I was talking with a friend online this weekend and ended up ordering the Ancestral Recall roller based on this picture:

Hidden Content

We were talking color schemes for my basing and kicking around ideas. Warm tones were an obvious choice. I showed him that picture because I was thinking of using it for a base pattern and we both realized the scheme used in the photo is a good idea of what could be done. I'll probably stick to a warm/light brown or sand color. I'm thinking a faint purple wash in the grout lines to subtly tie in the eyes and emblem. I may look to really thin down the teal I use to wash that over the ornate details to give them a very soft glowing/OSL effect. and fill in the grooves.

The roller will probably take a couple weeks to get to me since it's being shipped out of Spain so I'll have to hurry up and wait in the meantime. I guess I can start clipping sprues and scraping mold lines.

These look interesting, but don't immediately scream astartes to me.  I can see Tzeentch or Harlequins on them though.

Give the bases a different paint job and I may have to eat my words.

Looks like nice ecclesiastical base to me. Good for any Shrine World type world especially. Will work well on any urban table I think.

I got a 'metaphysical space' vibe from them where the bases show off a lot of the circular glyphs. I'm not too hot on the base with the small square/bar patter. One thing I haven't shared for the lore of my new KT/chapter is that they will be a ship (or fleet if I build out a chapter) based operation. Because of their mission they aren't able to settle onto any static world, they must always be on the move and ready to deploy. Because they will live in the stars I thought this was a fitting style to match up with that bit of lore.

There's so much awesome stuff in this thread.

Good luck with the kill team project. The light grey armour sounds fun to paint on a small squad like that.

that base looks great I think.  Reminds me of a church or cathedral.  The more great Ideas you come up with the more I think Ill just copy.  I was thinking of making a 3 battalion with 4 smash captains (3+shrike) .  I needed a new captain in a new company.

Enter captain "Hemlock" kneeling on one of these bases. Wearing dragonborn armour, of the Khundryl Burning Tears Company.

'Beneath skins and furs a strange grayish Armour that looked almost reptilian, long mustaches, knotted beards and spiked braids - all black disguised most features altho what remained was sun dark-end and angular.

Decided I needed to start clipping sprues and getting stuff ready for paint. First up is my Reiver Sgt who will be my leader. I was going back and forth between two poses but I think I've settled on this one:

Hidden Content

He's equipped with a bolt carbine and combat knife and I wanted to model him as such. I think this pose looks cooler than the other one (end of post). Also I can easily magnetize the carbine arm and throw heavy bolt pistol on him if I ever run him with that load out. I still have to add the accessories and grenades but the basic idea is there.

Here's the other option that I was first considering:

I think the Reiver is better posed with the knife in hand, clear of its sheath; that will show he's ready to make contact with the enemy. Maybe you should look up screencaps from 'Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater', specifically that of Snake (the player character) holding a pistol in one hand and a knife in the other, ready to both shoot and stab his enemies in close quarters?
Wolf Scout- Catachan barking toad eggs+ Thousand Sons Marine= Fun! (Wolves of Catachan)

Warhammer 40,000+ Star Wars- Rian Johnson- Reylo= AWESOME! (Knights of Renaissance)

Reasons to use the Steel Crusaders ('Codex: Space Marines' supplement) or the Iron-hearted Angels ('Codex: Blood Angels' supplement): Because you think giving Sternguard Veterans a heavy bolter wtih special issue HEAVY BOLTER ammunition is ALMOST as much fun as shoehorning an Earthshaker cannon into a Land Raider.

I'm very familiar with MGS and thoroughly enjoyed the games. I think my issue with the second buy is he seemed to static. In a unit of 10 he wouldn't look out of place because there would be a lot of dynamic poses around him. In KT fill so few models I think I want each one to look as lively as possible. Plus he's got magnets now so he's extra awesome :)

I agree on your thinking about posing. The second pose he’s ready and waiting. But the first pose catches a moment as he’s leaning into a charge and drawing his blade to strike as he goes in. It’s not always easy to get motion in a miniature that never moves, but you’ve got it there.

Intercessor Gunner is done (his barrel still needs to be drilled though)

He's rocking a Stalker Bolt Rifle with an AGL and the Demolitions specialism. 30" Krak grenades shall be lobbed down range with no penalty to hit. I plan on keeping him in the backfield with another Intercessor with the Comms specialism so he can get rerolls.

I made his AGL by chopping up the lower portion of a stern guard combi bolter and removing the sling. I then took a Primaris rifle and carefully removed the sling from the front attachment and glued it back in place. I added some bits from a scout kit to the sling to represent the grenades he will be carrying.

I am not sure where to put his sicae (knife). I'm debating between his back, left front belt, or his left armor plate. I think I may end up going with the back because it's out of the way, but I feel like it looks to busy there. Any input is appreciated.

OK... trying to figure out what to do for my combat intercessor.

He's got:

Auto Bolt Rifle (I figure I'll be advancing him so I want him to still be able to shoot)

Bolt Pistol

Power Sword

I have a model that has the PS and pistol, but then I have no rifle on him... I'm debating how much work I want to put into this... I could clean up a rifle to remove the hands and then make sling out of masking tape... I may have to just for the sake of it being a cool/unique conversion for me.

Combat Sgt is mostly done after a little bit of converting. I started with one of the LTs from the Dark Imperium box:

Hidden Content

I didn't like his pose... I felt like he was taking up too much space and was just flailing about. I tried cutting his arm up to reposition but nothing was working. After some thinking and tial and error I decided to swap his Power Sword to a Reiver arm and use a Reiver Bolt Pistol arm. I like the Reiver pistols a lot more and this gave me a more dynamic pose that kept the arms around the body... which is what you usually want if your in CQB.

Too me he looks like he is about to cut his enemy in half with a brutal sweep of his sword:

Hidden Content

Hidden Content

I pinned the sword and hilt to either side of a small pin i drilled through the hand for stability (sorry forgot to take a picture). The right Reiver shoulder doesn't take a pad so that got a bit of shaving and sanding to fit a shoulder pad on it. These pads were place holders for photos. I have some pads from my Calth box that have raised metal edges that I am going to put on him. It makes sense to me that a melee guy would have a little extra protection and these will visually represent that.

I'm still not sure how to represent his rifle. I'm thinking I may just glue it to his base behind him to make it look like he threw it down as he got into close combat.

Comms Specialist is nearing deployment-ready status:

Took a Heavy Bolter backpack and converted it to be a radio instead. Added a handle to the ammo belt because I wasn't sure what to do with it. Now it's an extra way to lug the thing around if it's detached from the main back pack. Cut up a sniper rifle for one antenna and used a pin for the other. The pin needs cleaning up as some extra glue got on it. I took the models left arm and cut it below the pad so I could have it look like the marines is examining his readout and relaying firing instructions. I was thinking of greenstuffing some cables but I think it might be too much. I'm happy with him for now.

EDIT: Grammer is hard.

Combat Intercessor Sgt model figured out:

Hidden Content

Here's the question. His weapon won't fire anymore, the Marine knows he was on his last mag of bolt rounds. Would he drop the mag to check for a jam or just discard his weapon because he's so in tune with his tool that he knows it didn't fail and is empty? I'm not sure if I should remove the mag and hollow out the well or leave it modeled still inserted.

Idea: Cut a trench into the dropped boltgun, and embed a broken blade- from a Tyranid scything talon, Chaos Space Marine power sword/axe, Necron warscythe, Ork choppa, or what have you- in that trench. Add bloodstains of the appropriate color to the base, to show your Marine quickly drew his pistol to shoot and kill the attacking enemy, instantly avenging the damage to his weapon.

That should look cool.

Bjorn’s onto something. Implying a Bolter would jam is heresy, so being made damaged in battle makes sense.

I’d maybe think about how it’s oriented next to the marine. It seems an odd way to land if he’s dropped it.

Hrmm these are good ideas...

I may steal this to model my storm bolter onto my Captain model seeing as all Captains in 8th gained and extra weapon and WYSIWYG is a pain like that ...

Now that you mention it, it looks as if the Marine operated his bolt rifle with his left hand, and the pistol with his right. Considering eye dominance is a thing, that's an unusual habit.
