Thought of the Day: “Death Shall Hold Dominion and Silence Fall; Consider.”

War. If there is a single defining truth of the dark and terrible age in which we live, it is war, red and bloody.

The ceaseless battle between Mankind and the alien, between the divine truth of the God-Emperor and the falsehoods of Chaos, between brother and brother, between light and dark, life and death – war is all. This treatise concerns but one war among many, but a war whose nature and secrets render it quite exceptional. It was a conflict that rose up to plunge a score of star systems into savage strife. A war which turned entire armies of the Imperium’s most powerful warriors against each other and in doing so swept millions to their deaths in its turbulence. I write of course of one of the most insidious and dangerous internecine conflicts to wrack our beloved Imperium in many centuries: the Badab War.

- Inquisitor-Ordinate Talon Encarmidus, Ordo Hereticus, 5137933.M41

[imperial Armour IX: The Badab War - Part 1]

=][=

INTENT

Welcome, brothers and sisters, Loyalists and Separatists, to another edition of “Back to Badab”: a thread that will serve as a loose framework to enable fellow Badab War enthusiasts to gather and share pictures and stories of their Badab War projects, and provide each other with ideas and feedback, while generally have a good time in dangerously close proximity to the dreaded Maelstrom.

Since most of us are hobby butterflies, the main focus of this thread will be creating “kill teams” set in the Badab War conflict as these are far cheaper and easier to make than a full army, and can be used on the tabletop with the official Kill Team rules or a number of unofficial fan-made rule sets. However, after an excellent suggestion by @AHorriblePerson, I also strongly encourage people to create models for the various Badab War characters that were never granted anything more than a passing mention or, at best, a datasheet in one of the two Imperial Armour: Badab War books such as Elam Courbray, Anton Narvaez, and Tarnus Vale on the Loyalist side and Corien Sumatris, Thulsa Kane, and Ahazra Redth on the Secessionist side.

GUIDELINES

Please note that while the Badab War was an Adeptus Astartes conflict first and foremost, many other factions contributed to the conflict so if you would like to come up with a Kill Team representing one of those underrepresented factions (for example: the human, mutant, and xenos raiders and pirates that plagued the shipping lanes of the Maelstrom Zone, the human elements of the Tyrant’s Legion, the heretek scavengers that Huron used to recover a buried weapons store on Cygnax, the Mechanicus of Angstrom, or even the dreaded forces of the Ordo Hereticus and Inquisitor-Ordinate Talon Encarmidus himself) you are free and very much encouraged to do so.

Also note that I strongly encourage you all to post some accompanying lore/story when you post pictures of your models. We are not looking for award-winning writing but adding a bit of flavour to your pictures will enhance the experience for all involved and really cement the idea that your models are part of the tragic Badab War.

Finally, Primaris Marines as such have no place here as the Badab War is set in the first two decades of 900.M41, long before the events of the Gathering Storm, the Cicatrix Maledictum, and the Indomitus Crusade. That said using Primaris Marine models for true/art-scale conversions is, naturally, authorised.

VOWS OF FEALTY

For those of you who would like to “officialise” your commitment to this project you may copy and paste the text below, filling in the blanks while you’re at it to reflect your project, and post it for all to see your fealty to the cause of the Loyalists or the Secessionists. This is non-complusory and only here to help motivate people to get their project done by providing them with a deadline mechanism.

I, <insert forum name>, do swear to complete a Kill Team consisting of <insert amount and description of models> who are committed to the <Loyalist/Secessionist> cause. The deadline for this will be <insert date in the year 2020> and I shall do the utmost best to not fail my brothers- and sisters-in-arms.

MARKS OF AFFILIATION

You’re encouraged to include the appropriate "faction" banner in your signature to show your participation and affilitation, though please keep in mind the forum rules regulating the use of signature space.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A special thanks to @The Yak for the original incarnation of this concept that was created and run back in 2015. You can find it here.

And, of course, none of this would be possible without the lore genius that was Alan Bligh and his fantastic team at Forge World. Emperor bless their souls.

Ave Imperator!

Interesting! I might build and paint a few Sons of Medusa then, as I'm in the planning stage for a Valyund Cal model for another badab-related community challenge.

On that note, may I suggest the inclusion of renditions of the many characters in the Badab War into the log? Guys like Elam Courbray, Anton Narvaez and Tarnus Vale don't have any models and could present an opportunity for some great conversions!

Ooh, what a cool idea – and it happens to coincide with a Badab Kill Team campaign that my gaming group is hoping to start this year. While I've got my Astral Claws Kill Team ready to go, I hope it's accepttable to join in here for some reinforcements?

+++ Kill Team Clawthorn +++

+ Brother Ahmos Soter +

ax.jpg
Surly, uncommunicative and curmudgeonly, Soter was equally feared and loathed by the humans under his command during his time in the Tyrant's Legion. A vindictive streak sealed his reputation for cruelty – but it also made him amongst the most effective heavy weapon operatives in the Chapter, doggedly pursuing his foes to the limits of endurance. Prior to his death at the hands of what proved to be an equally stubborn and hard-to-kill Son of Medusa, he had made seven confirmed Astartes kills.

+ Brother Yoruban +
as.jpg
Sharp-eyed and incisive, Yoruban was a popular member of the squad, particularly noted for his wit – and his aim. Fully trained as the squad's support member, his skills were put to use as sharpshooter when Soter – who Yoruban joked needed the practise more – was assigned to the squad.

+ Brother Baraqu +
aw.jpg
The oldest member of Clawthorn by nearly two decades, Baraqu was ruthless and deadly. His hard-won experience and cold demeanour made him a deadly foe. Known to have survived to the bitter end of the Badab War, he was not counted amongst the dead at the Palace of Thorns. His body may have been lost or utterly destroyed, but it is possible that he lives on in exile with the Tyrant himself.

+ Brother Nmamde Kain +
av.jpg
Excelling in every aspect of fieldcraft and warfare, Kain seemed destined for greatness. Welcoming the Tyrant of Badab's ambition and vision, he threw himself whole-heartedly behind his master with the fervency of the fanatic. Deadly, but not cruel; and fierce, but not dishonourable, Kain was an exemplar of the Astral Claws – and an bitter example of the double loss the Imperium faced when they drove the Secessionists to rebel.

+ Brother-sergeant Todros Aldin +
au.jpg
Aldin had been promoted mere months prior to the start of hostilities, and was freshly returned from a stint in the Tyrant's Legion when he was given squad command. Distant, arrogant and aloof, Aldin drew together his squad based purely on observed ability. His lack of interest in his warrior's personalities led to a team that was as fractious and argumentative as it was capable. He was isolated and overwhelmed in combat by a Kill Team of Novamarines during the Xet Offensive.

+ Brother Lyron Acast +
at.jpg
Both pragmatic and cautious, Acest maintained a healthy scepticism of the Tyrant's creation of the Legion; though not to the extent to speak up against it. Loyal to his beloved Chapter above all, Acast maintained the crest of the Astral Claws rather than the Tyrant's own sigil. This was a common indulgence, well-accepted within the Chapter; though such half-heartedness proved no defence in the face of Imperial retribution. His analytical and sceptical mindset proved useful in keeping him and his comrades alive – but not forever. Acast's charred remains were discovered in the wake of the Star Phantoms' first assault on Gonda.

Ah man, I’ve been toying with rebuilding some of my Star Phantoms from way back when and this doesn’t help me haha. I sold a lot of projects off to focus on my Chaos but with this being Kill Team it cant be that distracting? Right? I mean it’s only a few models.....and a tank, they’ll need a tank......and bikes.......

Yeah, I'm in for the Fire Hawks, my favourite chapter right behind the Dark Angels. I'll start with an Elam Courbray (I have done a Primaris version of him, but any excuse to do a True Scale version is welcome).

I, Grotsmasha, do swear to complete a Kill Team consisting of at least 5 Models who are committed to the Loyalist cause. The deadline for this will be December 31st, 2020, and I shall do the utmost best to not fail my brothers- and sisters-in-arms.

I, Biohazard, do swear to complete a Kill Team consisting of 8 Star Phantoms who are committed to the Loyalist cause. I can’t set a deadline realistically just yet but I have a few models who are almost ready to go, they have been butchered for parts over the last few years but it won’t take me long to get them battle ready. :tu:

Hm. Didn't expect to see my name of all names there among the sources of inspiration. I suppose I'll have to get something together for this, then. Perhaps in a couple weeks' time*...

*of course, the last time I said I'd do a hobby thing in a couple weeks, it took me two years to knuckle down and get it done.

Ok so after perusing through Noctis and Apologists threads I’ve decided to go the true scale (Primaris) route as well.

I will be revisiting the Macharian Veterans I posted earlier at some point once I figure out how to emulate Mk6 armour using the Primaris bodies. For now though here’s a very early start, names and fluff to follow. The painted guy was the test model for my Star Phantoms back in the day, I only really painted him, 5 Scouts and a Chaplain before I was sidetracked with something else.

One thing I would like some feedback on, I’ve used the standard bolters on these guys, I think they look ok, I was worried they’d look a little puny. Any thoughts on that?

I’m most definitely going to include Capt Zrukal Androcles as well further down the line. :tu:

You know what? I'll join in with this.

I, Gederas, do swear to complete a Kill Team consisting of members of the Salamanders 2nd Company, lead by Captain Pellas Mir'san who are committed to the Loyalist cause.

No exact date for me, as I'll be working on them throughout the year when I get ideas for them (and I need to get stuff to finish my Night Lords for Facing the Unknown ). An elite squad of veteran battle brothers lead by Pellas Mir'san. I'll be making them True-scale using Primaris Marines, and Adrax Agatone for Pellas Mir'san.

Not at all. If anything the Boltguns fix the main issues with weapons scale on Primaris. These guys are super clean conversions and look great.

So I woke up to new AdMech madness and this ! Good times !

The Badab War is still my favorite non / not-yet spiky corner of 40k. And Kill-Team, I can probably manage. My Mantis Warriors didn't make the timeframe for the Shadow War event, so that be may be the time for redemption. I ' ll dive into my books and bitzes.

So, mark me down for the Secessionist. It's Mantis Warriors first.

And maybe this is the perfect opportunity to come up with some AdMech / Knight households allied to the Maelstrom Wardens together .

Been looking for an excuse to pick my Mantis Warriors back up again. Haven't got into killteam much, but just moved and with dramatically less hobby space maybe now is the time!

I, Naryn, do swear to complete a Kill Team consisting of at least 5 Models who are committed to the Secessionist cause. The deadline for this will be December 31st, 2020, and I shall do the utmost best to not fail my brothers- and sisters-in-arms.

Looking forward to working with you all!

I, Dr. Ruminahui, do swear to complete a Kill Team consisting of assorted cultist and heretic astartes models such as to make a 100 point pirate killteam (heretic astartes rules) who are committed to the Secessionist cause. The deadline for this will be prior to this year's ETL and I shall do the utmost best to not fail my brothers- and sisters-in-arms.

Loving the models already posted in this thread, and how many people are participating!

Biohazard, it's a shame you're shelving the first models you posted, I thought they were really well posed! Though the Primaris models have a lot of character as well. Excited to see paint on them!

Apologist, I love that kill team! Baraqu is my favorite, his pose is so classic and that bolter gives him a lot of character.

Xin Ceithan, can't wait to see how you do your Mantis Warriors! I feel like my mental image of the chapter has kind of diverged from official info on them, so I'm looking forward to comparing our approaches.

Did FW ever provide any recipes on how they painted the Badab Chapters like they did with the Legions? Having an 'official' guide for the Emerald Green of the Sons would be a huge help later on - if not, I'll come up with something else.

Unfortunately not. The Badab War never got the same kind of publicity as the Horus Heresy so other than a few FW staff who painted a Badab War army, there wasn't the same kind of enthusiasm. The emerald green of the Sons of Medusa is a little tough to nail but Moot Green seems like it could be a good starting point. In any case, please share the results of your experimentation as I'm sure there are others (myself included) who'd love to know how to paint the Sons' emerald green. :)

So this project has me more excited than I realised. I can’t stop. I picked up another box of the easy build Intercessors yesterday and put together another 2 members of Squad Apion, I still have the 3rd to build but the back of his torso flew off the sprue and is lost in the warp anomaly that is the hobby cave somewhere for now haha.

Squad Apion

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n235/Stovie_2006/Biohazards%20Imperials/6994E411-91B1-4800-B3F1-8FB22E1FFD14.jpg

I had a look back into my archives and found a discussion with 1000Heathens (who now goes by the name Hyaenidae, a fact I only learned when I looked back my PMs :D) back in 2013, he had an awesome Astral Claws project as well as an incredible Marines Malevolent army. Both these armies have crossed paths with the Star Phantoms either during the Macharian Heresy or obviously Badab so I had been trying to mirror some of the fluff he had made about his Claws, basically showing engagements from the Phantoms point of view. It’s irrelevant now but it has given me a decent start point to work from with my own fluff.

Here’s a look at the squad so far. Still a lot of cleanup to go.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n235/Stovie_2006/Biohazards%20Imperials/A20C6D12-5FAE-4FD4-BB80-DE019E914CD0.jpg

I messed about with trying to file the legs down to mimic mk6 armour on this guy and I’m actually pretty happy with the result. It needs a bit more work but I think it should look ok.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n235/Stovie_2006/Biohazards%20Imperials/4306156E-2E53-4F24-844B-33D7F45956EE.jpg

I also made a sort of proof of concept build for Zhrukal Androcles, Capt of the 9th Devastator company. I wanted his armour to look beefier so used the Aggressor to try and mimic the heavier armoured look the current Devastator kits come with. His chest was just a quick attempt to try a mk7 look. Again a lot of clean up needed but any c&c welcome.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n235/Stovie_2006/Biohazards%20Imperials/B9407A49-AF01-45B1-9364-BB7AEE6F7C27.jpg

I also want to add that Im building these with no intention of ever using them in a game at this point in time.So they may not be strictly game legal. This is more a rule of cool project for me. :tu:

Marshal Rohr, thank you, I wasn’t sure to begin with but I’m really liking how they look now. :tu:

Naryn, thanks, once I get a little more used to working with the Primaris models I fully intend to resurrect that squad in true scale form. I’ve only messed about with the easy build models so far but I will be buying a box of the multi part models further down the line. I have plans for an updated Chaplain as well.
