Big 3d Print Post - Whirlwind Scorpius Major Update

so, I have a large number of 3d print projects in the queue for 40k. I'm going to list them here and link them to the relevant post inside this thread (except for the Sicaran tank, which is already its own thread). I'll update this as frequently as I can, given that I work full time and I'm in college.

As more stuff is added to the queue, I'll add it to the list. Once something on the list has a link, I've started working on it. I think that's an easy way to organize this. I'll also update this post as needed with additional information.

Corvus Hammer -  COMPLETED -  3D Model

Winged Mace - Final design is in beta - 3D Model

Whirlwind Scorpious Turret - Almost complete - 3D Model

Whirlwind Hyperios Turret

BFG Boarding Torpedoes (request)

Sammael Plasma cannon

Fire Raptor

Mek Gunz - Sketching/Brain Storming

Sicaran Battle Tank

Dunestrider

Siege Onager

Okay, so, first up is the Corvus Hammer. I have a wad of bikes that I just purchased and 10 of them are going to be Black Knights. I want to differentiate my hammers from the standard GW faire (otherwise, what's the point?). To this end, I'm basing it off my "angel sword" design from some time ago:

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/277/4/5/angel_sword_2_by_gunmonkey-d5gr3kt.png

In the case of the hammer, I want the wings to form the back, where normally you would have a blunt head. The front will still be a spiked beak, but I'm hoping that the design will mesh with the Ravenwing theme.

A second thing to note is that these will be attached to the bike's armor, so I'll be making a kind of magnetic holder to make them appear to be fastened properly. I may also make a version that can be held in the hand as well, but for now they will all simply be attached the bike in a way that is easily "available" in close combat.

Okay - off to doodling!

Getting very close to being done! I've added more detailing and a power cable to the shaft. The GW version does not have a power cable, but the artwork in the codex shows it similar to a power axe with cable included. At this point I'm going to start figuring out where I want to attach the sprue points. I decided to order some casting stuff, so I can make a single print and then cast them at a greatly reduced cost. I may invest in a better casting setup with my friend at some point in time.

UPDATE - 2/02/2015

Alrighty, it's 100% finished and a test print is ordered. For those curious, here is an interactive 3d  view.

The prints arrived!

The good news is that they seem to print really well. They're detailed and just epic looking. The bad news is that they are too small. This means that both as a weapon and structurally they won't work. The wings break right off the back and they are a tad small for a heroic scale hand. Ironically, they're exactly the perfect size if these were true scale miniatures:

I'll need to adjust the scaling and try again.

UPDATE: 3/21/2015

I fixed the corvus hammer and it's working great. The mace has some durability problems with the wing tips that I'm sorting out:

Alright, the hammer passed it's first print test with advanced geometry. All I need to do now is add additional detailing and do some cleanup. I was mostly concerned about the wings failing the test, but everything looks good so far. The detailing is mostly basic geometry, so shouldn't be too difficult to pass on the first go.

I'll also need to do some optimization, as they currently print at about $5.50 per hammer. A wee bit steep for me.

So where are you gonna print this stuff?

As soon as it's finished. I'm hoping to have the Corvus hammer completed today. I'll be working on it again after breakfast here shortly. It shouldn't take too long.

Hmm, I think you misread my post. I didn't as 'when', but where are you gonna print the things?

Oh, sorry. I typically use Shapeways. They're reasonable and have a really good interface. Moddler is also an option, but they are much more expensive and use the "we'll send you a quote" route.

I'm still whiling away at this. Had a big fire where I work and my eyes are burning a bit now. Still crushed for time, but I've given 2 weeks notice, so I should have plenty of time open up in a couple of weeks to continue working. My friend requested some Mek Gun models and I've done basic sketch work for them.

Also, I increased the size of the corvus hammers and attempted to print again, but this time someone caught them before production and rejected them because of the wings. This means I'll have to completely redesign the winged attachment. Poo.

Oh well. Off to eat and pass out.

Quick edit - here is the sketch:

  • 3 weeks later...

The revised corvus hammers are almost ready to send in for printing. They passed all automated tests, but I want to make a couple of power mauls to go with my order. I now have a chaplain and librarian on bikes, and I figured I'd get their weapons out of the way as well. I'll post some shots of those when I finish them. Shouldn't take long.

Here is the winged mace that I'm going to use as a power maul/Crozius/Force Weapon. I'll get a profile angle on it to.

  • 1 month later...

I updated the maces for durability. I'll be ordering a set here shortly to see how they turned out, but I more than doubled the thickness so all should be well.

I also added a link to my signature for those interested in getting my design for their own armies. Any specific questions or feed back can be PM'ed to me. General design questions are fine here. Also, shapeways has a beta feature, so when my design is ready for public consumption, I'll release it as beta until I'm confident there will be no problems.

Next in the pipe is a scorpius turret. Still sketching designs for it though.

Started on the whirlwind scorpius turret design. This will utilize the current rhino chassis and mirror the latest space marine vehicle design philosophy instead of the heresy era stuff. I may also make some extra Dark Angel specific parts for it.

UPDATE:

The turret is done for the most part. I have a few areas to fix that are too thin to print. However, the cost is way higher than I thought it would be, so I'm going to consider ways to make it cheaper to print. This also happens to be my very first multi-part kit and vehicle kit! I think it turned out alright. I feel the rear of the turret should have angled inwards though, and it looks longer that it really is when viewed from the top.

I also changed the overall design and reduced the height of the turret:

Nice work there but the staff reminds me of the magic staff from Card Captor Sakura

http://blog.jemolian.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/sakurasyaoranagain1024uz1.png

Don't see the similarity. It's a basic geometric shape that mimics a beak.

The beak and wings on the back

I'm not mentioning this form a legal stand point just that it reminds me of the anime.

I know.

And I made a major update to the whirlwind scorpius turret.
