Cheaper Alternatives to Mk2

Recommended Posts

My new Dusk Raiders army is set in the early days of the Crusade, which means Marks II and III galore. I got Mark III covered, but currently a single squad of Mk2 Armor will set me back £50. Having moved house, I can't justify that price. Any ideas for alternatives?

Get really good at sculpting?

Not trying to be flippant, I'm just not aware of anything out there that looks like official mk. II and most of the 3rd party not- space marine bits makers aren't necessarily cheaper even if they did offer what you want.

Hmm, you could perhaps try to convert regular Mk7, and/or Mk3 (or a combination).

> Mk7 conversions are just time-consuming, and require some practice/skill/patience

> Mk3 conversions also require effort like the Mk7, but you do start with some Mk2 features already which may help.

The thing about Mk3 is that it's really like Mk2 with extra armour plates to the front of the model (compare the two armour marks side-by-side to see what I mean). If you're handy with a knife and file, you should be able to remove these and carve back to a Mk2 suit. You can also use a carved and sculpted Mk7 torso with carved Mk3 limbs/head/backpack.

The Mk7 conversions are more work in terms of sculpting, but can potentially be faster with practice as there is less carving to do.

(I also recommend doing a Google search for Mk2 conversions - I've seen plenty of tutorials for these things floating around!).

Perhaps focus on other projects for the time being and wait to see if GW release a new boxset with plastic MkII? Give they've already done MkIII and MkIV, it seems not unlikely that they'll do another box set, given how popular the previous two have been.

As Jolemai has suggested, the kromlech legs have a similar look to mkII with the segmented plates. Regarding the torso, anvil industries has a couple lf torsos that could be used as mkII: the medieval and the praetorian torsos (the latter might need a bit of conversion, like fusing the two top segments to make the pectoral plate larger). Regarding arms, I haven't really looked to much, but if I recall correctly chaos space marines have similar arms to mkII, and you could also get some anvilus pattern backpacks (otherwise, the mkII and III patterns share the same backpack, so getting hold of plastic ones shouldn't be too expensive). On helmets I don't remember any similar alternatives right now, but they're probably the bits where you have more freedom to use any option you fancy, or maybe you could get a helmet set from FW (expensive, but at least not the price of a full mkII squad).

Thanks I think I'll check out those legs, convert the Torso from Mk7, and use backpacks/heads/arms/shoulder pads from Mark 3

Obviously personal preference will vary, but Kromlech only have the one leg style that seems comparable to Mk. II (bottom left in the below picture) and you only get 2 of it per pack of 6 legs

While they're probably the closest on the market, they don't seem that similar

I'd say they still look like older mark legs and they've got a lot of variety (running and crouch variants inaddition to the above and bionic versions of all 3). It just depends on how wedded you are to the 'official' aesthetic and I'm not sure of it's cheaper since it's 7.99 Eros for 6.

Yeah, mix-and-matching kits and third party bits will probably end as/more expensive as the official kits... And there is little wiggle-room, as the RRP of a plastic Mk3 marine is £3, and the RRP of a FW Mk2 marine is £5. sad.png

Of course, third parties sell the plastic Mk3 at discounted prices, and you also get a lot of weapons and such (which are missing from the FW kits, and have to be bought separately at extra cost).

They only "cheap" method is therefore to buy one cheaper kit, and resculpt/convert it with stuff you already have. And even then, the time/effort taken may not be worth your while.

It's also worth noting that some companies like MaxMini will do you a set of just one or two parts rather than a one-of-each set if you email them and ask. Other companies may therefore do the same, so it's worth emailing them if you do find something you like and that's in budget.

Cheapest solution? Use the mkiii set as a base (very cheap on ebay).

Carve the torsos up using the rear as a guide for where the layers should be.

A scalpel, needle file and emery board are your friends here, and you may not even need to sculpt...

For the little circle plate on top of the groin? Use a revolving hole punch (about £3 on eBay) and plasticard.

I'd still go with the chaos space marine arms, but again, these are very cheap on ebay.

The legs are where I see the biggest issues arising. There are nice guides for the segments thanks to the rear armour, but it's a very small area to get a file or scalpel in to work.

Total cost of about £20 for ten if you don't mind hacking up the legs.

If you don't want to use those legs, sell them for a few quid, and Invest in the kromlech legionary legs.
