all this with satisfaction. He had always preferred warring against greenskins. It reminded him of the wars he had fought as a tribesman on Mycenae, with the result of the battle being decided face to face, brute force against brute force, no mercy expected by either side and no mercy given. It was war in its purest form and that was the kind of war that forged the Crimson Lions into demi-gods of battle rather than simply exceptional warriors. Then his thoughts were interrupted by the crackle of his vox bead in his ear, followed by the voice of Dryos Halval. "Firrinoimaedas, your presence is required". Celtonos was already moving.

When Celtonos arrived at Halval's position, it was vacated of other astartes. Then he noticed one in the deep red of the Lions, in those parts of his armour where their was still paint left, and there was a massive gash in the side of the astartes head, from which he was bleeding profusely. Quickly analysing the astartes' wounds, Celtonos concluded that the astartes should by all rights be dead. Instead, he was here, in front of Celtonos, eating what appeared to be....the corpse of a Warden. Turning his gaze on Halval, Celtonos growled "You allow him to defile the body of one of our bretheren?". The Dryos responded by saying "I preferred to isolate him". Celtonos' growl subsided slightly and he asked "What do his commander and bretheren know of this?". "Nothing. As far as they're concerned he died due to a power klaw slash to the face. Critical brain damage, died quickly, before the sus an membrane could take effect. A warriors death". Celtonos nodded and walked towards the Lion, energizing his crozius as he did so. How many was it he'd needed to give the Emperors peace to now? Ten? Fifteen? He'd lost count yet he remembered every single one, their animalistic faces, their growls of rage. Sighing, he raised the crozius and then let it drop, crushing the marines skull, killing him instantly. Standing there as Halval harvested the Crimson Lions gene seed, a realization struck Celtonos. They were getting more frequent.

@Mikhal. You bet it did ;)
Decided to make rules for Ancient Ærrion, the oldest dreadnought in the whole III legion.

Ancient Ærrion, 280 points
WS5 BS4 S7 F13 S12 R12 I5 A5 HP4.
Wargear: Fonrirs bite, Tors judgement, Kucholayns shield, the Bloody banner, extra armour, smoke launchers, searchlight.

Fonrirs bite S: user AP:2 rending, shred, murderous strike.

Tors judgement S:6 AP3 R:"12 assault 3, blast, gets hot!.

Kucholans shield: Gives Ærrion a 3++ invulnerable save.

The Bloody banner: All units with legiones astartes(Crimson Lions) within "4 of Ancient Ærrion gain relentless and LD+1.

Special rules: Last of the Blood Wolves, Ancient wisdom, Fury of the ancients, legiones astartes(Crimson Lions), Son of Terra.

Last of the Blood Wolves: Ancient Ærrion may never be in the same army as Hectarion.

Ancient Wisdom: Crimson Lions units retreating within "6 of Ancient Ærrion rally automatically.

Fury of the Ancients: When charging, instead of gaining +1 attacks, Ancient Ærrion gains +D3 attacks and in every subsequent round of combat gains a number of attacks equal to the number of models he killed during the last assault phase.

Son of Terra: If Ancient Ærrion is in your army, Asthetairoi and Veterans become Troops choices.

And I was reading Julius Caesars Gallic war when I thought that it might be cool if the Crimson Lions have a horn they can equip their guys with(like a celtic bucina).
Behona +20 points. May be equipped to any Crimson Lion who has not already been upgraded. All Crimson Lions in the same squad as the equipped model gain +1LD, Fear and Relentless.

Same questions as usual. What rules need to be toned down, do I need to bump up their points cost.

Only thing I'm iffy about would be him gaining a number of bonus attacks in conjunction with the number of models he kills.

S7 Ap2, sure, but, with +D3 on the Charge, he can get up to 10 Attacks Pretty dang easily. Kill 5 Models on the Charge, 2nd round, 10 Attacks at I5. Even Angron has to work for his 10 attacks. He just kinda gets it for free, I feel. If you want to keep it, boost him to ~330 Points especially since hes an HQ Selection.

Rending is also kinda redundant since hes already Ap2. It'd only be useful against Av14 Vehicles.

+++

+20pts for Relentless, Fear and +1LD might be a bit too good. Youd essentially eliminate the main weakness of PA squads with Heavy Weapons with no real downside.

Or, have squads that can Rapid Fire -> Charge.

Yeah, the semi iron warriors rule should work. Otherwise make it a once per battle, or make it so he can't shoot that turn, so it doesn't just work like a banner

So, once again, thanks for the advice guys. In the process of re writing those two's rules.

As it is, I decided to expand on the fluff of Hypaspitai, as I was unhappy just with them being the CL's 1st company. So, without further ado, more fluff.

Translating into low gothic as shield bearers, traditionally on Mycenae, this is precisely what Hypaspists were. While their lord would tear into the enemy with his two handed axe, the Hypaspitai would protect him with their lives, interposing their own bodies between their lord and any man who sought to kill them, shielding him from all foes. So it was that the 1st brotherhood of Clan Mycenor, the warriors chosen to fight alongside their primarch in all engagements, took this name as their own and in battle they fight as the the shield bearers of Mycenae do, forming a solid wall of shields between their primarch and any who would seek to kill him, protecting him with their lives if needs be.

In order for a warrior to join the Hypaspitai, he must distinguish himself sufficiently in battle to catch the eye of either the Captain of the Hypaspitai, Maridius, or the primarch himself. Once he has done so, elevation to the Hypaspitai is assured, as the primarch and his subordinate care little for the experience many legions would demand that such an illustrious warrior posses. If a warrior distinguishes himself, he ought to be rewarded no matter his age, making it not unheard of for getae to jump straight to joining the Hypaspists without having the campaign badges of his elders. Once he has been elevated to the Hypaspitai, a warrior is given full access to their primarchs private armouries, meaning many wield weapons and wear armour that is old and storied, as well as artificier made. While some choose to keep using their previous weaponry, the majority take full advantage of the new armoury made open to them to become more deadly than some Rix or captains of other legions. Wearing plate of adamantium plated in bronze, the Hypaspitai are a group of the most accomplished of the III's legionnaires.

The Origins of the Blood Wolves
The III legion was not among the first legions to be founded as some might assume, in fact far from it. It is often said that the III was founded upon the fields of the battle of Monsa Batonica, where King Artorus of the northern Albyonic kingdom of Jurfik and his Norscan allies had made their last stand. While they had eventually fallen, Artorus and his Hirt had felled dozens of the astartes of the V legion. Impressed by such skill and bravery, the Emperor had offered the survivors a choice. Death or service in the newly formed legiones astartes. While a few chose death before what they saw as slavery, the majority of the surviving warriors of Artorus' army chose to serve in the legiones astartes. So it was that they became members of the III legiones astartes, and set out to carve a new destiny for themselves in the blood of their enemies, yet keeping their ancestors ancient war cry of "Til Uprannan! Til Valhall!". Over the final years of the Unification Wars, the newly formed Blood Wolves would take part in some of the bloodiest battles of the late Great Crusade, taking trophies such as the head of Kalagann and the head of the lord of the Caucasian ethnarchy as well as 100 heads of his Ur-Khasis elite. Muscova, Tempest Galleries, Caucasia. These names and many more were added to the III's banners in triumph, all bloody fields of slaughter where the Blood Wolves had emerged howling in triumph. When the unification wars were over and the last of the Emperors enemies had bowed to him, he gathered the legions to address them. With their banners flying proudly in the wind and their warriors standing in rigid ranks in front of him, he said "Astartes! You came from many different homes. Some of you submitted willingly, others fought bravely for your freedom. None of that matters now. We have cast down the tyrants of old Terra, yet an even greater task stands before us. The galaxy is dissunified, and humanity is scattered across it, locked in petty squabbles with each other. Yet I would unite them if I could. For that I'll need an army. You have been tested in the fires of battle and each warrior here has proven himself a thousand times over. So I ask you all, will you follow me?". While the other legions cheered and shouted, the III remained silent. When the cheering from other legions had died, the marines of the III removed their helms and spat on the earth in front of them and then roared "Til Uprannan! Til Valhall!"

Run into writers block when it comes to the regular Crimson Lions, so I thought I'd flesh out those who followed Turrus into exile in the Maelstrom.

Kyomnaiar

Translating to something roughly approximating "The guardians" in Low Gothic, the Kyomnaiar are Turrus' personal bodyguards and also his most trusted lieutenants. Armoured in glittering suits of gold plate with flowing red cloaks and armed with enormous two handed axes(a popular weapon amongst their loyal brethren) named tusa, weapons they use to deadly effect in battle, fighting their way into the thick of the enemy where they proceed to use their axes to deadly effect, slaughtering their enemies in their hundreds. However, the Kyomnaiar are also Turrus' most successful experiments, having been genetically modified by Turrus in order to enhance their strength, agility and resilience, although some whisper their resilience comes from no gene implant but from the powers of the warp.

Laoghi

The Laoghi are Turrus' oldest warriors, those who followed him into exile, banished as they were for their experiments. Most of these old warriors are bitter souls, hardened by age and their banishment from their legion, disdainful of the young blood introduced into their ranks by Turrus and many of them also refusing to allow their bodies to be augmented as those of their younger brethren are. Having nurtured a hatred in their heart for Turrus, the Imperium and even their own primarch, these veteran fighters are able to channel that hatred in combat and focus it on their immediate opponent, transforming them into bestial, snarling close combat fighters, lacking the restraint found in many legionaries of the III. Most of these astartes have reverted to the barbaric customs of their various homeworlds which include skull taking and even taking their enemies scalps, which some of them then fashion into cloaks and many also refuse to wash their power claws after battle, leading to their claws developing a discoloured dark red hue, a start contrast to the black and gunmetal of the rest of their armour. Using jump packs fashioned so that they appear to have wings and using their blackened and burnt mkVI suits(plunder taken on a raid on a mechanicus ship, although many of the suits have been bastardised to better suit their wearer), these bitter old warriors roar their war cry of "Beannai an Hadai tha torun ih"(translating roughly into Low Gothic as "The crows of Hados are upon you) these warriors fight as sick mockeries of their former selves, unable or perhaps unwilling to see the horrors they have become.

Bunaiar

The new members of Turrus' warband, the Bunaiar are the products of a horrific blending of the process of creating an astartes with the process of cloning(some rumours even claiming they are an attempt by Turrus to breed himself with human women, although all apothaceries dismiss this as impossible). While at birth, the Bunaiar are nowhere near the strength or superhuman capabilities of their "trueborn" brothers, they are then "improved" upon by Turrus with subsequent enhancements to their physiology, a process which drives many mad, making them vicious sadists at best, only ever being able to feel joy when they smash their fist into a living being or hear the explosion of a bolter in a living being. Despite this, they make up the backbone of Turrus' armies

Beainaiath

The Beainaiath, or the blessed, are known by many names among their kin, among them teipannath "failures", oaffaii "horrors" and  meltigaiathan "the cursed". Just the same as the Bunaiar, the Beainaiath are the result of Turrus' genetic experiments but they are different, often born deformed or with strange mutations, a tentacle in the place of an arm, a claw instead of a hand. Not only are they physically different but also mentally, as most seem to have two personalities, constantly vying for control of their body. Their peaceful selves are, aside from their physical mutations, the epitome of everything the Crimson Lions are, proud and noble, although undoubtedly warlike in aspect. However, their war selves are entirely different, snapping with their teeth, drooling and fighting preternaturally quickly and with the strength of 10 astartes, reducing humans to smears of red paste and chanting strange words in a language no human mouth could pronounce.

Maridius is one of oldest of the Crimson Lions still alive that isn't encased in a dreadnought. Recruited from Albyon 18 years after the end of the Unification Wars, Maridius' home people had retained their warlike nature after the Unification Wars, making the youth a good candidate to join the III legion and the long hours of working in his peoples forges had made Maridius stronger than many adult men despite his young age, making him more likely to survive the implantation process. Once he had been implanted with III legion gene-seed, Maridius soon made a name for himself, earning the nickname "Longstride" for his extraordinary height(due to small malfunction in his ossmodula, Maridius grew remarkably quickly even by III legion standards, a change which nearly killed him) he distinguished himself during the Aracan campaign, where he wrestled and ork warlord to the ground and ripped out the beast's spine, an action that so impressed Rix Nathaniel Garro that he elevated Maridius to his personal guard. From here, Maridius rose quickly, becoming a captain within just a few years(following his slaying of the "Emperor" of the Foriss system) and from there rising to become one of the Thinger(an assembly of captains who acted where other legions had a legion master). Then, when the primarch was found, Maridius impressed him(no one quite knows how although some reports say it was through keeping up with Hectarions ability to drink nerith, a feat no other human could manage) and Hectarion elevated him Myrvallen of the newly formed Clan Mycenor. Hectarion even entrusted Maridius with selecting the first astartes to join the Myramodons, his personal guard. In recognition of his new status, Hectarion then gave Maridius would become his trademark weapon, Soul Cleaver, a large two handed broadsword inscribed with Mycenaean runes and curses which are said to shatter the soul of any slain by it.

However, Maridius promotion didn't prevent him from taking to the field, as proven when he led a lightning campaign that subdued the Blood Stars in just 9 months. In recognition of this prowess, Maridius was appointed Tiarnos of the Blood Stars by his primarch, the first Lion to be afforded the title, although many more would follow. This would prove a wise choice, for in the years of Maridius' guardianship, the Blood Stars have become an important and wealthy part of the empire of Mycenae, producing weaponry and warships of a quality unrivalled by any forge world other than Mars and producing regiments of disciplined, brave and skilled Arpine Auxilia, often seen at the frontlines of the Great Crusade.

However, over the years, Maridius has payed heavy price for his loyal service to the Emperor and to his primarch. On Ivrax Secundus, he had his right arm destroyed by an Ivraxian plasma cannon(as well as suffering extensive damage to his lungs, although this was subsequently repaired), with what remained of his arm being amputated and replaced with a bionic limb, earning him the nick name "Iron-arm", name he bears to this day. On Phanton, Maridius had his secondary heart ripped out by a deamon and this too needed to be replaced with a bionic replacement. However, the most serious damage ever done to Maridius was on Chirok V, during a battle with the Ynthik slavers. A campaign which the III legion conducted in conjunction with Grave Stalkers, the Ynthik slavers were powerful pyschers who duped legions of slaves into serving them through physic trickery(hence the need for a force of pariah's to be present). However, Maridius became seperated from the main force of astartes and so from the protection of the pariah's. He was soon attacked by one of the slavers who attempted to ensare Maridius. Maridius managed to resist until an unknown Grave Stalker killed the slaver with a bolter shell to the head. However, the mental strain of resisting the slaver was such that the muscles on the left of Maridius' face were paralysed into a rictus grin, an appearance that so horrified Maridius that he had an ivory face mask made to cover that side of his face, leaving only his eye(which remained unparalyzed) visible. Maridius subsequently blamed this injury on the Grave Stalkers and harbours an intense hatred of that legion ever since. The most recent injuries Maridius incurred were fighting against the Qarith when a Qarith warriors talons left Maridius blind in his right eye and with an enormous scar bisecting the right side of his face, with his left being saved by his face mask.

Equerry fluff
Called "Silver-tongue" by his brothers, Vericos is a relatively young astartes at only 38 years of age. However, despite his youth(and recklessness) Vericos is the equerry of his primarch, dealing with delegates the primarch has no time for and as the Myramodons are Hectarions martial guards, so Vericos is his political guard, protecting his primarchs reputation as the Myramodons protect his person.

Vericos first rose to prominence during the subjugation of Torinak Alpha. The worlds inhabitants had steadfastly refused to accept Imperial rule and had destroyed a small III legion force sent to bring them back into the fold, led by Myrvallen Bryn. Hectarion was preparing to descend upon the world alongside the entirety of Clans Mycenor and Briganda and bring it into line. However, before he could do so, he decided to give the Torinae one last chance to enter the Imperium peacefully. At first, he was going to send Maridius, his sword arm, but before the shuttle departed, a young Crimson Lion from Clan Briganda begged the honour of going in Maridius' place, saying he preferred that the legion lose him than Maridius. While normally Hectarion wouldn't even give this request a second thought, on this occasion some instinct seems to have made him agree. The young astartes was called Vericos "Silver-tongue" and was well known as a wily trickster amongst his bretheren. However, over the course of 48 hours he managed to negotiate a peacefull settlement with the Torinae, granting them slightly greater privileges within the realm of Mycenae than other worlds(such as not being part of any Tiarna) in exchange for them joining the Imperium peacefully and surrendering those responsible for the earlier deaths of Crimson Lions. Following this act, Vericos was named "Hero of Mycenae", with the right to wear a laurel wreath atop his helm and some nicknamed him "Peace-maker", although Vericos himself continued to refer to himself as "Silver-tongue". However, Hectarion was still reluctant to appoint an equerry, on tje grounds that he had never loved politics as some of his brothers did. In the end, it took an intervention by his brother, Alexandros of the Fifth, to persuade Hectarion to make Vericos his equerry. Since then, Vericos has handled the politics that Hectarion is too pre occupied to deal with or with those Hectarion wishes to keep at arms length(such as members of the Administratum seeking to collect tithes from the empire of Mycenae). However, it would be a mistake to assume that Vericos' is a purely political animal. While he can frequently be found in the debating chambers of Hellia, Vericos is also often fighting alongside his primarch, wielding his power maul, a weapon Vericos favour due to its ability to kill with one blow. Not only this, but Vericos also wears a suit of armour many believe is more suited to legion like the Wardens of Light than the brutal sons of Mycenae, as it is chased in silver and has an eccentric face mask. Despite this, none may dispute Vericos' martial skill as his showy armour frequently draws enemy champions to him in battle and it is one of Vericos' proudest boasts that his armour has yet to be scratched.
