GENE-LINE METHODOLOGY

The gene-line listing is based on tracing lineage back to the founding Legion/Primarch. Where a Chapter is descended from a Successor, that Successor's name will be in brackets.

Entries for the traitor Legions may be either warbands/splinters, or they may represent actual Chapters (perhaps the Chapter was created from traitor gene-seed as part of the Cursed Founding or the Chapter is a DIY representing loyalist remnants or some other explanation exists).

Breakdown into Confirmed and Unconfirmed is based on game-universe material, not player speculation. For example, the Blood Ravens are officially described as having unknown gene-seed, though Games Workshop (and Black Library and Relic Entertainment) have provided a number of tantalizing clues that hint at the Chapter potentially being descended from loyalist Thousand Sons Space Marines following the Horus Heresy. The official material makes them "unknown" (and therefore not listed as belonging to any Legion) while player speculation might put them on the Thousand Sons list. This methodology is intended to avoid including any (Chaos) Space Marine organization as belonging to multiple Legions (except where gene-seed has been spliced, as may have happened in the Cursed Founding).

Entries in the "Unconfirmed" sub-lists are based on game-universe speculation, not player speculation. These will include Chapters that are rumored, claimed, possible, suspected, or otherwise unconfirmed. Note that common sense assumptions are not part of the criteria as these are still assumptions. So where the Sons of Guilliman would appear to be easy to assign to the Ultramarines Legion as Successors, Games Workshop has never officially told us that this is the case. It would be surprising to find out that some Successor of Rogal Dorn chose to name itself after some other Primarch, but while this is deep in the realm of unlikely, it's not within the realm of the impossible.

THE BLOOD ANGELS LEGION

Though they have never been so prolific as the Ultramarines or Imperial Fists, the Blood Angels are not without their Successor Chapters. Most were founded in the days following the Horus Heresy, before the grim truth concerning their flawed gene-seed came to light. These Chapters are strongly bound to the Blood Angels, united by blood and tradition in a way difficult for outsiders to understand. To attack one is to invite the wrath of all, for whatever differences and rivalries might exist between these Chapters, they are all the Scions of Sanguinius, whose loyalty to the Primarch's memory transcends all other duties and concerns.

Born as they were from the Blood Angels' gene-seed, every Successor Chapter carries the Flaw, although some feel its taint more than others. Most harshly affected are those successors founded in later centuries, at times when the Blood Angels Chapter Council had thought the Flaw eradicated from the gene-stocks. In reality, it had merely degenerated into new and worrying forms and, as a result, the Battle Brothers of those Chapters founded in such times do not suffer slight lapses of control, but teeter on the border of full-blown insanity.

THE DARK ANGELS LEGION


When the Space Marine Legions were split into Chapters after the Horus Heresy, it is written in the few surviving histories that the Dark Angels Legion sired at least three new Chapters. These are the Angels of Absolution, the Angels of Vengeance and the Angels of Redemption, but more of these so-called 'Successors' are said to exist. Certainly, more were created than are recorded, and all of these Chapters are extant to this day. These Chapters collectively call themselves the Unforgiven and they pursue their own shadowy agenda, forever seeking to absolve themselves of the Dark Angels' ancient sin.

Each of the Unforgiven Chapters follows the Dark Angels' pattern of organisation closely, and each has its own Inner Circle. They all have formations which are similar to the Deathwing and Ravenwing Companies, although they are not named as such. Some of these Chapters use special uniforms and markings for these units, while others do not.

The Chapters of the Unforgiven coordinate their actions in regards to their secret mission and it is not unknown for the Supreme Grand Masters of the Chapters to hold summit meetings on the Rock.

Like so many of the First Founding Space Marine Chapters, the flaws of Corax have been handed down encoded within the gene-seed which was used to create the Raven Guard. The Raven Guard's zygotes are far from stable. Irreparable damage to the gene-seed, probably caused by the Chapter's use of accelerated gene-harvesting techniques millennia ago, has resulted in the deterioration of several organs. The Chapter no longer has the Mucranoid and Betcher's Gland and mutation of the melanchromic-organ causes teh skin to become very pale. Ivory skin and dark black hair and eyes are still the distinctive traits of all Raven Guard Space Marines.

Despite these known flaws, there have been subsequent foundings of new Chapters created from the Raven Guard's original gene-seed. These Chapters are scattered across the Imperium, but all revere Corax as their primarch.

Today the Chapter and its successors abide by the Codex Astartes, which details the organisation and tactical doctrines of the Space Marine, written after the great schism of the Horus Heresy had set Space Marine Legion against Space Marine Legion in a civil war that almost destroyed the new Imperium.

The Salamanders have never been great in number and were the smallest of the First Founding Legions. Perhaps it is for this reason that there seem to have been no Second Founding successor Chapters formed from the Salamanders, whilst the other Legions were broken down into several smaller fighting forces. It is a matter of debate whether there have been Successor Chapters during subsequent Foundings, although it appears likely and many scholars point to similarities in the physique, markings and tactical dogma of Chapters such as the Storm Giants and Black Dragons.

With subsequent foundings, the Adeptus Terra have always favored the Ultramarines' gene-seed and created new Codex Chapters from their line. With the passage of time, some of these Chapters have subsequently strayed from the strict letter of the Codex, introducing new variations but remaining broadly faithful to the principles laid down by Roboute Guilliman many thousands of years before.

It is believed that there are approximately a thousand Chapters in existence today, scattered throughout the galaxy. Of these more than half are descended from the Ultramarines, either directly or through one of the Primogenitor Chapters of the Second Founding.
