funkymunk123 Posted July 19, 2011 Share Posted July 19, 2011 Okay so after a day of posting a few pics and general SW stuff on here it's great to hear people actually want to know about my technique. So quite simply here are the stages i go through to get my colour of Space Wolf armour. Paints/washes you will need: Chaos Black Spray Skull White Spray Codex Grey Devlan Mud Fang Grey (50/50 mix of Codex Grey & Space Wolves Grey) Gryphonne Sepia Vermin Brown Space Wolves Grey STAGE ONE: Now this may seem a little strange but my undercoating technique really does work very well. Basically i undercoat the model with chaos black spray first, wait for it to dry AND then overspray with Skull White. Now theres two reasons for this..... 1.) The white spray sticks to the matt black undercoat better i find, you don't get any instances where the white spray rubs off the models due to finger/case abrasions. 2.) Creates a natural shade element on the model, helps me to see where the white spray comes out lighter to highlight more there and leave the low receses darker. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6126/5952407927_a12c99a9b2.jpg STAGE TWO: Apply a basecoat of Codex Grey to all of the armour, now make sure you're watering down your paint with water so it flows really nicely. Usually i do two thin layers on the armour first of all. He should then look like this..... http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6015/5952962264_6af088098d.jpg STAGE THREE: Then apply a wash layer of devlan mud to the armour to get some nice dark & dirty shading on it! Now you don't need me to tell you how to wash...... http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6008/5952963350_fb9e82339c.jpg STAGE FOUR: Next stage requires abit of Blue Peter skills (here's one we made earlier) and mixing up a pot of 'Fang Grey', basically it's a 50/50mix of Codex Grey & Space Wolves Grey, half a pot of each into a mixing /empty pot and bob's your uncle, you got some FANG GREY!! Now this is really the key to getting the armour looking amazing. It's quite strange cus when you apply it it looks like codex grey but lighter, then when you add all the other colours onto the model later the blue from the Space Wolves Grey in the mix really comes through, it's a trick of the eye as a friend who is way smarter than I tells me. So once again, layer the armour with Fang grey, and he should look like this..... http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6141/5952411555_dd073d6187.jpg http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6146/5952965430_928a0593de.jpg STAGE FIVE: Now we just mix a little spit of Vermin Brown and Gryphone Sepia in a 1:1 mix, this is so you get the vermin brown to react like a wash when mixed together. If you like you can use a drop of Matt Medium to get the colours to really start grooving together. Then just grab a fine detail brush and run it in ALL those cracks, creases, plates and soft armour joints. Basically where any dirty/rust would get into Avec le..... http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6137/5952413605_40357e8b23.jpg http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6003/5952414731_ec020eb0f7.jpg STAGE SIX: And now we're on the final straight, after stage five, if you need to you can touch the areas back in with some Fang Grey. Finally just go & grab a pot of Space Wolves Grey and a fine detail brush from earlier (or a new one, if thats your bag, if you swing that way.....hey i'm not here to judge!) and do a final edge highlight around all the armour plates. This is the time consuming bit tbh but totally worth it in the end! Bat33.1 Posted October 2, 2011 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Very well done and thank you for the tutorial :P This has given me the inspiration I need to restart my wolves it's not GW 'baby blue' - which isn't to my taste - but it's much more pleasing to my eye than the current vogue for neutral grey or pre heresy grey which I've been using even though I'm not totally satisfied with it. Its only taken me 3 SW armies and over 15 years to finally do it this way, But yours are so much better than mine. Franc Posted October 20, 2011 Share Posted October 20, 2011 Very nice, indeed. I've tried it myself on one model, dedicated couple of hours to try out your scheme. Great tabletop quality and fast to paint once you get the grip. I did one slight adjustment - I used Astronomican Grey (a Citadel Foundation range color) for final highlight, since Space Wolves Grey was too bluish for my taste at that stage. Ant Posted December 4, 2011 Share Posted December 4, 2011 Hey. I am currently in the process right now of painting a miniature using this method. After the undercoating phase I went to start putting on the codex grey. The Codex grey paint I am using isn't the 'foundation' or newest one GW gave released, its the older one in the clear hard plastic bottle with the black cap & blue label. The grey doesn't seem to go onto the white undercoat very well. I water it down 1/1 but it seems to spread thinly and you can still see white through the grey. Also when washing it with Devlan mud I find it doesn't sink very well into the recesses of the armor. Why is this? I tried watering the devlan mud down a little also. I'm back & in the hobby madness of painting again! I'm currently working on replicating the scheme to the new paints GW have brought out so will be keeping posted on how this is going over the next week! I've got my work cut out for me as in March I brought five boxes of thunderwolves & six boxes of Fenrisian wolves...... ......yes I have a problem!
