My Newbie Blood Angel Hobby Blog

Hi guys. As you can see by the title, Im a newbie to the hobby. If you read my introduction in the other post I made you know that Im more or less in ths for the hobby portion more than the gaming aspect because there is no one that plays anywhere near me. Closest Games Workshop is an hour and a half away and there are no places to play anywhere close so Im basically doing this for fun. Of course IF I were to find someone else who played close by I want to be ready to play to. This blog will be something I update periodically to show my progress of how my Blood Angels are coming along through the eyes of a newbie. Ive been collecting models and assembling them for only two months now but I have a decent amount of models to work with for awhile. I have some base coated and some are merely primed awaiting attention.

I will admit that when it comes to painting, I have yet to complete a single model. Im intimidated by my lack of skill and I thought that maybe if I had an audience I could push myself to do better and learn from your suggestions. So, let me list what models I have as of right now and I will also post a picture of what I have assembled.

2 Space Marine Tactical Squads (Converted and painted to be Blood Angels)

2 Blood Angel Tactical Squads (1 Assembled somewhat and 1 brand new. The partially assembled one was assembled but taken back apart to fix or rearrange thngs better)

2 Death Company Squads (1 partially assembled and 1 brand new)

2 Space Marine Assault Squads (Both new)

1 Sanguinary Guard Squad

1 Space Marine Command Squad (Partially Assembled)

1 Space Marine Terminator Squad (Almost complete. Heads like gluing.)

1 Blood Angel Furioso Dreadnaught (New and Im undecided on how to build it...)

Once I figure out how to post pictures I will post some.....

My Blood Angels

Ok. Got that figured out so heres a picture of part of the Blood Angels I have. I like a little bit of magnetizing to go but for the most part these guys are just waiting on more detailed attention. I will try to post some progress at least once a day so check back and let me know what you guys think or post your suggestions.

I know it's easy to say, but try not to be intimidated. I have suffered from this and it has taken me over eighteen years to paint certain models because I couldn't help feeling that I wouldn't do them justice. The silly thing is that when I finally got around to painting them, they have been an absolute joy to do and I honestly couldn't understand why I hadn't done them sooner. It's an old cliche but practice does in deed make perfect and even if you do mess it up, these days it is so easy to strip models and do them again that it's really not worth worrying over.

As for motivation, have a read of this. Basically, an inter-fora painting challenge will begin on the 1st May and it is renowned for helping people begin an assault on their collections. Consider it as Faction: BA will gladly accept your help :)

You did right starting this thread smile.png I was in a similar position recently, unable to get games in for a while, and found this forum and the ETL painting competition helped me keep going and get a lot of stuff done.

You have enough power armour there for a solid list, and list-building is a massive part of the hobby not to mention coming in handy for when you do finally get a game. Any form of transport for your tacs would be great, and drop pods might be best for your assault squads. What kind of heavy / special weaponry do you prefer?

As I told the last guy, Sanguinary guard are a waste of time. All they are are Tactical marines with extra flashy bits, and an extra attack.

Ive heard that about them. They were one of the first models I got. I bought two and it was one of them because it was one of the cheaper sets. LOL. Im going to paint them but if I ever play I probably wouldnt use them. They look cool though and I already have the paint so Ill eventually paint them up.

Im using the Heavy Flamer on the new set of Tacts I got as the other has the Heavy Bolter. I plan on getting some transports of some kind soon. Right now I gotta paint and assemble what I have gathered up before I can justify buying anything esle. lol. I recently ran into a stressful situation that caused me to lose a good deal of sleep and I just havent been able to get myself awake and feeling like painting much todlay. Im gonna force myself to get around in a little bit to try and get something done. I will post pics as soon as I accomplish whatever I do. LOL

Oh and thanks for the encouragement everyone! I really hope that I can get good at this as I enjoy putting them together and planning out what I want to use with them. Its kinda like and RPG on the PC and I love RPGs and doing the weapons and armor on them. You would think that I wouldnt be so intimidated by a little model thats about an inch tall when I used to paint cars and repair them for a living. I guess its because I want to be good at it and you have to be really detailed on the minis or something. I dont understand it myself. LOL

UPDATE: No pics as I didnt get much done. I did manage to make myself get around and get a little bit done. I managed to paint a little on my Command Squads Company Champion that I had base coated in Mephiston Red. I painted the helmet in Gehenna's Gold along with the shoulder pads and the laurels on the shield and his base coated the loin cloth in I think it was Zandri Dust. I attempted to paint the eagle symbol on a a test subjects chest but my shaky hands just didnt let me get it like I had planned when I tried to highlight on it with a lighter color. Gonna have to work on that somehow so if any of you have any suggestions please share the with me. Ive tried propping my arms, propping my hands where my palms touch and some other stuff but I still shake. Im shaky anyways but especially when I attempt to do detail painting like that.

My two only bits of advice which really helped me would be get yourself some nice brushes I use the winsor and newton series 7 brushes I highly recommend them. If your not in a rush to use your minis then maybe think about painting up the bodys without the arms fitted. For the detail stuff have you tried dry brushing them? If you look on tinterweb there's plenty of tutorials to help you in getting the best out of this hobby. Welcome to the forum it's an awesome place full of top lads who are more than willing to help, look forward to seeing your updates.

Looking good.

The only problem I see is that you have both an Assault Cannon and a Cyclone Missile Launcher on your Terminator Squad.  On a five-man squad, you can have one or the other but not both.

They are magnetized so I can swap them around if I have to. I have nearly all my assembled minis magnetized for customization

I havent painted anything today. I havent felt well at all and I had some outside work to do. I found an Airbrush Compressor and cleaned it up so tomorrow Im going to Hobby Lobby and picking up a gravity fed airbrush. Ive been looking at the Iwata Neo. Once I use my 40% discount it wont cost  much and I can pick up some vallejo paint while Im there.

Went to Hobby Lobby this morning and bought a airbrush. I got a NEO for Iwata. That was this morning. Im just getting home from running around trying to find a fitting that would connect the air hose to my compressor since I got the WRONG air hose at Hobby Lobby. LOL. Once I use it and get something done or mess up I will post more.

Long time no post. I have accomplished absolutely nothing. Between real life and disgust in my lack of skill I just cant get anything done at the moment. I have attempted to finish at least one guy and done some different techniques on a few but I just cant seem to find the right proccess for me to get with and satisfy myself. My compressor has been a pain as the air pressure switch was broken when I found it (Its an old one that was bought years ago but works) and I thought i had it fixed. Nope. I either gotta get the thing repaired or find another way to fix it. As I said Ive tried tutorials and watched every video I can find but nothing is working for me. Drybrushing I cant seem to get and the washing (GW Shades) I cant seem to get to look right. Ive just gotten frustrated with the whole thing. LOL. Im gonna try to get something painted no matter what today.

  • 2 weeks later...

I plan on showing some pictures here real soon. Ive been doing a little painting here and there on some test models and Im finally getting a little more comfortable with myself and learning a few techniques now that I have the family reunion behind me. I tinkered around with my Airbrush and Compressor and have them running good now so Im about to try to get some base coats on the rest of my Terminators in a few minutes so I can begin on those. I done a little highlighting work on my test Terminator and figured a few things out so Im planning on having some sort of progress picture up after while sometime come Hades or high water as my grandmother used to say. LOL. Anywho, hope to hear from you all and I plan on keeping the updates more frequent as I get more and more done. See ya soon!

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I ordered some stuff that will hopefully make things a bit easier on me that should be here soon. I plan on putting my Citadel paints in eye dropper bottles to cut back on the wasted paint somewhat. I realize I will waste a little during the transfer but I don't think it will be anymore than what I currently waste through normal usage considering how the pots do with paint in the lids and drying out. I have 50 15ml bottles coming and 500(bulks cheaper) pipettes to use to transfer the paint to the bottles and to my airbrush. I also ordered a W&N series 7 paintbrush and a few other things to try. Somehow I wind up buying stuff when what I need to do is finish some models! Lol. I still have 1 SM tactical squad, 1 Blood Angel tactical squad, Furioso Dread, Death Company and even Ork Nobs and Killa Kanz still on sprues I need to assemble. Lmao. Plastic crack at it's finest! Lol
