Here's a quick reference for the all of you to see which commanders you want to take for which job.

All bubbles/auras are for UNITS within 6" unless otherwise noted.

Also remember, as per 8th ed. aura rules, these all affect the model too, unless otherwise noted.

Also needs to be mentioned that these will only affect your Chapter.

CAPTAIN -

*  "Rites of Battle" - Reroll to hits of one

CHAPLAIN -

*  "Litanies of Hate" - Reroll failed hits in combat.

*  "Spiritual Leader" - Use Chaplain's Leadership.

PRIMARIS LIEUTENANT - (74)

* "Tactical Precision" - Reroll to wounds of one

COMPANY ANCIENT

*  "Astartes Banner" - Add one to Leadership

* "Astartes Banner" - Roll a 4+ for any <Chapter> Infantry MODEL that dies within 6" and that model may shoot one weapon or make one attack.

PRIMARIS ANCIENT - (same as COMPANY ANCIENT)

CHAPTER ANCIENT - (same as COMPANY ANCIENT)

BLOOD ANGEL SPECIFIC HQ

DANTE -  (215)

* "Chapter Master" - Reroll failed hit rolls.

- NOTE: There is a typo here, as it says friendly Blood Angels - not UNIT or MODELS - where as every other Chapter Master entry says "units"

* "Death Mask" - Enemies at -1Leadership within 3"

TYCHO - (95)
* "Rites of Battle" - Reroll failed hits of one

THE SANGUINOR - (170)
* "Aura of Ferver" - Add one to attack characteristics.
* "Death Mask" - (Same as DANTE)

CORBULO - (94)

* "RED GRAIL" - BA Infantry and Bikers increase their Strength by one.
* "RED GRAIL" - BA units generate an extra attack in combat on hits of six. (tese dont generate extra attacks)

SANGUINARY PRIEST - (69 Base)

* "Blood Chalice"  - BA Infantry and Bikers increase their Strength by one.

SANGUINARY GUARD ANCIENT - (106 Base)

* "Blood Angels Banner" - Reroll failed wounds of one in combat

* "Blood Angels Banner" - Auto Pass morale check

TERMINATOR ANCIENT - (117)

* "Archangels Standard" - Reroll failed hit rolls in combat

* "Archangels Standard" - Add one to leadership

LEMARTES -  (129)

* "Guardian of the Lost" - DC use his leadership

* "Fury Unbound" - DC reroll failed charges.

ASTORATH - (143)
* "Redeemer of the Lost" - BA units use his leadership

* "Redeemer of the Lost" - DC automatically pass morale

* "Litanies of Hate"- Reroll failed hits in combat

* "Mass of Doom" - Once per game all units within 6" roll a d6 and get:

1: A mortal wound.
2-5:  +1 to hit in Combat

6: +1 to hit in Combat and a 4++ save until the end of your turn.

Enjoy.

Honestly the re-roll to-hit abilities are amazing.

For comparison: the T'au Commander lets units in 6" range re-roll to-hit rolls once per game (or allows to advance and shoot as if they hadn't moved this turn). To get re-rolls of 1s they either have to use up one of their Battlesuit slots for a support system or have a Markerlight on the target or have a squishy Ethereal within 6" while staying stationary that Movement phase.

And we already have superior BS (BS3+ compared to BS4+ of T'au). It also allows to pretty much always overload plasma weapons without much risk of blowing yourself up which lets us wound other MEQs on 2+ instead of 3+.

Aye I think marines this edition are defined by their heroes, which makes sense as they are supposed to be mighty and inspiring overlords of battle.

They're like focused Doctrines that vanilla had in 7th but not as OP.

So far the points-to-value ratio for me has seen the following 3 units come out tops.

1.  Astorath.

With incredible buffs to all marines nearby via litanies, and the ability for a chunky DC to not take any casualties, I think he's a great choice.  His special once off is also exceptional and I think quite cool.

2. Corbulo.

While limited to running of being transported, Corbs' ability to grant +1 AND then generate extra attacks is fantastic.  Combine this with Litanies, and you've got some serious combat potential.  Add to the fact, that if you're running expensive models like Terms or Sang Guard, he can bring one back, and can reroll his narthecium ability.

3.  Primaris Lieutenant.

For his reroll wounds of 1, I think this is incredible.  Added to synergise with the other guys above, you've got some solid potential.  Otherwise, keep him backfield and let the firepower raindown, whilst being supported.  I think this guy will see his way into my army very quickly.

Other honourable mentions:

4.  Sanguinor.

Not bad. The +1 is solid, but at 170 points, he's pushing things.

5.  Dante.

Reroll all to hit, makes him a great shooty support with the Primaris.  But, at 215, and no other ability (unlike the other chapter masters), I'm afraid he doesn't make the cut.

6. Ancients - the gimmicky 4+ to get off a last ditch shot is great for dreads, and Devs and things like that.  But, i'm not convinced about much else.

Don't forget Sanguinary Guard Ancient - rerolls of 1's to wound and morale test immunity for all BLOOD ANGELS, can be your warlord to self buff and allow himself to reroll all to hit rolls.

Pretty tasty, but low wounds.

Run him near a captain to reroll all hits and wounds of 1.

Thank you for this reference, Mort!  I definitely agree with the sentiment here that marine's strength seem to be their heroes.  That feels especially true for us.  I'm actually really looking forward to using the Astorath/Lemartes duo (in narrative play).  I feel like those two will have great synergy with each other and a pool of Death Company around them.  Dante may not be the be-all-end-all for combat, but he'll have a niche roll to fill somewhere.

Does anyone happen to know what other Chapter Master's bring to the table? Dante seems so underwhelming to me

Calgar: re rolls hits the same as all chapter masters and gives 2 command points

Helbrecht: re rolls and +1 strength in a six inch bubble

Shrike: re rolls and re rolls charge distance for jump units six inch bubble

hs'stan: re rolls and re roll hits and wounds for melta and flamer weapons in six inch bubble

Azreal: re rolls, plus 1 command points, and a 4++ six inch bubble

Logan: re rolls plus wolf guard units don't take moral tests within six inches

Draigo: re rolls, something against daemons, psyker

A 4++ invuln bubble? One of these Chapter Masters is not like the others...

Yup ;)

Its frustrating.

At first glance, DA made out like bandits.  I think theyre the strongest given the fact they have access to everything and more.

SW next, followed by BA (if only because variety).

Even the captains are great- should take a look at  Sicarius.

Using Seth is also extremely limiting. You end up losing bonuses from all other Named characters. So I just see him as a secondary to get more dettachment. So you run one detachment as ba and a separate one for flesh tearers and localize bonuses to those individual detachments.

Great write-up Mort.

What I find strange is how much they've trumpeted "the end of the Death Star era..."

....yet all I can do is sit here and think "how many units can get into overlapping 6" fields and how many auras can I pack into one army?"

Wow I had not realized how mistreated Dante was. Poor guy.

I will note that I am a big of the Sanguinary Guard ancient. Running him along with a Captain seems like a really good way to go.

I think a Sanguinary Ancient escorting Lemartes/Astorath and a DC bomb could be quite delicious.

You'll note how every single one of those has 2 special abilities.

But Dante gets 1 (the re-rolls To Hit; not counting the Death Mask) because 1500 years of kicking :cuss and chewing bubblegum is more the latter than the former, apparently.

Hey Mort, Astorath's entry should look like this

ASTORATH - (143)
* "Redeemer of the Lost" - Blood Angel units within 6" use his leadership
* "Redeemer of the Lost" - DC within 6" automatically pass morale
* "Litanies of Hate"- Reroll failed hits in combat
* "Mass of Doom" - Once per game all units within 6" roll a d6 and get:

I love the idea of Primaris Lieutenant standing back and making those lascannon predators really work.

Could make for some nice models too, more commanding and directing fire than "im yet another space marine with a big sword raaaahhhh".
