The Tyrant Rises - Update 5/18/15 - Tac Marines Done

Recommended Posts

So I need some opinions. I got the legion preators for Xmas and I have already decided that the power armored one will be converted into my captain. I am thinking about giving him a relic blade from a modeling perspective, is it a good choice game wise for a captain?

Secondly I can't decide whether I should just paint up the termi one as a one off heresy era model or should I convert him into my chaplain for my Claws?

Greetings brothers!

Now that I have finished my work on Shrike of the cowardly and blindy emperor worshiping Raven Guard found here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284259-shrike-conversion-done/ I can get back to my favorite silver sociopaths.

As mentioned in my last post I got the Legion Preators for Christmas and quickly inducted them into the Tyrant's ranks. I was unsure what to do with the Termi captain and was considering on just painting him as a one off Heresy era marine but after a few minutes thought decided he'd serve better enforcing the Tyrant's will.

Let me introduce the Chaplain of the 1st Company and Enforcer of Huron's Will.

Those greenstuff "eyeballs" will be his helmet lenses if you were wondering. The skull is one of the old WFB Skeleton skulls with some Dragonforge tubes and greenstuff. He is pretty much done being converted except for his gun. Right now I am debating either having his storm bolter slung under neath his pointing arm by a leather strap or just swapping out the pointing hand and having him shoot. I'm leaning towards the slung idea although that's just more greenstuff/plasticard work for me plus it covers up a considerable portion of the side of his upper leg on that side. There is a pretty tenacious mold line on that leg that I'm having trouble getting rid of, at least this will cover it up a bit. When I paint him I think he will have entirely black armor instead of the silver that all my other specialist will have. He will either just have a blue and gold shoulder pad or the pointing arm will be silver with the blue and gold pad, not sure yet.

Now the big guy, The Tyrant's Champion and Captain of the 2nd Company, Corien Sumatris!

Originally he was just going to be a captain with a relic blade but once I had glued that sword arm on there I knew he had to be Sumatris. He is also for the most part done, I need to put a little more detail on the inside of the storm shield such as a power generator and maybe a few more fiddly bits on the bolter and a slain enemy champion's helmet on the base.

I am really happy with the open hand, I feel it really conveys his confidence and to an extent arrogance, I feel like it says "who's next?" when coupled with the rest of the model. Its made out of a left hand that holds the bolter. I cut the thumb off, cut the fingers apart and bent them into place and then sculpted the palm detail and his new thumb. I also had to reshape the glove part on his forearm a bit and the back of the hand.

The helmet was a huge pain to fit on this body. I pretty much shaved off all the detail on the opposite side of it and beveled the heck out of the bottom to get it to fit in. I played around with using a bare head but I always pictured Sumatris with a helmet due to his shadowy nature and circumspect past. If you are unaware it is rumored he is actually a member of the Tiger Claws that was folded into the Astral Claws and hidden within their number by Huron. The helmet makes him more mysterious.

The most difficult part is his Stalker Bolter. Its described as a Bolter made for him by Valthex that is linked to his armor and sits over his shoulder so he can use it hands free. All of the conversions I have seen of this online just look like a bolter glued onto a marines backpack. I thought of the old 54mm Inquisitor Convenant model that had a shoulder mounted gun when I made mine. The main body of the gun is the Bolter part of the new combi bolter. I feel like it looks enough like a Bolter but unique enough, and most importantly, slim enough, to be shoulder mounted. I added a scope, a Dragonforge tube and some random plasticard and greenstuff detail to break up the profile a bit. I am thinking about filling in the grooves on the "grip" part to make it smooth and maybe adding a tiny skull.

Sorry for all the bare plastic lately, I have a Sternguard I just finished and his base just needs some snow, so I should have him up tomorrow or Thursday.

For the Tyrant! :)

That Corien Sumatris is fantastic. cool.png I understand what you mean by most versions looking like a bolter just stuck to a backpack, but you've done a great job on the spectre pattern boltgun.

As for the Chaplin, I do go with the underslung storm bolter idea. The pointing hand is too good to get rid of. ;)

Looking forward to seeing more.

Sumatris is outstanding. I think GSing the grip on the bolter would be a good idea, though, and reinforce the point that it was a bespoke weapon made by Valthex, as it still looks a little bit like a regular bolter flipped upside down.

Where is the power sword arm from, if I may ask?

Yep, I say go for it. You might also want to change the banana magazine for a drum since a) it would be a bit hard to change that magazine out, and b ) it would make it even more automated looking (like the heavy bolter turret on the new sicaran venator for example)

Normally I am all for chaplains being as gaudily decorated as a roman catholic space pope, but your conversion off of the terminator praetor is pretty fabulous in that it is subdued.  So kudos on exercising restraint there.

This is a truly amazing, brother. You have inspired me to make an astral claws army( as soon as I get the funds :P). But I have a little input: if you're making a guard army you should use space marine models( and say they're like normal guardsmen just proxies for fluff) because the tyrants legion actually featured veteran astral claws as commanders( I plan on doing this once I start an army)

He's making a "Tyrant's Legion" army from the FW Imperial Armor Volumes 9&10 the Badab War. There are specific rules and information in the books for the marine squads and guard as well. There is no need to proxy marine minis as guardsmen and it would actually be really confusing to do so. Check the Mengel's Miniature's link in nurgling's sig to see his Guard minis, you'll see what I mean.

Oh my bad I thought he would make two different armies. I'm am planning on making two different armies though and plan on doing that. It wouldn't be much confusing if you limit the proxies anyways, say a company command squad(only) that are proxies(marines) as long as you state it's just for fluff purposes

And I fully understand what you mean I've been following this thread for a while

I don't agree that a marine mini would be a fitting guard proxy, especially in a Tyrant's Legion list but I don't want to derail Nurgling's topic.  I guess I'll wait and see how you explain it in your own wip thread.

Buvalu's service record within the Astral Claws is a story of extreme perseverance and ruthless persecution of the Emperor's foes. While he still fought within the 3rd company as a Tactical Marine he took part in a battle against an element of a Tyranid splinter fleet. His squad became cut off from the rest of the force and quickly surrounded by the alien menace. One by one his battle brothers were dragged down below the monstrous tide until just his Sargent and himself remained. Running low on ammunition they received word that a relief force was inbound and they only had to hold out for 2 more minutes. With salvation in sight it seemed as though they would survive and then the tide turned against them. A massive Carnifex lumbered through the swarm towards them which his Sargent bravely charged, his power fist crackling. Tasked with holding off the smaller aliens Buvalu could only watch as his Sargent struggled against the behemoth. After several seconds the Carnifex was clearly winning, tearing into the marine's armor and throwing him near limp form to the ground. Unwilling to see the entirety of his squad fall Buvalu charged between the beast and its prey spraying it with the remaineder of his bolt rounds. With death looming over him he grabbed the last 3 of his grenades and hurled them into the beast's maw just as it snatched him off the ground in its crushing claws. The resulting blast blew apart the Carnifex from within and hurled Buvalu against the adjacent rocky outcrop knocking him unconscious as he heard the sound of an approaching Thunderhawk.

Several days later he awoke within the apothecarium  to discover that despite his efforts his Sargent was overrun by the lesser aliens before the relieving Marines could reach them, leaving him the only surviving member. To make matters worse a large portion of his body, including most of his lower face and left eye were badly burned or gone altogether. The Apothecary's called it a miracle from the Emperor that he survived at all. Where other's saw a miracle Buvalu only saw a cruel joke and an eternal mark of shame in his failure to save any of his squad. His heroic last stand saw him promoted to the ranks of the 1st Company and assigned within a Sternguard squad. He he fought beside the likes of Ira and Zaidu for the entirety of the Badab War. As the war progressed and the Astral Claws renounced their ties with the Imperium Buvalu saw it as a perfect opportunity to vent his frustration against the Emperor who had forsaken him against the alien swarm. Taking his wrath out on the loyalist marines his kill tally was unparalleled within his squad. Unlike some of his brothers he did not particularly support his Tyant's position or oppose it. He merely followed his orders and used the opportunity to become lost in his own form of redemption. He finally fell fighting in the rearguard as his squad retreated through the ruins of the Palace of Thorns, selling his life to save those of his Battle-Brothers.

Well there's my latest Sternguard, I guess they can't all live through the war. Here's a picture of the whole gang so far.
