Titulum enim Angelica de Sanguine

This article has been made for users of Codex Blood Angels.

I have found that when I come to adding text to my scrolls, plates and decorative plaques my mind goes totally blank. I can't think of more than a few words that I've already used to death. When I look to the community for a quick answer I'm always left wanting, so I thought I'd try and do something about it. I've done some research (mainly look in the codex) and gathered information from you lovely lot and compiled a reference list to be used as a source of inspiration.

Verba Angelica

First I'd like to start with single words that represent and exemplify the Blood Angels way of war, ethos and culture. Followed up by some common words translated into Latin.

Honour
Valour
Blood
Angel
Sanguine

Nomen Angelica.

Many works of fiction can be a source of inspiration when it comes to naming Blood Angels from official cannon to classical literature. Some of the more popular places to find names are Angelic choirs and the Divine Comedy. I've left out the obvious names like the ones used for company captains and special characters, but I'm sure you can find them if you want them.

Laudo et Dictum

Nothing looks finer on the side of a vehicle than a well painted quote or motto. The populous at BnC have been very hard at work with coming up with translations and ideas for us all to use.

Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...
There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain...

Ira sancta imperatoris, libera nos
sacred wrath of the emperor(?)

Dies irae venit, dies poenae venit
(The day of wrath has come, the day of punishment has come.)

Incinerate haereticum. Caedite mutantem. Purgate impurum
Burn the heretic. Kill the mutant. Purge the Unclean.

Dolor deliratio sensuum (est). Desperatio deliratio mentis (est)
Pain is a delusion of the senses. Despair is a delusion of the mind.

Aut vincere, aut mori
To win/conquer or to die.

Qui audet, vincit.
Who dares, wins.

A ciascuno il suo.
English translation: To each his own.

A mali estremi, estremi rimedi.
English translation: Desperate times call for desperate measures.

A tutto c'è rimedio, fuorchè alla morte.
English translation: There is a cure for everything except death.

Batti il ferro quando è caldo.
English translation: Strike when the iron is hot.

Cambiano i suonatori ma la musica è sempre quella.
English translation: The melody's changed but the song remains the same.

Chi ben comincia è a metà dell'opera.
English translation: A good start is half the battle

Chi è causa del suo male piange se stesso.
English translation: He who has created his own evil cries over the same.

Chi non risica, non rosica.
English translation: Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Chi più sa, meno crede.
English translation: The more one knows, the less one believes.

Chi vince ha sempre ragione.
English translation: Might makes right.

Finchè c'è vita c'è speranza.
English translation: Where there's life, there's hope.

Meglio un giorno da leone che cento da pecora.
English translation: Better one day as a lion than a hundred as a sheep.

Occhio per occhio, dente per dente.
English translation: An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Più che le parole persuadano gli esempi.
English translation: Actions speak louder than words.

We are the Vengeance of the Blood Angels made manifest. Fear our wrath.

No hymn can be so uplifting as the roar of these guns.

Drink deep of victory and remember the fallen.

Be bloody, bold and resolute.
Este cruenti, audaces et certi.
Motto of the Blood Angels 10th Company.

A huge thanks to Quixus for translating some common quotes and also Brother Captain Kezef for a huge list of Latin/Italiano quotes. And lets not to forget Imperial Deceit for mentioning the idea and starting the ball rolling. His drop pod picture wasn't half bad either.

Philosophiarum et Cogitationes de Verbum

Word philosophies and thoughts of BnC members.

Just about anything in Latin looks nice. - Imperial Deceit

The Codex cover says Sangunius, I think, so creative typos are permissable. - Brother Chris

Grammar is less important then appearance. - Imperial Deceit

Some names I chose just because they sounded cool, others I chose to fit a theme. - DV8

Bear in mind that the BA are a mixture of Latin/angelic and renaissance Italian so some Italian phrases or words could be good substitutes for Latin stuff – Brother Captain Kezef

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to reply and contribute to this project. I hope that this article can help both painters and fluff writers to find that bit of inspiration that they are looking for.

Amazing!! Well done guys!
Gamist, cheesy, beardy or broken; If Games Workshop put it in the book I'll gladly play against it, or with it. - Mort
"Use soft words and hard arguments." (Henry George Bohn [1796-1884].)

There is no harm in, on occasion, having disagreements. It's another thing entirely, however, to be a tool in conveying that disagreement.
