Been a while, but with my new duties of responsibility in the LIBER I have some new additions for the Gallery (heraldries have been posted by me in the threads very recently if you wish to nab them). biggrin.png

  1. The Depthwatch from Messor
  2. Dusk Falcons (the old colour scheme is one of mine and can be removed or renamed to Dusk Hawks) from Timberley

There'll be more once I see a few more colour schemes to add symbols to. biggrin.png

It seems the Depthwatch URL links to the Dusk Falcon's armour?

Do you need help figuring it out the codes?

I was a bit confused that the post didn't look anything like the template, considering it originated from there...yes, help would be great.

First you need the BB Code guide: http://www.bolterand...1-bbcode-guide/

This gives you all the tools you need. for example;

Basic header text in a black box

You can find the above code by hit quote, or use copy and past this for each header in your IA;

[basicheader=000]Basic header text in a black box[/basicheader]

If you are not comfortable with code, I can go into more detail?

Hello all,

I'm going to separate out the 1000 chapter gallery from my main website, put it onto another separate website dedicated to the gallery, and update the gallery software. While I'm working through the links, I notice a few DIY chapters have disappeared from the web!

Edit [2020-01-19] For example, in the first 900 checked and the following are changing from DIY to MIA. A blood bath for the Imperium!

  • angles of hate
  • angels of remission
  • annihilators
  • archons of vaan
  • astral ravens
  • aurora knights
  • avenging lions
  • azure talons
  • bane knights
  • bane marines
  • battle griffons
  • black anvils
  • black gorgons
  • black panthers
  • black pharaohs
  • blades of deliverance
  • blades of duty
  • blood seekers
  • brethren of quirinus
  • bronze templars
  • brotherhood of baal
  • brothers of karnos
  • brothers sempiternus
  • burning blades
  • calibanite lions
  • constrictors
  • crimson guardians
  • crimson justicars
  • crimson kestrels
  • crimson templars
  • dark scorpions
  • death jackals
  • delphic order
  • devestation angels
  • divine death
  • dragons of gaea
  • echidna bane
  • emerald knights
  • empyrean dragons
  • falcon brothers
  • falcon warriors

  • pegasus guard
  • phoenix knights
  • pious templars

  • praefects of heliophon
  • praetorian fists
  • priory of dorn
  • prodigal sons
  • punishing angels
  • purified ravens
  • quantum chevrons
  • quark hunters
  • radiant flight
  • red rams
  • red scars
  • ring guard
  • screaming spears
  • shadow dragons
  • shadow lords
  • shadow reapers
  • silver scorpions
  • silver serpents
  • sons of alba
  • sons of mars
  • spectres of war
  • star foxes
  • star knights

I tried to recover them from Internet Archive., but no dice. They are gone. One was hosted on google's Picasa service which google retired. So even big hosts are not safe.

I suspect there are a lot more that have disappeared, and as time goes on, even more, will disappear. Ideas lost forever. I also wondered about B&C or Lexicanum disappearing!

How should I protect against this loss?

At first, I thought I'd used the internet archive (wayback machine) and grab them all before they disappear. However, that takes away the direct links to B&C and Lexicanum, which drives a little traffic to support them. Also, the wayback machine is also very slow, see how long this link fires up for you: Accipiters.

Should I use continue to use the live links to B&C and Lexicanum, and make a corresponding backup text list of all the chapters' wayback machine snapshots, and make sure there are snapshots of all chapter pages in the wayback machine?

Or should I swap to the wayback machine now, as I do not know when a links will break?

I think I'll have to create a backup list either way, after all, one day the way back machine will disappear. Perhaps I should get a hard drive and download everything and back it up locally on my machine, and if everything goes down, I can post it all on my website?

What are your thoughts?

I think that no matter what, if you want to preserve as many of the DIYs as possible, you’re going to have to have some sort of backup repository, preferably something with multiple redundancies. I don’t think that any online system will be 100% safe, not even the B&C and Lexicanum.

Before I go into detail about my ideas, I think that those Chapters whose information has been lost to the Warp (e.g., the Angels of Hate, the Angels of Remission, etc.) should be codified as apocryphal. By separating all such “lost” Chapters out, though, you can reduce the main database to just those for which there is active information. Your database already exceeds the “about 1,000 Chapters” number that GW has identified (even after the Ultima Founding, which seems odd). I’m not sure how many Chapters in the database no longer have active information, but putting all of those in reserve will open up some slots for additional Chapters. You’ll still have the basic information on each of these “apocryphal” Chapters, so they won’t be totally gone; and if you ever recover information on any of these, you can always put them back into the main database.

A problem I’ve found here at the B&C that follows the problem you’ve found at your site is that hobbyists’ images are often lost to the Warp. This can happen for any number of reasons: image hosting sites defunct, hobbyists forget that the images are used in articles and delete the images from their accounts, image hosting sites block hot-linking, etc. So any functional repository method is going to require that you also back up the images.

If memory serves me correctly, your current requirements are for a name and color scheme along with some background information (I don’t believe that you’ve defined a format or word count for that background information). Those requirements seem fair to me. One gap in those requirements, though, is that the articles remain external to your site and are, therefore, susceptible to loss, as you’ve cited. One possibility is to create some mechanism whereby in addition to the current method, you create some way for hobbyists to optionally submit a file to you. Such a file would ostensibly be nothing more than a copy of their article that you can preserve in case their current site ever disappears. You might even change the format for your site so that multiple links are possible.

You’re going to have to balance that with ease of entry, though. You don’t want submission requirements to be so work-intensive that hobbyists don’t want to take the time to meet those requirements. While some hobbyists are willing to invest considerable time and effort in developing their DIY (e.g., Commissar Molotov and his Castigators), many others are satisfied the bare minimum of a color scheme, badge, and name. In addition, you don’t want to have overly restrictive requirements that limit hobbyists’ creativity. Many hobbyists like the Index Astartes format (and for good reason), but many others develop background information or DIY presentation along different lines.

Another possibility is that volunteers here at the B&C might work in concert with your effort, codifying hobbyists’ DIYs here. If we still had the Librarium (or if we, Emperor Willing, ever get it back), we could use that as our repository. Lacking the Librarium functionality, though, we might create the typical discussions showing hobbyists’ articles; or we might create them as downloads. This might even be something that we can bastardize a discussion forum into a quasi-Librarium solely for finished DIYs (leaving the current Liber forums as workplaces). We would have to explore the limitations of such a concept. In either case, we would have to be clear in crediting the actual authors (and wouldn’t create articles/files for those that refuse to give permission).

At a minimum, I think you’ll need a file and some web page, both with duplicate information. The web page would be your primary link, with the file (and potentially other web pages) serving as redundancy. The file might be nothing more than a text document along with whatever images the article might need; or it might be a fully realized article that includes the images. For example (and tooting my own horn), my Nova Hawks (which are due for an update, thank you Dark Millennium) currently have a level of redundancy. The primary article can be seen here. This is a graphic-based article. To help those that don’t want to read a bandwidth-intensive graphic-based article, I’ve posted a text-based version here. In addition, I’ve posted the actual file (from which the graphic-based version was created) here. Members can download and read that version, which is a .pdf file. For your purposes, a minimum level of redundancy is that you can download the .pdf and preserve it in your repository so that you won’t lose the Nova Hawks if the B&C ever goes away.

Some tools that you are welcome to link to or copy and promulgate for your own use:You might also check out Downloads: An Alternative to the Librarium.

There might also be some overlap with the various tabula listings. I’m also reminded of the original Liber Astartes site, which was Kurgan the Lurker’s website archiving all of the official and DIY Chapters and warbands.

Note that I see two different lines of effort here. The first is your repository. The second is a B&C effort. The first, naturally, is completely up to you (what you do, how you do it, etc.). The second is a parallel and complementary effort that might be conducted at the B&C. Each effort can be conducted independently to decent effect. The ideal in my mind, though, is that both efforts might be performed in conjunction with each other, providing a double layer of redundancy.

Thank you Brother Tyler,

At the moment, as I'm transferring to the new site, I'm creating backups of all working links using the wayback machine. I'm also going to take your advice, and I'll create a local backup by downloading all the pages. This way I can re-create pages if Lex or B&C come to an end.

I cannot stand the idea of all these ideas disappearing. It reminds me of the ol' Anargo sector project, and when that disappeared so many good ideas went with it. All that is left is the original proboard forum, which has a wealth of information, but one day even that will disappear sad.png

I would welcome the opportunity to further collaborate with B&C, as B&C is the core source of the DIY chapters. I love the idea of a more permanent IA section, where chapters have to be approved by members of B&C, our very own Chapter Approved.

Using the downloads sounds interesting. You'd end up with hundreds of IA, and that might drown out the other content so we'll need a new category: "DIY Index Astartes" or some such.

So, we'll end up with an IA section, our 'Chapter Approved', showing off the chapters in the standard B&C format, which has a link to the PDF download section.

I've added the resource links you supplied to the first page of this thread, under DIY submissions, and I'll add them to the new home page too thumbsup.gif
