CDVIII Cohort

SUMMARY
+ GENE-SEED: IVth Legion
+ CHAPTER MASTER: Warsmith Minos, The Bull of Korinthos, The Mollosiac
+ FLAGSHIP: The Anaideia – Battle Barge
+ MAIN COLOURS: Iron, Gold and Black
+ SPECIALITY: Garrison defence, Zone Mortalis
+ BATTLE CRY: Iron Within! Iron Without!
+ CURRENT STRENGTH: 280 Legionaries, by the start of the Horus Heresy.
+ ALLEGIANCE: Loyal to Perturabo and the IVth Legion

ORIGIN OF THE CHAPTER:
The CDVIII Cohort were born in the recruiting grounds of Korinthos on Olympia upon the finding of the Lord of Iron. Almost immediately after their founding they were tested and bloodied upon the anvil of war at the forefront of the IVth Legion forces during the campaigns of compliance against the Black Judges. The Cohort showed a talent that would be seen among more veteran companies within the Legion, especially in close quarters fighting including ship boarding and trench clearance. As well as close fighting, they showed an above average performance in defending strongpoints within a garrison or recently gained position. This did not go unnoticed among the command of the IVth Legion and Perturabo himself, and after the compliance and destruction of the Black Judges, they were assigned to the 58th Grand Battalion and sent to the Segmentum Ultima’s Northern and North Eastern fringe. To claim and garrison the borders of the Imperium.

The Cohort under the Warsmith Minos, at this time 500 strong, garrisoned the world of Agèma where they stood vigilant until 005.M31 when the Horus Heresy started its blaze across the Galaxy.

Upon their stay on Agèma the Cohort merged the native steeds used by the previous rulers of the planet into their heraldry. Although looked down upon by the Legion as unnecessary, the Brown Warhorse took its place upon Cohort Banners under the Grim Iron Mask of the Iron Warriors. Along with this, the favoured Purple dyes of the planets populace started to appear in the flourishes of the Legion.

PRESENT ACTIVITIES:
As the Horus Heresy began, the Cohort, a fraction of their number, diminished dramatically through more than 30 years of bloody sieges from a Xenos race known as the Xeribysz, was ordered to abandon their garrison and muster before the Isstvan system to join the Primarch and the bulk of the Legion for the Warmasters cause. They demolished the planets abandoned munitions depots from orbit, deployed enough chemicals to leave the planet inhospitable to all life but Legiones Astartes and headed to the meeting point. 280 Legionaries remained from the Cohort, their brother Cohorts assigned with them wiped out or reassigned to other systems and other battalions, the 408th were all that was left of the 58th Grand Battalion.

When the word was given to deploy and secure upon the planet, the 408th accepted their Primarch word without question and joined their brothers on the walls of the plateau upon Isstvan V.

COMBAT DOCTRINE:
The Company fights exactly as the Iron Warriors have done since their reformation upon the finding of Perturabo, slow, forceful, and relentless. Due to the planet that they were assigned which was mostly covered in forest, mountainous terrain and miles of razorthorn bushes, The Cohort made a use of a large amount of Reconnaissance Squads. However after abandoning Agèma they reverted to the units that best served their way of warfare, Breacher squads, Tactical squads and Destroyer squads. Ideal for Garrison duty and Zone Mortalis. It is also of note that the Legion has a detachment of Tyrant Siege Terminators, led by the Tyrant Siege Master, Veteran Sergeant Eudoxos.

The Cohort is unusual in the fact that it has very little siege equipment and heavy tanks, usually relying on other Cohorts to break and tear down the walls of the enemy.

ROLL OF HONOR:
- The Compliance of Agèma (890.M30)
The Compliance was conducted by the 58th Grand Battalion, who under the command of Warsmith Minos conducted a vicious and bloody assault to subdue human resistance on the planet who refused to join the Imperium. As the Fleet arrived in system, they were almost instantly under attack by the outer planet gun batteries and ragtag ships. Minos immediately contacted the forces assaulting them believing they were imperial forces due to the similarities of defence systems, organised a ceasefire and demanded that the humans submit to the rule of the Imperium and the Emperor. Outright refusing and going so far as to insult the Warsmith, the System ruler cut all ties and pushed to attack the Iron Warriors once again. Minos did not give them any time to manoeuvre. He commanded that the fleet, numbering 20 vessels obliterate every ship in the System, then blockade the planet and prepare for bombardment. Within three weeks of horrendous naval battles and numerous ship boarding’s, the 20 strong fleet had lost 9 vessels, one of which was a Legion strike cruiser, and completely scoured the system of any spacefaring craft, the Bombardment then began. Flattening a landing position, the 58th Battalion landed 3 Cohorts, and many Regiments of Solar Auxilia on the outer reaches of the Planets capital, Pyrgos and began to start the siege, which would lead to the eventual defeat and end of the Tyrant of Agèma. The siege was relatively bloodless, having flattened the walls, sectors and palace of Pyrgos, the Tyrant Kel’ardors had died 33 days into the siege leading a charge of 10,000 men on their Giant Warhorses to counter attack the besiegers. The remaining forces leaderless and in despair that the gambit failed, pleaded for their surrender, however Minos, still fuming from the disrespect shown to him and his warriors ignored their calls completely. On the 79th day, the final wall was torn down and the extermination of Pyrgos began.

- The Second Siege of Pyrgos (967.M30)
A Xenos race from unknown space named Xeribysz assault the planet of Agèma. The 58th Battalion who planned for the eventuality of a siege, were caught unaware when the Armies of Xenos deployed en mass through pounding showers of meteorites made of an unknown material. Due to the superior defensive capabilities and tried and tested methods the Iron Warriors applied over countless sieges, the 58th Battalion were able to successfully defend the planet against the horde of Xenos. However taking massive casualties, the CXV Cohort was completely wiped out after self-destructing their garrison after being overwhelmed at the very start of the siege.

- The Third Siege of Pyrgos (971.M30)

Two years after the invasion of Agèma, the 58th Battalion once again came under attack by the Xeribysz Xenos species. Sensing the Vanguard’s destruction, The entirety of the Xeribysz moved in to destroy and hope to carve a path into the Imperium of Man. However Warsmith Minos, believing that the Xenos would return tightened the security in the system, and moved to turn the planet into a world of Iron brimmed with fortifications and defences. Having defended the planet with serious losses the previous siege, the Warsmith moved to form planetary forces from the subjugated population under the supervision of Solar Auxilia command to help defend against the arrival of the new fleet. The 58th Grand Company fought through a bloody 30 year siege until an order from Perturabo was received demanding all Iron Warriors forces available converge with his fleet to join the attack on the Forces on Isstvan V

CHAPTER ORGANIZATION:
The 408th follow the standard Iron Warriors Organization laid out by Perturabo upon his reforging of the Legion.

The Current Colour scheme of the Iron Warriors 408th Company.

FLEET ASSETS:
By the Time the Legion had started to converge on the Isstvan system, the 408th Cohort consisted of three ships.

+ The Anaideia – The 58th Grand Battalion Flagship and the ship of Warsmith Minos. A Battle Barge forged on Olympia, the Anaideia was presented to the Wasmith upon his deployment to the Northern Fringes.

+ Spear of Olympia – Strike Cruiser class

+ Siegebreaker – Strike Cruiser class

BELIEFS:
The 408th Believe in the superiority of the Legiones Astartes over all, and the Iron Warriors being the strongest and greatest of the Brotherhood. When the Iron Warriors enslaved Olympia and destroyed their oaths to the Emperor, the Cohort solidified their faith in the Primarch as the true ruler of the IVth Legion and a liberator of the Legion from the chains of thankless and pointless warfare.

RECRUITMENT:

-Will fill this in later-

LOCAL RITUALS:
The Iron Warriors Vehemently despise Rituals and superstitions.

Okay, here it goes. I decided to do just a general outline from the point of view of the early Scouring. This is just meant to convey general information as I want to reserve the main chunk for a story-driven narrative. There might be some continuity error's for that reason, but I hope this didn't end up too horrible. Enjoy smile.png

Emperor's Children

The true sons of the IIIrd Legion

SUMMARY
GENE-SEED: IIIrd Legion
CHAPTER MASTER: Lord Commander Eualcides
MAIN COLOURS: Imperial Purple, Gold, White
SPECIALITY: Combined Arms Warfare; Deployment alongside regular Imperial forces
BATTLE CRY: "Glory to the 3rd Legion" "Honour and Duty!"
CURRENT STRENGTH: UNKNOWN
ALLEGIANCE: Loyal to the Emperor and Mankind

ORIGIN OF THE CHAPTER:
The Chapter formed itself out of the remains of the loyalists of 3rd Legion that could be intercepted prior to the battle at Istvaan III. The story starts with an unnamed Lord Commander who would later become known simply as the Vengeful Son and a several companies of the 3rd Legion operating too remote from Istvaan III were sent on what seemed to be a mission to cull some rebellious forces. This turned out of be a trap as they were fed false information, which resulted in the fleet suffering greatly at the hand of a prepared army of rebels and pirates. However, the skill and and determination of the Emperor's Children managed to prevail over strategic superiority and a phyric victory could be achieved.

On their way back to report of the outcome of this battle, the remains of the fleet received an encrpyted transmission, which revealed the plans of what was going to happen at Istvaan III and details about the suicide mission. There have been many whispers and doubts that something was corrupting the Legion from within and this transmission only added fuel to the fire. It is not known to this day who sent it, but most agree that it was not of an Imperial or even a human force.

Determined to find out the truth about what was happening, the remainer of fleet made their way to Istvaan at full speed. When they were getting closer, a transmission was intercepted that demanded all Companies of the IIIrd, XIVth and XVIth Legion to converge at Istvaan III and communication could with Istvaan III itself could not be established. The operation that the warning detailed seemed to have begun and their worst fear had been validated.

Without delay, the remaining commanders made a plan to intercept any ship going that way, even against their will if need be. So began the operation simply known as The Rescue. The remaining ships of the fleet split up in smaller groups to contact any other ships on the way to Istvaan III. Some even needed to be stopped by force by blocking commications and disabling the ship engines. Although they could not reach many, a good number of Astartes were intercepted and warned about the situation.

After they rescued as many Legionaries as possible, the main part of the fleet left for Terra to report the news while a small part hung back to rescue stragglers and potentially enter the Istvaan system to salvage and search for survivors. Unfortunately, some of those ships were spotted and shot down by traitor forces.

Upon arrival on Terra, the slaughter of Istvaan III was already known, told by survivors who managed to escape the battle on a vessel called the Eisenstein.

Little is known what happened behind the walls of the Imperial Palace. The only thing known is that the story of the loyalists of the 3rd Legion was reviewed and cross-referenced until it has been deemed true and the loyalists have been cleared of suspicion and granted autonomy by Imperial decree.

Towards the end of the Horus Heresy, a number of ships visited Istvaan III in search of survivors and wargear. What they found were the bodies of those who made their valiant last stand. After this point the acting Lord Commander handed the duty over to his second in command Eualcides and set out on his own. Only new Lord Commander knew of his whereabout, but he kept quiet at the request of his former mentor.

As such the Chapter was formed out of the orphans of the IIIrd Legion, rising from the ashes like a Phoenix, renewed in strength and purpose, to bring retribution to those who have sinned and bring peace to those who were betrayed.

PRESENT ACTIVITIES:
At the present time, the Chapter is largely occupied with hunting down traitor forces and salvaging equipment as well as engines of war to make up for their own losses at the hand of their own brethren. Although this act of retribution is aimed at all traitors, the Chapter is always on the look-out for traitor elements of the former 3rd Legion to still those fires of vengeance and grant their brothers who were felled by traitor's hand the peace they deserve.

COMBAT DOCTRINE:

Due to the highly fluid nature of its organization, the Chapter prides itself in being able to adapt to most scenarios. However, the most common tactic is a combined arms approach of advancing forces supported by rapid deployment elements to ultimately surround the enemy and deliver a coup the grace with an elite combat unit. As such, Infantry and Dreadnoughts are often used in conjunction with Jetbikes and Land Speeders of various types. Deployment usually happens by way of flyers such as Storm Eagles and Storm Birds as well as Dreadclaws and Drop Pod for rapid incersion forces.

In order to be able to participate in battles more frequently and more efficiently, the Chapter often supports larger forces of the Imperium, mostly with the Militia or the Solar Auxilia and later the Imperial Guard, often supporting decision-making or something taking theatre control and leading the soldiers into battle from the front lines. Though in the early days they mainly supported existing operations as many where still distrustful of the remnants of the 3rd Legion, later they moved on to incorporating the Imperial Army into the battle plans. This practice was developed to a point where the Chapter started to support an own selection of Imperial Army soldiers serving alongside the Astartes.

ROLL OF HONOR:

The Rescue 005.M31

The famous operation that led to the creation of this Chapter. A surviving force of loyalist Emperor's Children who miraculously survived what turned out to be a suicide mission received a warning about the imminent massacre at Istvaan III and the betrayal. Determined to rescue as many loyal brothers as possible, the remaining ships split up into small task forces to intercept any vessels on their way to Istvaan III. What resulted was a big chase to warn other loyalist forces and multiple skirmishes against traitors. Many ships needed to be stopped by force seeing as no Legionary would willingly ignore an order from his own Primarch and as such communications needed to be disrupted the the ships' engines disabled.

The surviving forces then made their way to Terra to report of this atrocity. Although this operation was very minor compared to many battles during the Horus Heresy, it played a big part in the history of this Chapter as it marks their very origin.

Cullting of Attican Prime 016.M31

A major engagement that happened during the early year of the Great Scouring saw one of the first major victories of the Chapter over the forces of Chaos. A renegade Warband of the Emperor's Children were located on a remote planet with a staggering number of traitor Imperial Army soldiers establishing a foothold. The entire Chapter Fleet and supporting elements immediately rallied in a nearby system to counter this threat. Lord Commander Eualcides himself led the attack. The fleet entered orbit with a surprising speed and started a massive orbital assault. Vanguard forces cleared multiple landing zones and allowed the main forces to land and establish a foothold on the planet. What followed then was a relentless hunt. Highly mobile elements were deployed and executed the Maru Skara strategy in encircle and crush any traitor forces. Infantry was deployed in slow altitude flying transports, which were supported by fighters of the Imperial Navy as well as Land Speeders and Jetbikes on the ground and Drop Pods as well as Dreadclaws from orbit. The fight was long and bloody, but the superior organization and speed of the loyalist forces managed to achieve a decisive victory mainly by virtue of having the element of surprise on their side.

After the battle the planet was throrough scoured and cleansed and the Chapter established one of its first orbital outposts that were used to scout the surrounding areas and report any hostile activities to the nearest Imperial fleet and the Chapter itself.

Retribution at the Pylos Nebula 021.M31
This naval battle took place at the end of the Scouring where a major part of the Chapter Fleet, supported by a few vessel of other loyalist Chapters and an Imperial Navy turned an ambush into a major victory. The traitors were sending false signals to lure loyalist fleets into a trap for a short while now, using the Pylos Nebula as a cover for their operations. This area was under suspicion for quite a while now and a task force was been assembled to tackle the raids. The Chapter managed to turn their own predicament to an advantage where they approached the Nebula in the guise of fellow traitor Legionaries, feeding the lurking Imperial fleet with the location. When the truth came out, it was too late for the traitor forces as the Imperial Navy engaged the traitors, who thrown into disarray by the surprise attack. Lord Commander Eualcides commended his own soldiers after the battle, seeing as it could have gone wrong very easily should their ruse have been discovered.

Although the approach used in this battle were less than honourable, it was deemed necessary to deliver a blow to the traitor forces and it still remembered fondly as a retributive strike against those who forfeited their honour long ago.

CHAPTER ORGANIZATION:
The structure largely resembles the standard Legion organization. However, those are mostly used for organizational purposes as the actual structure is far more fluid with specialized forced being assembled at a moment's notice to respond appropriatly to any given situation. As a result the Chapter mainly operates in task forces of varying size and composition.

FLEET ASSETS:

The Chapter puts great emphasis on maintaining a strong fleet, which size seems to be steadily increasing or at least not declining. After all, he who controls the skies, controls the battle. Most ships seem to acquired by intercepting and commandeering traitor vessels. Many of those vessels had very few Astartes on them at first and were mainly piloted by auxiliary crew.

2 Gloriana Class Battleships

15+ Battle Cruisers

9+ Destroyers

12+ Frigates

Mutiple minor space facities serving as outposts.

BELIEFS:

The Chapter aims to glorify the Emperor, beloved by all, by knowing its place, and keeping it with unstinting devotion. They know that their destiny is as defenders of Mankind. To crave more would have been overweening and imperfect. Most battle-brothers despised anyone who cast their own standards aside in the hunt for inappropriate goals. Life as an Astartes of the Emperor's Children is about purity of purpose, not superiority.

They have also expanded on the previous idea of perfection established by the 3rd Legion, although it has been taken into a different direction. True strength comes from within. This mantra has been been established after the Horus Heresy, where uncertainly was high and many were unsure of their place and was followed by honing one's spirit against corrupting influences.

Most Astartes show strong reverence for their fallen Brothers during the Great Betrayal. Those are determined to keep alive their legacy of unflinching loyalty and duty through their own actions.

RECRUITMENT:
The Chapter maintains outposts on promising worlds in addition to their homeworlds where it occasionally draws suitable recruits from. However, the majority of recruits are being chosen or recommended to full-fledged battle-brothers, who will often take an apprentice under their wing to prepare him for the long and difficult progress of being transformed into an Astartes, offering him training and guidance on worldly as well as spiritual matters. As such, recruitment does not show any notable trends, but failure rates are lower than usual due to careful selection of potential recruits.

In order to ascend to the rank of a full battle-brother, each Aspirant must prove his worth by commiting a notable deed. Such deed could be a deed or honour, valour or something equally important to the Chapter. There is no limitation of what it should be and as such Aspirants have proven their worth in many different ways on and off the battlefield.

LOCAL RITUALS:
Due to the spiritual beliefs of the Chapter, introspection is often encouraged. For that reason, cloisters and temples of varying sizes have been contructed on their homeworlds as well as incorporated into their vessels to allow a quiet haven to reflect on one's duty.

BATTLE CRY:
No strict battle cry has even been enforced, although multiple recurring patterns can be found. Most variations are centered around upholding one's duty, acting with honour or proudly proclaiming to be the true remains of the glorious 3rd Legion.

Examples:

Honour and Duty!

Glory to the 3rd Legion!

For the Emperor and Mankind!

Quick question, will there be a non-DA version of the sig banner at some point? Considering the scope of this it'd make sense for a more generic variant xD

Still working on my entry, but would like an answer to this if possible.

The Brotherhood of Angels and the E Tenebrae Lux

With the introduction of this year’s ETL, now is the time to considering taking your new chapter out to join the ranks of your other armies or add to its own ranks. It is the hope that you’ll consider entering into the ETL and paint up a single model, character, squad or army in the colors of your Brotherhood of the Angels submission. No painted models are required for submission into the BotA and the competition will end with the ending of new entrants into the ETL. Should you choose to paint up something for the ETL based on your BotA article, please edit the post and include the photo of the completed unit — whenever that may be.

Origin

One of the earliest Companies of the XVI Legion Astartes, the 21st was founded on Terra before the Great Crusade began in earnest, recruited from amongst some of the harshest of societies. Members of the company fought in the First Pacification of Luna which gave the Legion its original name, distinguishing themselves through the self-sufficient nature of its members and their efficacy at completing their objectives.

When the Legion was reunited with their Primarch early in the crusade the 21st were among those who helped bring Cthonia to compliance, inducting new recruits from several of the Cthonian gangs before the crusade moved on. The majority of these new inductees came from the large gang known as the Myrmidia, the gang's independent skill and loyal nature meshing with the Terran born Legionaries quite effectively.

Over the next two centuries the 21st Company would strike out into the galaxy independent from the rest of the Legion, returning every so often to fight at the side of the their Primarch or spend time re-equipping, training new recruits, and assisting other expeditions.

Whether this assignment was a reward or punishment few are certain, and rumours abound of friction between Vilaris and other Captains within the Legion being the cause for the 21st's dispatch to the 954th Expeditionary Fleet.

Present Activities

At present the 954th Expeditionary Fleet is working to reinforce and maintain the territories it has brought to compliance, ensuring a steady supply of recruits, supplies, and raw materials from the various worlds within the Eireann Subsector. With the severe warpstorms brought about by the traitors the 954th is unable to travel too far from their established territory for the time being.

Combat Doctrine

The 21st Company generally follow standard Legion doctrine for the Sons of Horus, a speartip of overwhelming force aimed at the head of their foe followed by cleanup efforts with their Imperial Army support. The 21st are particularly adept at what is known as the 'Hammer and Anvil' tactic, with faster elements of the army flanking the enemy while the sturdier ones approach head on.

They are also noted for their skill in three dimensional warfare, whether in Zero-G environments or underground structures.

Roll of Honour

The Pacification of Arcos Reach
The Pacification of Arcos Reach was a protracted engagement which left an indelible mark upon the 21st Company. A chain of systems where humans served as livestock for a xenos race, the Arcos Reach was one of the first places that was visited by the 954th Expeditionary fleet. Fighting alongside a detachment of the XIII Legion they cleansed the Reach of xenos taint and freed those human subjects to their rightful place as rulers of this new domain.

With assistance from their cousins of the Ultramarines, the 21st Company helped build a series of stable human-controlled systems that would one day fall under their purview, laying the foundations for future expansion.

The Ullanor Campaign
While they spent much of the Great Crusade separate from the majority of their Legion, the 21st Company and their support elements joined with the main force of the XVI Legion to fight in the pivotal Ullanor Campaign. Serving as part of their Primarch's speartip actions the 21st Company demonstrated their skill and power as a member of the XVI Legion, earning the respect of numerous other Astartes. Despite this the obvious friction between the senior officers of the 21st and several other major commanders meant that they would not remain with the rest of their brothers for longer than they needed to after the successful conclusion of the Campaign.

Defence of Arianor Prime
Arianor Prime was a planet on the fringe of the spreading Imperium which was valued for the naturally occurring crystalline structures which grew on its surface. These crystals spread in a manner similar to fungus spores and thus could be farmed indefinitely on the surface of the otherwise lifeless world. Valuable for their use in a number of vital technologies, these crystals made Arianor Prime a highly prized resource world.

Primarily automated with few workers, the Imperial presence in Arianor were caught unaware when a Space Hulk translated into realspace in the system, disgorging a fleet of Ork vessels which quickly began plundering nearby planets. The evacuation to the sturdier settlements of Arianor Prime only brought the Orks straight towards the resource laden planet.

The 954th Expeditionary Fleet answered the request for aid as the closest relief force to the problem, translating from Warp Transit as close to the planet as they could. While the fleet began engaging with its Orkoid counterpart the 21st Company began a brutal campaign on the mostly lifeless surface of the planet, intent on wiping out the xenos presence on Arianor Prime.

The Purge

It was during the Arianor Prime campaign that the senior members of the company became aware of the plans to turn against the rule of the Emperor. Showing himself to be a true son of the Warmaster, Captain Vilaris instigated a purge of his own ranks, quietly eliminating those members of the company whose loyalty to the Warmaster superseded their loyalty to the Emperor and their Captain. With a mix of direct and indirect actions the 21st were cleansed of those who would oppose them in their loyalty to the Emperor

The 21st is much like any other Sons of Horus Company, consisting primarily of infantry units supported by a number of armoured support units ranging from artillery to super heavy tanks. Of particular note amongst the company was the phasing out of standard assault squads in favour of the more versatile 'Reaver' Squads pioneered by the Elite First Company of the XVI Legion.

Other unique groups is the Janissarian Guard, modelled after the First Company's Justaerins, and the 21st Company's Triune, three elite Squadrons of Xiphon Interceptor Pilots.

With a strong command cadre the 21st was often split up into separate task forces under the various officers depending on the circumstances, which leant itself not only to a very versatile fighting force based on the types of campaigns and enemies faced. This has led to a very flexible fighting force capable of synergising not only amongst themselves but also with other force, whether Legion or Imperial Army.

As one of the forces of the XVI Legion Astartes the 21st company was outfitted primarily with MkIV Maximus Armour prior to the Heresy. Distinguishing themselves from other groups within the Legion with their deep red pauldrons, a standard Line warrior of the 21st cuts a fine figure with no doubt that these are sons of the Warmaster.

Beliefs

The 21st Company has always been a very tight knit and versatile force, who hold that they must be utterly loyal to one another and to their commanders and oaths. There is also a strong sense of belonging and right to rule amongst the Company. Coming from gangs, tribes, and clans the Astartes of the 21st hold that the territory they have conquered is theirs to rule beneath the Emperor, and, integrating themselves into the society of their territory as a ruling class much like the XIII Legion in Ultramar (though perhaps in a more straightforward manner).

Since the Heresy there have also been elements of Lectio Divinatus practices surfacing within the Company's ranks.

Recruitment

Neophytes for the 21st Company have traditionally come from three primary locations, their main source of recruits shifting as time passed. Like all Legions, originally recruits came from Terra, before shifting to the official Legion homeworld of Cthonia. While many neophytes from Cthonia were sent to the 954th Fleet the Expeditionary force's increasing distance from the Legion's home meant that new blood was needed from a closer source. For the last forty years or so the main influx of neophytes have come from the four planets of the Eireann system.

Local Rituals

Perhaps the most obvious ritual within the 21st Company is that of music and song. In training, in battle, victory, and mourning there is some form of music or song that applies to the situation. Every member of the Company is skilled in at least one instrument capable of singing.

Skull collection is a ritual shared by both the Cthonian and Eireann members of the company, however only the most worthy skulls are claimed. After a battle the brothers will gather to hear the tales of those who seek to gild the skull of a foe, and only an appropriately worthy enemy's skull may be kept. None would dare to keep a trophy that had not been witnessed and approved by sufficient brothers.

Amongst the 21st Company body modification is a commonplace method of documenting the history and attitudes of the various Astartes. Tattoos and piercings indicate participation in specific actions, levels of initiation, and a myriad of other meanings known only amongst their brotherhood.

Banners and Battle Standards

Honours, Relics, Decorations, and Rewards

Many of the honours and rewards of the 21st Company are shown through markings, whether tattooed on the flesh or painted on the armour. Amongst these many honours the Bloodstripe and Red Hand are perhaps the most respected. The Bloodstripe is a red marking across the crest of the helm and indicates an Astartes who has survived circumstances which should have killed them, or succeeded in the face of impossible odds. The Red Hand is only permitted to be worn by those who have slain an enemy commander in single combat.

An unofficial honour amongst those who wield plasma weaponry is the use of a bronzed brow on the helm for those brothers who have survived the venting of their weapon.

Amongst the 21st the only relics worth noticing to them are those of war, weapons and armour of heroes or warriors from the past are particularly notable. To this end many members have a weapon or two which holds significance, to themself if to nobody else.

Battle Cry

The XXI Company has two main unique Battle Cries, though there are numerous spur of the moment ones which may be used over the course of several battles. It also made use of the XVI's 'Lupercal' prior to the Heresy, replaced with the common 'For the Emperor' after Horus' betrayal.

'None escapes the Falcon's Reach!' - A reference to the brutal campaign in the Arcos Reach, usually shortened to 'Falcon's Reach' in the midst of combat.

'Clear the Way!' - This battle cry came in with the influx of new recruits from the Eireann System which quickly gained popularity amongst the older Astartes. Often shouted prior to a charge.

Gene-seed

Origin: XVI Legion Astartes
Status: Stable

Champions of the Expedition

Captain Izrayle Vilaris
"A galaxy of foes before him and he chooses to war against our Lord? Foolish. I suppose I really am his son, for now I too will make war against my Father."

A Cthonian of the powerful Myrmidia organisation, Izrayle Vilaris was inducted into the XVI Legion in the early years of the Great Crusade. Developing into one of the 'Sons of Horus' Vilaris' resemblance to his gene-sire went beyond the physical, his skill at arms and tactical acumen pushing him up from simple trooper to leading the 21st Company as a Captain of the Legion in the span of three decades. An independent individual, Vilaris was eventually given command of his own Expeditionary Fleet (though rumours abound that this was a form of exile after he crossed the wrong officer) which he lead off into the galaxy. When he learned of Horus' betrayal Vilaris once more echoed his Primarch's attitudes, refusing to abandon the Emperor or the Imperium. He would lead his company against the traitors throughout the Heresy.

Dietrich Shultz, Primus Medicae
"Each Astartes is a representation of highly valuable resources, the hours gone into selecting, training and modifying every single one of us alone is astronomical, let alone the value of the implants, wargear, and resources used to deploy us. We are given the finest personal armour humanity has ever known, able to defend against all but the most powerful weapons. How dare you waste all that time, all those resources, by being so stupid as to enter the field of battle without your damned helmet on! It doesn't matter how good your armour is if you don't put the throne-cursed thing on you absolute simpleton"

Terran-born Dietrich Shultz has been with the 21st Company for as long as it has existed, and served as its Primus Medicae for almost as long. A man with little tolerance for fooling around, Shultz is usually at the heart of battle making sure his younger battle brothers are able to survive whatever wounds he can save them from. Younger generations of the company mock his constantly repeated admonishment of 'Keep your bucket on', but none dare be caught by him in combat without their helms firmly attached.

Ciaran Flynn, Equerry
"All of life is a battlefield, and we are the greatest warriors in the Galaxy. Politics is perhaps the hardest battle I have ever faced, but I always win."

One of the youngest Astartes in the 21st Company's officer cadre, Flynn's position of Equerry to the Captain bears all the hallmarks of political manoeuvring. By serving in this role Flynn not only demonstrates that the Eireann recruits are given the same level of respect as those from Terra and Cthonia, but he serves as a link between the older officers and the newer culture that has been integrating into the Company, allowing a more successful integration. With astute attention to details and a politician's instincts Flynn is invaluable to his Captain.

Navir Surin, The Ashen Falcon
"Come now, who is next? Come you would-be champions and test your blades against the talons of the Falcon!"

Navir Surin is without a doubt the greatest swordsman of the 21st Company, but he is more than simply a champion to his brothers. Surin is the living avatar of the Company, wielding twin swords that have been used by the chosen champion since their founding. Known as the Ashen Falcon, the Champion of the 21st Company inspires those around him to fight harder as he seeks out enemy leaders and champions to duel to the death. Flitting from foe to foe Surin demonstrates the XVI Legion ethos of cutting the head from the serpent with near surgical precision.

Eran Akkad, Captain's Herald
"I am the harbinger of my Lord's will, and through me his message of peace or war are sent. Sometimes that message requires explosions. I like those ones the most."

The title of Herald commonly indicates an individual who carries a banner within the Legiones Astartes, but amongst the 21st Company the title has a different meaning. While Akkad does occasionally carry the Company Banner into battle it is not his primary function. In the parlance of the Myrmidia of Cthonia a Herald is one who announces the coming of the warriors through damage and sabotage. An expert infiltrator and saboteur Akkad is usually one of the first of the 21st to hit the ground, ensuring that the Company have every advantage possible.

Selim Dal, Captain of the Janissarian Guard
"In service there is glory, in obedience there is honour, and in warfare there are no rules"

Born in the region of Anatolia on Terra, Dal entered the training halls of the XVI Legion at the same time as Captain Vilaris and the two struck up an enduring friendship. Having served in several positions of the Company's command structure for numerous decades he eventually took up the role of the head of Vilaris' bodyguard group. Undergoing instruction from no less than First Captain Ezekyle Abbadon and Captain Falkus Kibre in the methods of the Elite Justaerin terminators, Dal founded the Janissarian Guard that would serve as the Company's Honour Guard from then onwards.

Ancient Azraphon
By your deeds shall you be known. By your heart shall you be seen. And by this device all shall know you for who you are

Once Captain of the 21st Company, Ancient Azraphon serves as advisor and honour bearer for the company. It is Azraphon who ultimately determines what awards and honours that a member of the company is entitled to, and it is he who recounts the tales of the greatest members of the Company for those who wish to hear them.

Sergeant Iskander Jubek
"Glory lies beyond the horizon, speak of conquest and demonstrate it!"

Iskander Jubek is known throughout the 21st Company for two reasons. The first is his unyielding resolve in battle and inspirational demeanour. Jubek is infamous for ensuring his squad will hold the line no matter what, pushing forward when others would have fallen back, and snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. The second is the fact he is capable of wielding his Phobos-pattern boltgun with a single hand. A giant of a man even among Astartes, Jubek stands as tall as a Terminator in his custom made battle plate.

The Black Horde

GENE-SEED: Unknown (Suspected various sources)

▪ CHAPTER MASTER: Lord Venator (Suspected)

▪ FLAGSHIP: Metuere

▪ MAIN COLOURS: Black or Unpainted

▪ SPECIALITY: OPTIONAL – Hit and Run, Ambush and Multi Layered Assaults

▪ BATTLE CRY: Clamarent ad te venit diabolus

▪ CURRENT STRENGTH: Suspected 200 Astartes, Unknown number of Auxiliaries

▪ ALLEGIANCE: Unknown (Suspected loyalty to the Emperor)

ORIGIN OF THE CHAPTER:

The origins of the Black Horde are debated due to the contradictory accounts, many believe that the core of the Black Horde the Timorem as originally a Night Lord garrison that had been out of contact with the Imperium for nearly 5 years by the start of the Rebellion, or whether it was a small number of Imperial Fists yet to return to Terra.

When early reports came in of the Horde it was of sporadic encounters on the Northern reaches of the Imperium. Small scale raids with few casualties but their attacks getting bigger more complex in scale with each encounter. By the time traitor and loyalist forces had fully come to realize who they were the Horde had grown in such a scale that many worlds could not stand in its wake.

PRESENT ACTIVITIES:

The Black Horde current is known to be fighting a protracted conflict on Laius Rift in the Crucis Sector against traitor forces. Their objective is unknown but many suspect they are fighting for a weapon of great power capable of moving planets.

COMBAT DOCTRINE:

The Black Horde uses a variety of tactics from overwhelming force to hit and run attacks. The Timorem is known to act in a more attrition based environment and have been seen to shake off wounds that would kill typical legionnaires. Their use of auxiliaries to fill out roles that the Timorem do not have the capabilities to fill themselves such as heavy armoured conflicts and aerial conflicts. The most recent tactic seen used has been scorched earth with the use of deadly chemical weapons to force opponents to retreat.

ROLL OF HONOR:

-The Conscience Raid (007.M31)

The first recorded of the Black Horde takes place on the outpost of Conscience in which a rapid attack not only cripple the bases defences but raided the armouries, relay station and destroying the science labs containing many rare and unstable formulas related to gene seed growth. This attack put the traitor forces in the edges of the imperium at a disadvantage as they could not refresh recruits as fast.

-The First Battle of Harakan (008.M31)

The Black Horde descended on this planet in a devastating firestorm destroying both loyalist and traitor forces alike. This attack led to the collapse of both sides and both forces fled, the Horde expanded further by absorbing many of the left over forces of both sides and gained access to much needed supplies. The consequence of their actions though damned the planet as later loyalist forces found it burnt and empty of all life.

-The siege of Laius Rift (011.M31)

The Black Horde has descended on this planet in full force destroying any resistance and taking the fortress on the world, just before they were able to leave though they were faced with a rear-guard attack from vengeful traitor forces of the XIV legion with either side unable to gain an advantage.

ORGANIZATION:

The Horde is based in a loose formation of forces all answering to various war leaders all centring around the space marine host. This system of oaths, ties and alliances between the forces of the horde though create a very delicate balance to the force that it seems would collapse if heavy damaged. This loose bond though helps to keep the horse decentralised with it impossible to remove all of the leaders.

The Timorem itself is highly organised with all forces acting is a single unit acting with the efficiency of a typical chapter of a legion. The only difference though is that their armour is completely black only with battle damages and strange red marks on the left shoulder pad other than that no tactical marks can be distinguished so making it difficult for enemies to pinpoint areas to target.

FLEET ASSETS:

The fleet of the Black Horde is made up of various different types of ship from warships to civilian carriers. The Timorem is based off 3 ships though.

-Metuere: Apocalypse Class Battleship (Believed to have been stolen)

-Confusio: Strike Cruiser

-Solvite: Strike Cruiser

BELIEFS:

The Black Horde has shown very little in the form of a belief but they have been seen to exhibit their morality through the fact they do not repair any damage to the outside of their armour repairing it only to the point of functionality. Secondly they have been to place kill markers on their left shoulder pads when they have faced a worthy opponent.

RECRUITMENT:

The Black Horde recruit by pressganging any person captured or found on worlds that they raid or are forces that simply join them. The Timorem has not been seen to recruit or expand their numbers making many guess that the legionaries are a death mission.

LOCAL RITUALS:

The Black Horde while a mobile fleet has seen to exhibit several rituals being that of showing their own mortality and celebrating individuals that survive certain death. They are known to host fighting pits on several vessels for men to prove themselves before battle and make sure that the strongest men are those leading. It is not unknown for the Timorem to partake in these events and fraternize with the human elements of the horde.

HONORS, RELICS, DECORATIONS AND AWARDS:

While the Black Horde has shown very little in the form of awards or decorations they do hold one relic. A golden baton that is said to be all that remains from before the turned from their chapter and had shown to have driven members of the Timorem to acts seen by some as unnatural or beyond the call of duty.

GENE-SEED:

UNKNOWN

BATTLE CRY:

Clamarent ad te venit diabolus - The meaning is unknown but many think the cry is directed at Horus for his betrayal.

CHAMPIONS OF THE CHAPTER:

UNKNOWN (Many supposed champions of the Horde are maybe only seen once in the battle and many doubt that “Lord Venator” is truly the leader of the horde just a member that is used as the leader while another guides the Black Horde as a whole.)

All done just in time msn-wink.gif
