I was thinking perhaps a secret operation by an Inquisitor or two that are trying to create an alternative version to Space Marines though at a lessor cost and a lot more expendable. Sound decent? Conn Eremon Posted June 26, 2014 Author Share Posted June 26, 2014 I'd say go for it (though I'd like to point out that the Inquisition does have a strong presence, it just hasn't been elaborated a lot yet), but I'd give a warning and two pieces of advice: One, those kind of ideas in fandom have a tendency to skirt the edge of marysuedom. If you feel you can keep reasonable distance, then by all means. Second and third, canon instances where such things were attempted shared two things in common: They were very, very secretive and they all ended badly. I'd recommend that your idea keep that in common as well. Edit: And yeah, I feel ya on catching up. I've been following this nonstop, and I still want to convince myself to sit down tonight and start from page one. Any changes? Things like this have been tried before in the canon, if you're looking for inspiration or just knowledge of what's already been done try these three. Also, given the Liber Cluster's remote location and the isolated nature of many of it's less-explored systems it could prove an excellent place to create and field-test such warriors. Conn Eremon Posted June 26, 2014 Author Share Posted June 26, 2014 There is a piece of art, painted by the great Micerotti sometime mid-M37 and kept in stasis above the Liber Cardinal's throne-room aboard the Terminus Crux, of the Liber Cluster and the Emperor. It depicts the galaxy swirling around the Emperor upon his golden throne, the Custodian Guard standing at attention behind his immense shoulders, as he gestures downward with command towards a sister galaxy, greater in size in this artistic representation. This, the Liber Cluster, has an unknown/unmarked Space Marine arising from within it, gesturing upwards with his falx in deference to his liege. Few pieces of art inspire more discussion than this famous piece, such as the fact that the tip of the falx and the Emperor's pointing hand don't quite touch, but seem to be when viewed from the great distance where supplicants are granted the barest glance. The Marine inspires great attention as well. Which Chapter does he hail from? Why is his armor unmarked? What is the significance in the choice of weapon? Though shrouded in mystery, the Unknown Marine nonetheless stands as the standard for which the denizens of the Liber Cluster view the Liberites, and he can be seen in effigies, reprints and other forms on nearly every world. As such, it is not uncommon for Marines of known Chapters to be depicted similarly, including the falx blade even if the Chapter in question has never been known to wield such a weapon, for its symbolic value. Any changes? Y'know, I'm actually in the middle of re-reading the Tanith series for the umpteenth time, and I currently have the Sabbat Crusade book open in front of me right now. (Thus why I think I gravitated to this project in the first place,lol) Gereon-esqe loyalist cells, trying to hold out for the Imperium to return on some of the worst worlds in the Liber Cluster, led (or at least originally formed and trained) by teams of Inquisitors, would be pretty cool. Also with Grey Knights having Naginatas but calling them Halberds ("Nagon... Nagigin...Namina... Screw it, it's a Halberd now") I think we can be a bit lenient. Olis Posted June 27, 2014 Share Posted June 27, 2014 Inquisitorial Faction: The Aleph-Null Directorate Headed by Inquistor Lord Ermin Randahl-Tarantus, the Aleph-Null cell focuses solely upon investigating the Saneslau Mechanicus and it's vassal worlds, forges and holdings. Brought together after Inquistor Randahl-Tarantus investigated and subsequently executed the Saneslau Fabricator Locum for heresy mid-M41, the Directorate is still turning up agents and initiatives from the heretic's doomed enterprise centuries later. With this outside scrutiny interfering with many of the Machine Cult's secret projects in the Liber Cluster, the Directorate has become very much an enemy to many of Saneslau, an enemy that cannot be tolerated. The Inquisitor Lord is nominally in charge of the cell however his authority is often challenged by the other senior member of the group: Inquisitor Brosdau. Both of conflicting philosophies - Randahl-Tarantus is a firm Amalathian while Brosdau is an avowed Recongregator - they follow their own leads and lines of enquiry rather than work together and risk the Directorate altogether. One of the favoured practices of Inquisitor Brosdau is the backing of rebels and recidivists, to incite a populace to overthrow their hereditary overlords or incumbent leaders. Amongst his suspected targets are the hive world of Nabaretti and the forge world Saneslau Secondus. Word has it that Brosdau himself has even employed renegade astartes for his operations, earning him a growing band of critics. It is only a matter of time before he will be brought to task over his questionable methods. That's all I got atm. I'll expand on it later. Thoughts and criticisms welcome. It's probably easier to link to an old thread that outlines the philosophies rather than attempt to go into detail here. Suffice to say the Inquisition is riven by said philosophies and they ensure that one Inquisitor cannot be sure that he implicitly trusts any fellow Inquisitors he meets. In fact, conflicts often occur and it is not uncommon for fellow Inquisitors to kill their peers out of duty, fear or a myriad of other reasons. This sort of division amongst the Inquisition was introduced around the time the Eisenhorn novels came out, with a specialist game called Inquisitor. It used 54mm models (although some players prefer 28mm representations) and, for me, it is infamous for just how game-breakingly powerful an average space marine was (a punch from one could do more damage than a bolt round). Will update this post with the story when I get there. Here it is: Cotem stood at the edge of the marsh looking up at the void through his heavily modified bionics. The sleek lines of his powered armour suggest an alien design. He glanced down and, noticing movement, spoke “Hand me my pulse carbine and arm yourselves, they are coming.” A hulking creature stepped forward and gave the weapon to his lord. Cotem began to shift and distort as he activated an energy field on his belt. “Do not activate the containment field before I give the order, I want to capture as many as possible, and alive. Now activate the bait.” “Affirmative, Lord Cotem,” answered a voice that bore a striking similarity to tearing metal. The being it belonged to became a flurry of motion and light as its bionics activated. All at once a horde of genestealers burst from the swamp at the metallic creature, attracted by the lights and sounds. “Open fire!” shouted Cotem. Projectiles of a dozen different shapes and sizes filled the air alongside blasts of light and heat of a rainbow of different colors as his retinue unloaded their weapons. They left alive only the xenos that were within thirty feet of their original attraction. “Raise the barrier!” The being in the center of the genestealers and protected by an energy field made a few quick motions before a large dome of light went up and around the horde of xenos. Meanwhile his bionics quieted and resumed their places forming an interlocking ball of adamantium around him. Finding it difficult to detect the few biological components left in this strange servant and no longer being attracted by the pheromone release, the genestealers quickly began to tear at their cage. “All of you, build up the containment vessel and let’s leave this rock,” Cotem said with a dark laugh. His servants quickly unburied and lifted up the top half of the containment device around the energy field. They worked quickly, bolting down several layers of armour plate. When they finished Cotem said, “Deactivate the power field. The genestealers will get through it eventually to the bait and we might be able to salvage the power cells. We shouldn’t be wasteful.” The noise of heavy machinery dragging the containment device aboard Cotem’s ship almost drowned out the screams of what used to be a man inside it. Cotem activated the stealth fields and took off. A week later a PDF member on Trinity (a hive world nearby Carver’s world dominated by three huge hive cities) reported a strange occurrence to his superiors. As best as he could describe it, a ships hold suddenly appeared over the rad swamps and dropped a 60 foot wide dome while flying over them. The hold then disappeared. He sounds like a real rogue already - I can see him dolled up to the nines with xenos-tech (which the AdMech would definitely have a heart attack over).
